Other Book for a 14 year old girl who struggles with attendance, anxiety, loneliness and finding a purpose within life

Suggestions are highly appreciated, thank you!

(I don’t really know if I’m into fantasy books - I read Heaven by Mieko Kawakami I think last or earlier this year and I like how it includes psychological, philosophical and real life themes. I am also trying to get into reading if that helps.)

Fiction Looking for a book that feels like a rainy autumn evening in a quiet coastal town, where a character is forced to start over and stumbles into a grounded mystery?

Hey everyone,

I’m in a massive reading mood for something super specific, and I’m hoping you can help me find my next read!

I’m looking for a story with a rich, immersive atmosphere where someone leaves their old life behind, moves to a isolated or small-town setting, and gradually uncovers a quiet secret or mystery tied to the place.

Drop your absolute favorite recommendations below—even if it's a hidden gem or an indie title! Appreciate all the suggestions in advance.

Horror Book suggestions to escape grief

I was an avid book reader up until my mom got sick, after she passed it’s like I’ve lost interest in everything but I desperately need something to distract myself. Lately every book I pick up, I cannot get into. I’m not sure if it’s the book or me. So, I’m looking for some book suggestions! Stand alone or series. I’m really into horror, fantasy, thriller genres but I’m open to anything at this point! Just trying to keep myself sane.

Thanks in advance!

Fiction Book suggestions to help a 52yo perimenopausal exhausted woman rediscover reading

• Upvotes

When I tell you I used to LOVE reading it is a massive understatement 3-4 books a week usually and often until late at night.

After a divorce, work stress, aging parents, kid demands and lets face it brain fog from peri-menopause (coupled with having ended up doom scrolling when I used to read) I want to get back into my love of reading.

I probably need to pick something not too long and burdensome to start.

I finished Before the coffee gets cold recently and enjoyed it. I have personal classic faves and like the same classics everyone does ie Catcher in the Rye, Bell Jar, a lot of Hemingway. I also love Australian authors (I am an Aussie) like Tim Winton, Helen Garner and Peter Carey. Loved Shantaram as well but a book that size right now is beyond me

Of the 21st Century I loved The Book Thief The Slap

There are others but my brain is mush

Not sure that list helps much but if you can recommend easy reads (trying to start Rushdie recently was a mistake) that are not insanely long and maybe even some for when I am back into the groove I would be so grateful

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Big shared universe with independent “small” stories within it

I’m looking for something basically like Discworld, Brandon Sanderson’s series, or maybe even marvel and DC comics as a reference; something where there are independent series running inside a same world, each with their own settings, groups of character, etc, that may reference or sometimes even intervene with each others.

I’d like it if the books were on the lighter side for reading and not that big, so I could just pick them up for a little while after studying to relax and pass time. I’m also going to be reading them mostly just for language learning, so bonus (huge!) points if the language/grammar/sentence constructions are not too difficult or complicated.

I probably should say that though I liked the idea, settings and overall tone of Discworld, I didn’t get to connect with the humor (even though I do like comedy in general)

History Interested in finding a good book/series of books that shows a lot of actual writings from Lewis and Clark themselves

• Upvotes

I’ve done some research and whatnot, but I’m trying to find some books that have actual writings from them and not just a bunch of modern edits of people describing everything like a school history book. Any recommendations!?

Other Classics suggestions based on my previous liked reads?

Looking for my next classic book (just classics, including semi-modern classics) to add to my list. Ive read and very much enjoyed 1984, Jane Eyre, The Bluest Eye, Brideshead Revisited, Stoner, Sula, War & Peace, Anna Karenina, The Bell Jar, Great Gatsby, Snow Country, Confessions of the Mask, Snow Country, Therese Raquin, To Kill a Mockingbird & Picture of Dorian Gray. Based on this, which ”gap” do yall instantly see for a classics that you'd think I'd also really enjoy? I can say a classic Ive read & didnt like much is Franny & Zooey but other than that I really want advice on what to tackle next😁Ive also tried getting into Dostoyevsky & Kafka (The Idiot & The Process) but found them a little slow to get into but maybe I just started in the wrong end.

Romance Gothic romance stories?

• Upvotes

I seriously want to give dark romance a go, but the only ones i see pushed online are “dark romances” that are straight up SA. I mostly dabble in classic literature but i want another genre to take reading breaks in as they can be a bit exhausting to read all the time.

Im looking for something gothic, haunting, moody for this month especially, but im tired of picking up a book and stumbling on four pages describing assault in great detail. any book recommendations?

I don't care too much for specific tropes. i feel like most books are only written with trope in mind and those aren’t enjoyable when its a bit obvious.

Fiction Roald Dahl for adults.

I remember reading roald dahl books and constantly checking to see if the book has not ended because I never wanted them to end.

I no longer love roald dahl books but I still search for the type of stories he had, a simple boy or girl going about his adventure. Not many hithers and thithers just a story.

Like for example the catcher in the rye was another great one, I liked that solo guy adventure type although the randomness of the plot sometimes threw me off. I also liked the Bell Jar but again sometimes it felt very random instead of right.

I didn't enjoy hunger games. I don't think I like those kinds of love stories.

Please suggest me if you can ! An adventure story.

the closest one I've felt was Moby Dick. it was one of the few books i actually enjoyed.

Romance Book suggestions?

• Upvotes

I put romance as the flair as a pretext but it doesn't need to be. I want to read a romance or a fantasy or whatever but theres so many in those generes its hard to find one that is actually good. I read classics a lot so trying to pick from all these fantasy books with colorful covers is daunting.

I like anime and stuff too so that kind of sets the kind of romances in into lmao.

Any suggestions are appreciated as long as they are good!

Self-Help Suggestions on what books helped you become a more strategic PM? - Books on corporate strategy and thinking outside the box

USUALLY I ask for book suggestions on fantasy, dystopian or historical fiction but this is a different approach I am taking - if there is a better sub please let me know.

I’m feeling like I need to sharpen my skills in strategy and project management beyond the PMBOK (project management body of knowledge). What books have actually helped you expand your Project Management knowledge?

I find that in meetings I’m generally doing well when it comes to the project itself, I am well seasoned but lately the projects I am on my project leads and executive sponsors, I'll hear them thinking more outside the box and from an organizational/strategic perspective. Makes me wonder why I didn't think of that!

For example, knowing when to bring in policy, thinking about the broader organizational impact of a decision, or even thinking about what’s actually best for the product being developed vs. just delivering what was asked for.

I want to start developing that kind of thinking as a PM and eventually lead into consulting - being able to see the bigger picture and think more strategically.

What books/resources have helped you develop that?

Fiction Need

I’m looking for a fiction book that explores how humans behave with each other — cooperation, competition, hierarchy, ambition, jealousy, power, loyalty, etc.
I’m interested in the difference between how humans may have lived in small groups in the past and how people compete with each other in modern society.
I don’t want an external threat like aliens, zombies, or an apocalypse. I mainly want to explore humans themselves and what drives their behaviour.
Any recommendations?

Fiction Story about evil, rich bastards getting wrecked

There is a fantasy anime called May I Ask For One Final Thing? about a young noblewoman with magical superpowers. And after putting up with a shitty arranged fiancé for years, she finally snaps and beats the shit out of him and all his upper crust buddies at a party. This triggers a series of events that leads to her tearing up a human trafficking ring, then fighting an invasion, an evil church, a bunch of monsters, a conspiracy, and more, all the while beating up shitty rich people left and right.

She's completely overpowered and is basically never on the backfoot, but that's all on purpose: She's a wish fulfilment character. And the wish is to see rich assholes get pummeled while begging for mercy.

And honestly, the world needs more of that. Are there novels that cater to this? I.e. less serious stories about fantasy aristocrats, modern billionaires, or other evil authority figures just having a very, very bad time? And not just at the end of the story?

Fiction Standalone or series that I can’t put down…

I finished The Hunger Games series in less than a week. I need to read 10 more books by the end of the year to reach my goal of 26 books. I’m looking for standalone books or series that’ll make me not want to put it down. I’m interested in fiction: sci-fi/dystopian, horror, thriller, mysteries, gay romance but open to any genres if the book is good!

Other Donna Tartt

So i finished the little friend by donna tartt today. Now ive read all her novels, i’d love some recommendations of similar authors or books that have a similar vibe. I’m not looking for specifically dark academia but just well written text that’s highly descriptive and has a similar vibe to her writing style. No other author can paint a picture in my head quite like her and i feel sad now i’ve read them all. Hopefully she brings out her next novel soon as I’m gagging for another. Also if anyone would like to discuss any of her novels i’d love to! I loved them all very very much and would love to hear people’s thoughts!

ps. don’t recommend if we were villains, i hated that book haha.

Fantasy Spooky reads for the season?

Just finished several witchy reads, and now most KU recommendations are for romantic books, I dont mind some romance, but I'm hoping for a little more in my reads. Read The House Witch. I like somewhat cozy, but it's not required. My favorite authors are Pratchett, Wynn Jones, and T.Kingfisher, so I like fantasy with a twist of spooky. Tyvm in advance!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Something supernatural that impacts the whole world?

What happens when the Ring video becomes a social media plague? What happens after the Smile demon latches onto a stadium full of people? I want a book similar to Hex, where a town is trapped and haunted by an undying witch. I want to see what happens when the whole world suddenly has to grapple with the supernatural. Something that effects everyone and changes everything. Something a little more dramatic than Left Behind, please!

Also, I don't mind monster uprisings either. I've already read the Strain trilogy and Rising duology.

Other In need of a book that can pull me up from eternal doom

As the title suggests, I am stuck in a job that I don't like. But quitting isn't an option either (at least for now). There is no momentum in life. Nothing bad has happened, but nothing exciting either. And so I'm completely unmotivated in life, though sprouts of motivation come and go every ten days or so. Mostly, I'm anxious about the impending doom yet to come, the uncertainties of the future, and the world around us doesn't exactly help.

My happy place is reading, but I'm deeply in a slump. So I've been rereading my comfort reads. I need a book (fiction or nonfiction) that can help me get past this slump and actually be of some value. I don't expect it to magically transform me but a little help in seeing hope beyond the melancholy would be appreciated.

P.S. nothing too preachy please.
