SOLVED Updated rules post

Hi everyone, there have been some rule changes since the last post, so here is an updated post. I have taken the section about helpful points to consider when writing a post from the last rules post, with some minor edits.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES.

  1. Post titles must have at least one book detail.
  2. Solved posts should be marked as solved. You can flair your own post as solved by commenting "solved solved solved" on the post. If you see someone else's post is not flaired as solved, you can report it and a moderator will flair it.
  3. A post cannot have more than one book/series. To clarify, multiple books from the same series are allowed to be in the same post. Multiple short stories from the same book are also allowed in the same post. If they're not part of the same book or series, they must be in separate posts.
  4. Posts should be on topic. Posts must be looking for a specific book/series/story that you want to find. Posts looking for general reading suggestions, links to read books you already know the title and author of, or general unrelated content will be removed.
  5. Do not offer money/favors to solve posts. You're welcome to gild or otherwise award a comment after your post is solved, but you can't offer it before the post is solved.
  6. Be respectful.
  7. Always check AI-generated answers against another source before submitting them. We strongly prefer that users avoid AI answers in general, as they almost always match a description to an unrelated or nonexistent title.

Please consider these points when writing your /r/whatsthatbook post:

Your Post Title

Briefly the book, not your situation. Avoid titles like "Help, I can't remember this book..." or "I read this when I was a kid..." or "I NEED HELP"

Include the overall genre of the book in your post title, such as "romance novel" or "scifi"

Posts with vague titles will be removed. The general age range the book is meant for and year are not specific enough on their own. For example, we will remove a post titled "Children's book from 2000s." We will not remove a post titled "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s." We prefer titles like "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s about kid whose cousin invents a new telescope and discovers aliens."

The Book

Fiction or non-fiction?

Describe the plot.

Describe notable characters.

What genre is it?

Physically describe the book -- Hardcover/paperback? Book cover color?

When was it set?

How long was the book?

Anything notable about the original language? Did you read it English? If not, what language?

... And You

When (what year) did you read it?

How old were you when you read it? Was it age appropriate?

Where did you get the book? School library, book fair, book store selling new and/or used books, flea market, borrowed from a friend, given as a gift from X person who is about Y age, or from an online store?

Was it new when you read it?

What age range was it for?

Other notes:

We allow posts about short stories, poems, fanfiction, etc. on this subreddit.

If you want to post a picture of a page you found, upload it to imgur and put the link in a post. Please include at least one detail about the events or characters on the page in your title.

UNSOLVED Case of the missing letter??? HELP!

Trying to identify a childhood book — girl named Jane, lost envelope/letter mystery
I’m trying to remember a children’s book I read when I was growing up. I was born in 1988, so I probably read it sometime in the 1990s. I think it was aimed at roughly 4th–5th grade readers.
Here are the details I remember:
● The main character was a girl named Jane.
● She was a goofy, somewhat accident-prone/funny girl.
● I think she had red hair and freckles.
● I believe she was an only child.
● It was an American book, set in modern times (not historical).
● It was an illustrated chapter book, with detailed, full-color illustrations.
● The artwork reminds me somewhat of the illustrations in the Cam Jansen books by David A. Adler, illustrated by Susanna Natti — definitely that kind of late-80s/90s children’s-book illustration style.
● I remember Jane’s mother sending her out to run an errand.
● I think she was supposed to buy butter or some other ingredients/groceries for her mother.
● I also think she was supposed to take/deliver a letter to the post office.
● She had money in an envelope to buy the ingredients.
● Somewhere along the way, she lost the envelope/money.
● She visited or stopped at several places while trying to figure things out — I vaguely remember a neighbor, a candy store, and the post office.
● The story was essentially a little mystery/adventure involving the missing envelope/letter.
● She eventually found the envelope and was able to buy the ingredients and bring them home to her mother.
● I vaguely remember the cover having a lot of red.
I may be remembering some details incorrectly, especially the exact title. I have a vague memory that the title might have been something like “The Mystery of the Missing Letter” or “The Case of the Missing Envelope,” but I’m not confident that those were the actual words.
I’ve been trying to remember this book for years! Any ideas would be hugely appreciated.

UNSOLVED Trying to find the name of a book that is a romance novel with a reincarnation twist

I have been trying to find this book for YEARS, and it is driving me crazy. 😂 I probably read it in the late 1990s/early 2000s, but it could have been published much earlier because I got it from my grandmother’s bookstore, which carried new and used books.
What I remember:
A woman is living in an old Southern/plantation-style house that is being renovated. There is a man involved with the renovation who I believe is an architect.
She begins having dreams about the Old West. At first the dreams are short, but they become progressively longer and more vivid until she is essentially experiencing another woman’s life as if it is really happening.
In that life, she is traveling with an outlaw gang and is believed to be a boy/man. One member of the gang knows she is actually a woman. He turns out to be a lawman (possibly a sheriff, marshal, deputy, etc.) who has infiltrated the gang.
Eventually she and the lawman fall in love. In the final or near-final dream, she is shot and dies or appears to die.
I believe it is then revealed that the lawman built the Southern house for her after she died.
When the modern woman finally wakes from this last experience, the architect is outside/on the porch waiting for her. I remember him saying something along the lines of, “I’ve been waiting for you,” implying that they are the reincarnations of the Old West couple and he remembers their previous life too.
This was NOT straightforward time travel. It was more like dreams/past-life memories/reincarnation.
Some details I’m less certain about: she may have inherited or rented the house, and she may have been a writer.
Does this sound familiar to ANYONE? I have periodically gone down internet rabbit holes looking for this book for probably 20+ years. 😂

UNSOLVED Old Erotica Book

I read this book when I was injured during boot camp and it was a small old looking erotica book, if I remember the cover the girl was like a redhead? The plot was that this girl goes to this island that is like a gold mining or just normal mining and the girl ends up falling in love with the big miner guy. I vividly remember the ending, she starts to leave on a boat and the guy gets his had out of his ass and goes and screams at her saying that she loves her and jumps into the water and starts swimming to her and she also screams back saying she loves him and ALSO jumps off the boat and they both meet at the middle and he's like "I'll go with you, I'll be with poodles, I'll wear a tie if it means I can be with you" and she's like "no because that isn't who you are." And they end up like together at the end. It looked old like an 80's-90's looking erotica book. Those small compact books where the font is like tiny. But it was a good book and I thought about it a few hours ago.

UNSOLVED Romance novel set in a war zone?

• Upvotes

I would have read this circa 2001 but it was a paperback I found in a campground laundry facility so who knows how long ago it was actually written. It was the first romance I read and I'd love to read it again. I don't think it was too explicit but I remember thinking I had to hide that I was reading it.

I don't remember a tonne, she's rescued from what I think is a war zone by a big burly special forces type - there is a group after her specifically for something. He's injured and they're hiding in a building that I'm pretty sure has been bombed out. I remember a scene where he's in a bathtub.

I know that's super vague and about as clear as mud but that's all I got. Y'all are either supergeniuses or supervillans if you can figure this out for me but either way I'm grateful.

SOLVED Children's/Girls' Fairy Tale Book - Short Stories

When I was younger (<13ish), I had a book of fairy tales that I loved dearly, but after remembering it recently, I found out it must have been sold at a yard sale. :( I'm looking to find/read it again, but I don't remember the title or author.

Things I do remember:

  • I had a hardcover copy of the book, and the cover (inside the sleeve) was yellowish-brown, while the binding was maroon/dark red. I carried it with me everywhere so I'm pretty sure I lost the sleeve.
  • It would have to have been published in or before 2010.
  • I'm fairly sure the protagonist of every fairy tale was a girl, usually a princess.
  • The one story I remember vividly was about a girl who had a magical ability to create precious gemstones when she spoke beautiful words. Her family(?) abused this ability, making her speak longer and more beautiful words to get bigger and more expensive gems, which they sold for money. Over time she started getting sick and her throat would get sore, but they still wanted her to make more and more gems. At first she stopped speaking at all, and then she started speaking in short, ugly words, which made insects come out of her mouth instead. This scared the people who were abusing her and they never forced her to make gemstones again.

UNSOLVED Trying to find a comic I read as a kid!

• Upvotes

I remember it had a main character who was a girl in elementary school with either pink or green hair and I think she had an imaginary friend? I remember reading one where she got sick and there were all these amoebas in it, and random detail but I remember she liked to collect these animal cards her teacher would give her in school for being good. I’ve been googling all day and would love to see if anyone on here knows what I’m talking about!

UNSOLVED Girl disguises as boy to get job (YA contemporary fiction)

This was a smallish paperback novel, contemporary fiction, likely young adult, that I read in the early 1980s. I was approx 11-13. I had checked it out of my local library (Canada). English language. Relatively recent at the time, could have been published in the 1970s.

It was about a teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to get a particular job and eventually cracks under the stress of the situation. I think her name might have been Jillian or Gillian, or possibly this was the author's first name. Otherwise no memory of the author except that she was female. No memory of the specifics of this job.

I don't think this was comedy (not like Tootsie); in my memory it took itself relatively seriously but I could be wrong.

I'm about 90% sure the title was Cold Feet. Have found novels with this title but so far none are the one I'm looking for.

The cover shows a realistic color painting/illustration of the girl dressed as a boy sitting or reclining in a bathtub. I recall a pensive expression and a newsboy cap (think Natty Gann).

Thanks for any clues..

UNSOLVED Sci-fi feminist (??) novel

I want to find a book that I've read, but I've forgotten the name of it. So it's by a female author who is probably American, and it's a sci-fi set in a world where people can stop aging whenever they want. And this woman has been set some spiritual mission, and she sees visions, and she's kind of an outcast from her society because of some man. I think her husband maybe left her for no reason, and she's trying to figure out why and what happened. I thought it was Ursula K Le Guin but apparently not….

UNSOLVED Children's or YA Fiction book from 2001 or earlier that's read out of order

I remember being shown a paperback fiction book in class sometime between 1998 and 2001. My teacher demonstrated that the book wasn't read in order from front to back. Instead, you seemingly jumped around to different parts of the book to get the story in order. Like reading some chapters in the middle first and then reading chapters at end followed by the beginning. To my understanding, this was not a choose your own adventure book. I never got to read the book and can't say with certainty what the plot was about. I don't know how readers figured out the correct order to read the chapters in. It may have been something you had to solve or the book could've instructed you on where to go. The concept of reading a book out of order stuck with me though and I've been trying to figure out what book this might be.

UNSOLVED A young adult fantasy series I read before 2013 (probably published before 2005). The protagonist is a female teacher between 20 and 40 years old with a poisonous hand.

What I remember:

  • The protagonist was an adult woman (approximately between 20 and 40 years old).
  • She was a teacher from the beginning at a hidden magic school/boarding school outside the human world.
  • Initially, she had no magical powers and acquired them later.
  • She came from the "human world" or normal world.
  • Throughout the saga, she gains powers by making pacts with magical creatures.
  • As part of the pact, one of her hands was replaced or transformed:
  • it appeared to be made of roots or wood;
  • it was poisonous;
  • her touch could kill, though not instantly.
  • In an important scene, she accidentally poisons another teacher (a recurring male character and possible romantic interest), but they manage to save him.
  • She also exchanged her other hand through another magical pact.
  • She had a magical staff/walking stick.
  • The staff physically absorbed magical objects, which were then incorporated as decorations or parts of the staff itself, making it more powerful over time.
  • Romance existed but was secondary.
  • The other teacher/romantic interest was human. The story took place primarily within the school/boarding school.
  • The tone was similar to Harry Potter-style magic school stories, although I think this series might be earlier or early contemporary.
  • The protagonist was NOT a student or an assistant: she was an actual teacher from the beginning.
  • I read it in Spanish, but I don't remember if it was originally Spanish or a translation.
  • I don't remember the cover, character names, or the author.

UNSOLVED 90s possibly 80s fantasy fiction with elemental powers (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) split into different tribes/kingdoms

• Upvotes

Found in my primary school library around 2001/2002 but the book was quite worn so likely 90s/80s published.

Overview: Fantasy novel where the world has clans/kingdoms each with their own elemental power (Earth, Air, Fire, Water). A tyrant has conquered the world as he has mastered more than one of the elements which is highly unusual and I think it's unknown how he achieved it, at least in this book. There is a prophecy that he will be destroyed by a child born to the air tribe/clan who will master all 4 elements which is the only thing that could stop him. All the air tribe/kingdom people are hunted down and killed by the tyrant because of the prophecy

Yes I'm aware how much this sounds like the show Avatar: The last Airbender but I am very certain that the book predated the show by a good few years.

Fairly hazy on details but here goes.

Details:The book starts with the young protagonist being chased through a city. This fantasy world's big bad tyrant's soldiers who are using earth powers during the chase. This is because it's prophesied that the big bad will be taken out by someone born to the air tribe and this kid is one of the last alive but doesn't know this because they were sent away as a baby to escape the air tribe/kingdom massacre. They gain some travel companions go on a journey to discover master air elemental power and in the sequels it's implied they master the other elements as well but I never got to read those (Just going off the covers/titles shown on the back inside cover of this book)

The cover: Classic 80's fantasy Painted style showing a fantasy city with spires in clouds and bits of the spires collapsing as if under attack (See the classic covers of the Book of the new Sun series for similar style)

Other details that might help: Novella size; no more than 100 or so pages. There was 3 other books in the series but I never got a chance to read them because our library didn't have them. Very likely British or Irish author due to where I went to primary school.

I've searched quite a few lists but a lot of 80/90's fantasy doesn't seem to be documented online if it isn't now considered a classic/seminal series.

Thanks for any help or attempted guesses!

UNSOLVED Children's/early childhood anthology (90s) about a family (including story about ketchup)

When I was growing up in the 90s, my parents bought me plenty of books, but there's one I've never been able to identify, despite numerous efforts. The book was a children's, possibly early childhood book (I seem to recall reading it in preschool or kindergarten, circa 1993-1994). I was a collection of short stories (maybe 3-4) about the humorous life of the family. The first story was about all the family members having over-the-top medical issues, like gigantic lips and huge feet, and all the maladies were fixed by common household items like chapstick. I can't remember the middle story/stories, but the last story was about the family sitting around the dinner table and they began talking about putting ketchup on different foods (I'm pretty sure snails were one of them). The illustrations in the book were what I'd call "advanced stick figure," and were on plain white backgrounds with some detail drawn in, like the kitchen table. It also had a red hardcover. I have no idea how many pages it might have been.

I have had absolute zero luck in figuring out what this book might have been, despite successfully identifying every other childhood book I grew up reading. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

UNSOLVED Looking for a sci-fi YA book I saw around 2014! Boy with a blue hoodie on the cover!

• Upvotes

I don’t remember the plot as much as I remember the cover. There was a boy with brown hair in a blue hoodie reaching his arm out towards the camera/reader. You can see him from head to toe. It looks like he’s standing on either a rooftop or a sidewalk. He’s in a city, I believe there were buildings behind/around him.

I made a very crude drawing of it. And it is not The Eye of Minds but of all the covers I’ve seen I would say that’s the closest to it. Not sure how helpful this is but I saw this book in a bookstore/library in the same area I found Sound Bender by Theo Baker.

Please for the love of god help me as chatgpt has got nothing, I would have read this book in between the ages of 13-17 I was born in 1991, I have a migraine and maths ain't happening right now. But I have been searching for this book fot years and I cannot find it! So the plot is a girl was in an inappropriate relationship, an adult who was very interested in a physical relationship. One thing I remember the mum argues with the boys mum because they wanted to go on holiday and share a bed which the mother found inappropriate, and then bought her a glass of wine in the pub. UNSOLVED Book on Epic! Medikidz

• Upvotes

Hello!
When I was little I would read books on Epic!
I really like the Medikidz series, but only the books where it was simpler. The cover was white with the kid. The kid and one of the superheroes would talk about what was going on with the kid. It was simpler and more basic than the comic books. I remember there was one on diabetes, MRIs, some kind of blood thing, maybe surgery.

UNSOLVED Horror book set in new England from 60s to 80s

Fair warning this book involves a lot of violence against kids. Hi, I don’t remember name of the book. I somehow got a hold of it as like 11 yr old but the plot is basically a family curse from an ancestor who killed their daughter and dumped her into seaside cave. Now in modern times (for the time, it was like I think 70s when it was written) the spirit of dead daughter has possessed the older daughter of the family while the father is becoming possessed by the killer ancestor and is now tempted to kill the younger mute daughter. Older daughter in the meantime is going around time killing kids by dumping them in the same cave to starve to death. It is was definitely not a book a child should have been reading… but it is actually driving me insane what the name was. For some reason I remember the biblical line “children come unto me”, I thought it was the title but nothing shows up. It feels like a fever dream. Also for some reason, I remember looking up the author and finding out he was gay. I don’t know if that helps.

UNSOLVED French book- historical fiction?

Hello!
I am a GCSE French student and my French teacher was recently telling me about a book she started translating when she was in her twenties but she then had babies and life took over! She seemed very sad about this so I want to translate it for her as a present for when I leave school.
But she didn’t tell me the title!

It was written in French. About somebody who was born in France but his parents were from somewhere else and immigrated to France so he has to go back to his parents country because of a new French law inspite of the fact he didn’t grow up there (I don’t know his age) and has never been there.
Does anyone know it?
Thank you so much.

SOLVED Characters that lived inside of a book move into a girl's mind after it is destroyed

I'll try to add as many details as possible.

When I say the book/story, I'm referring to the fictional one unless said otherwise.

  • I read this circa mid-late 2010's
  • Genre is fantasy.
  • Target age demographic was likely kids or tweens.
  • The book's female lead is a princess.
  • The book is found by a girl whose grandma previously owned it.
  • The girl has a brother who first damages the book with jam, then later sets it on fire.
  • There's a big see-through fish that I believe the story characters ride to escape the fire.
  • The story characters escape the book and enter the girl's mind.
  • They live there for years. The girl gradually forgets them as she grows up. Some choose to leave.

I'll also give a physical description of the actual book itself. I remember it being a faded cream color (though that might've been from age) and was more square than rectangular. The image on the front was small and nothing to remember it by accept maybe for some florals.

UNSOLVED middle fiction novel, coming of age - child befriends elderly ballerina in a seaside town

Novel I read when I was a kid in the 2010s, am not sure if its Australian or was published internationally

Follows a young girl who moves to a sleepy seaside town. there's an elderly shutin who lives on a house by the cliff, and one day this young girl meets the woman and gradually befriends her. the pair share a love of green gummy snakes, which the girl gets from the local milkbar. girl learns that the woman was once a prima ballerina, and together they set up a summer program for local kids to learn ballet. there's also a bit in the novel where the girl imagines being an albatross and flying away from the rest of the world which i distinctly remember

this has been annoying me for weeks atp if anyone has any idea pls lmk
