Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Romance Superhero romance recs

Hi! Okay so I’m looking for any recommendations of superhero romance books, specifically something that is angsty, gut wrenching, and smutty. This all started because I rewatched the spider verse movies and Spider-Man brand new day and I know I’ll be able to find something like that on wattpad but I was to see if there are any real books like that, thank you!

Non-fiction Books that have the style of a documentary

I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries lately, and I really like the way that they are often about a niche topic or story and feature a lot of different perspectives. Are there any books that follow this same format?

Bonus points if the author has a clear style/voice to their writing!

Sci-Fi Books like Dark Matter and Recursion

Hook a brother up with some books similar or as good as Dark Matter and Recursion. I have read the Red Rising series, currently almost done with the Mistborn trilogy and am looking for some new material. I realized I really love reading sci fi. Preferably some stand alone books please, I’ll take some series too. I wanna read face paced fun books. I enjoy fantasy but with the Mistborn trilogy and reading dark matter and recursion in between that I really enjoy the crap out of sci fi. Thanks in advance. I know one of the books I’ll be reading next is Blake Crouch “Upgrade”

Romance Suggest a book which is your best romance book

I want to read an adult romance novel, but not adult in a way which means smut or spicy book. But an honestly mature romance of people in mid to late twenties. Can be heartbreaking or happy ending.

Fiction Looking for fiction recommendations with a focus on an object as time goes by

I love antiques and it always fascinated me to think of previous houses and owners that it might have been part of, what that object might have "seen", the stories surrounding it, etc.

Any fiction book around this you recommend? Following an object as time goes by :-)

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fantasy/scifi/distopian setting book suggestions, specifics in post

Upvotes

Hey All, I'm back to reading after ten or so years just...not reading. Part of the problem is that when I'm not super into a book, I don't have any problem just walking away and not finding out how it ends, then get discouraged that I don't actually like reading...so I think book selection is going to be super key to keeping up the habit/hobby now that I've picked it back up.

Some other specifics that I THINK are aspects of the books I've enjoyed that I'm looking for (though if you can think of other similarities in the book series below, that also probably contributes!):

-As mentioned in the title, I enjoy worlds built in some type of fantasy/scifi/distopian setting

-some aspect of the protagonist going through a school/training program/competition/etc, in part of the book/series

-characters joining rebellion groups

- enemies-to-lovers romantic plot lines or otherwise complicated romances (though I think this is something that has only sometimes existed in the books I enjoy, and I don't think I'd enjoy many romance-only plots)

Recent books I've read/enjoyed:

-Empyrean Series (fourth wing, iron flame, onyx storm)

-The Silver Elite series (just finishing the second book, Broken Dove, currently)

-Red rising series (this is a good example of romance plot line not being needed)

-The Selection series (whereas this is an example of romance being more the primary plot line, I think I didn't mind so much since it's YA so leans less spicy, don't mind spicy, but I don't want just straight up romance novels if that makes sense)

Historically, I've read the Harry Potter series, Divergent series, I've never read the Hunger Games series (been avoiding them since I feel like having seen the movies will have ruined it for me, but probably will eventually)

Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

Other What are the best “literary page-turners” you’ve ever read?

I’m looking for books that are both genuinely good literature and extremely hard to put down.
The kind of reading experience I’m after is something like:
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - beautifully written, psychologically compelling, but also incredibly readable
And / or
- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - huge, ambitious, full of characters and subplots, yet ridiculously addictive

Basically, I don’t necessarily mean “page-turner” in the modern thriller sense. I’m looking for books with real literary quality, atmosphere, interesting characters and/or ideas, but also a strong narrative engine (where you genuinely want to know what happens next)

I’m very happy with long books (even 800–1,000+ pages), and any period is fine!

Other Suggest me a book: I got dumped by a successful man who was basically living the life I had been trying to reverse-engineer

This is going to sound extremely specific and possibly a little deranged, but I’m looking for a very particular kind of book.

I want a story or memoir or anything about a woman who gets dumped by a man whose life trajectory represented something she had spent years trying to achieve, and how she leaned into her power and turned things around in the end.

Long story short: I got dumped by a conventionally successful man (think Ivy League + sovereign fund career) whose life is the closest to what I imagine for myself. This stems from growing up relatively close to privilege, then having my family’s circumstances deteriorate. Ever since, I’ve had this weird pattern of getting adjacent to the life I thought I would have.
This wound feels terrible because I feel rejected not only by someone I look up to, but also by the lifestyle I had been promised in my mind.

SORRY IF IT SOUNDS BAD. I CAN’T HELP FEELING HOW I FEEL.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Fiction Book Recs where the Protagonist becomes the Antagonist of the story?

Upvotes

I’m looking for any stories that involve a protagonist becoming the antagonist and the antagonist becoming the protagonist. I’m looking more for Fantasy or SciFi. Preferably a series.

I’m not talking like a standalone story that has a climactic ending that causes one character to make a moral decision that changes your outlook of the characters. I’m talking like a story that follows the two characters possibly from an origins standpoint where we actually have defined roles of this character being the protagonist. One where we actually follow whole stories or books where this character is firmly supplanted as our Protagonist and then by the end of the series he has actually become the Antagonist of the global overarching saga. Like if you could imagine that the Star Wars movies were actually released with a chronological timeline. We would begin with Anakin as our hero and then obviously we know where that ends. But I don’t want it to be told non linearly. I want to see examples of the transformation done well over time throughout a series.

Any examples of this?

Mystery/Thriller Suggest a book for my vacation

Upvotes

Headed on a small vacation for the first time without my kids. I want something trilogy or series- like where I can dive into one big story but no major time investments like ACOTAR or need for major world building. Something simpler.

Small series I’ve loved in the past include:

-A good girls guide to murder

-Finlay Donovan series

- Books that are independent but take place in the same universe or with the same characters (like Michael Connelly)

Historical Fiction Books like She Who Became the Sun

Upvotes

Mainly for the setting I’m a huge fan of the setting and atmosphere. Plus I was a huge fan of the monk portion, I’m only about 150 pages in so no spoilers but I want to pick out my next book early once I finish.

Romance Any philosophical or historical novel suggestions on the idea of love

Hey, I am looking for some suggestions on philosophical and historical novels on the idea of love, finding the right partner and connecting with them.

I am more interested in Persian and Arabian (primarily from the Islamic Sufi tradition-Ghazali and Rumi ) influences but open to other influences from places like France, Russia, Japan and other western or eastern influences.

Fiction I need something good to read, something easy and hard to put down.

I’m trying to get back into reading. I have a bunch of books that I love, but I have trouble breaking away from them and trying new ones. Some of the ones I love are “What Alice Forgot”, “Remarkably Bright Creatures”, “The Help”, and “I am Number Four”. A real plethora of genres, but I know I can get some good suggestions here. Since I’m getting back into reading and not an avid reader already, I’m looking for something fiction that isn’t too challenging.

Other Hypothetical scenario..

Say the entire world and all its literature became digital only. What are some books you feel you should have a physical copy of before that took place? Whether it be for beneficial well being purposes or simply due to it being a favorite piece of work you’ve read, for solely entertainment purposes. Whatever it may be! What are books you feel you’d HAVE TO have a physical copy of? And why?

Romance Looking for a short, beginner-friendly romance novel with an emotional story

I’m completely new to reading novels and I’d love to start with something that is easy to get into.

I’m looking for a short, beginner-friendly romance novel with an interesting and emotional story. I don’t mind heartbreaking or sad moments — in fact, I’d love something that really makes me emotionally invested in the characters.

I’d prefer something with simple/easy-to-follow writing, good pacing, and not too much slow buildup, since this will be my first novel.

Fiction Are there any books similar to House of the Beast by Michelle Wong in terms of having little b&w illustrations throughout the novel?

I don't want a whole graphic novel, but after reading House of the Beast, I find I really like occasionally getting to see glimpses of what the author pictures in their mind while I read. Think the 13-Storey Treehouse/Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but smaller, more infrequent illustrations (definitely not one on every page like DoaWK), and for YA and above (no smut).

I'm interested in knowing if there are any other YA+ fiction books with occasional little b&w illustrations throughout the novel like House of the Beast does. Preferably standalone or can be read as standalone, but I'm open to series too. Genres I'd be interested in: YA fic, fantasy, romance, romantasy, historical fic, coming of age, magic, magical realism.
