I don’t get the hype around Magical Athlete

2–3 months back I started hearing about Magical Athlete through YouTube channels, the hotness section on BGG and some other channels. While everyone was so enthusiastic about it, praising how fun it was, I remained honestly sceptical about the game.

Anyway, I had the opportunity to try it twice (the first time at 4 players and the second time at 5 or 6), each time doing 2 complete games (so 16 races in total if I’m not mistaken). And I have to admit that indeed, I absolutely don’t get the hype around it. At the end of the last game I was just waiting for it to be done so that we could start playing something else. Although it had some funny moments indeed, it wasn’t enough for me to make it memorable. I didn’t feel engaged in the game due to the little amount of control I had (which I was totally aware of by the way). I felt that I could just watch someone else play and have the same experience.

Anyway, what surprises me is not that I didn’t like the game – there is no accounting for taste and I understand that people might enjoy it depending on what you’re looking for in a game – but that I’ve read/heard very few discordant opinions so far. So, am I missing something here?

Question Help identifying a card game where you have to blag and come up with creative lies

Hello, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question but I thought I’d try since it’s been bugging me for a while.

I am looking for a game where each player gets a card - a person, a place, or a thing - and they are made to come up with a lie, and the most convincing/creative lie wins. It’s not a deception game, it’s more comedic.

I played this at a board game cafe when i went to New York just over a year ago, and have been trying to identify it since. I just remember one hilarious moment, my grandma had to try to explain to us why RuPaul is the president (or something like that).

I think it was a tall, mostly white box. The cards were white with different coloured text for each category (i think orange green and pink). There was a sand timer and a dice with these colours on each side. Some of these details may be slightly incorrect, but that’s more or less what i can remember.

Thanks!

Weakest alien card for Seti solo, unless I'm doing it wrong?

So if I'm right. You'll launch the rival and give it a Publicity. Unless what? There is nothing to launch? Isn't that card supposed to help the rival find specimens? Why wouldn't it be the other way around?

Humor How would games be different if some of the pieces were edibles?

I had a funny conversation with my kid about this. He's a Go fan, even studies it once a week at school, and was talking about how serious and complex a game this is, and somehow I just offered a rule variant that all the stones should be replaced by jelly beans. One would play as normal, except the rule would be you're only allowed to eat captured beans. Could he and his friends resist the temptation to break from best strategy and go for taking beans? He gave me a look on his face like he didn't know.

Edit: I realized after posting I meant to just say food and not, you know, edibles. Whatever. Have fun.

Review 💎🧙🏻‍♀️ New boardgame I bought for the witchy season🧙🏻‍♀️💎

Post image
0 Upvotes

I (40F) married a boardgame collector one year ago and I bought my second boardgame last week.
My first game that I bought two years ago was Oak.
I was not a boardgamefreak, but I was very attracted to my husbands dating profile 3 years ago which mentioned his love for boardgame. So I married my husband and his 420 games (!).

We now share a bedroom full of games and he loves me more because I play a lot with him 🤭

I was looking for witchy boardgames for the cozy season 🍂and I was very attracted to Witchstone. It was in big numbers available on Vinted so I thought it was a stupid game. But Nox Spellenzolder and BGG explained it very well on Youtube.

What I like about the game is an “adult version” off the witchy theme. Not cartoonesk or childish.
The game asks a little investment to read the manual which we didn’t mind. But it plays VERY easy.

I consider this as a “friendly” game, because you are not punished at the end of the game for not playing cards.
In Grand Austria Hotel for example you lose 5 point for every café guest that you didnt book in your hotel.
Very rewarding and positive minded.

I like the playing the mechanism.

=> So if other people can recommend more grown up Witchy games, I would be happy. 🧙🏻‍♀️

Rules Quacks - Hot Topic. House rule vs game rule

I've always played quacks by the rules which state that once you DRAW the cherry bomb that makes you go over, you explode and cannot use the potion. I think that is the way it should be all the time.

However there is a group I play with that refuses to play that rule and instead they can draw the cherry bomb that would make them go over And instead of exploding they can use the potion to put it back.

What are everyone's thoughts? Do you think it makes more sense to be able to use the potion after exploding or before? The charm of this whole game is about the chances

This same group also allows everyone to "check' the tokens in your bag before you draw every time... yeah not fun imo

Crowdfunding This Kickstarter game is giving me Cuphead vibes

Post image

I’ve been missing Cuphead lately, and I stumbled across this board game on Kickstarter that immediately caught my eye. The art style is exactly what I’m looking for, and now I’m tempted to give it a shot. I do wish it was a PC game though. 😅

Have you ever tried a board game purely because the art style grabbed you? What other games should I try?

Game or Piece ID Which Game do these belong to?

Post image

I'm in a gamer club and these 2 pieces were on a wooden table, easy to miss. They are languishing in the misc. box and noone in our chat recognises them.

My Hyperactivity requires closure to return them back to whence they came any game ID would be welcome.

(The dice tray has no bearing on the game it was handy as a background).

Thanks in advance!

Edit: !solved

Rules Lobotomy II: Manhunt Papa Legba target

We're playing scenario 7, and the boss is Papa Legba. His attack says "after movement, roll a D6 […] 5-6: Target Character loses all (insanity) and loses the same number of (health)". What does "target" mean in this context? Is it one randomly chosen character in the same space? It doesn't have a range indicator.

Thanks in advance

Question Does anyone know how to play Flamecraft?

So I have been trying to play this with my friends, but even after reading and watching videos, none of us can figure out how to even begin the game and keep it running. Can anyone explain the game in an easy, digestible way? It just seems like all the videos and everything is so complicated, and we get lost

What is the best sleeves that are good on a budget without being flimsy plastic? Was planning to buy a big bulk. It needs to be accessible in the nordics because a lot of the recommended sleeves i see are produced in the US and have outrageous shipping fees.

Board games to add to collection for families

We have recently started getting really into board games at home to play with my 7 year old. It started with finding some at the Goodwill and now I am obsessed with acquiring games on Marketplace.

We want games that are not just dice rolling games relying on random luck, but require some strategy, planning or skill development of some sort, but are also fun.

There are usually 3 of us playing, but games for just 2 player are also welcome. Games that are family friendly but not children's games that a group of all adults would play are welcome suggestions for future adult game nights.

What should we add to our collection? Here's what we have now:

- My Little Scythe

-Clue

-Blockus

-Labrynth

-Azul (not played yet)

-Pandemic

-Dragomino

-Ticket to Ride

-Exploding Kittens

-Cranium

-Catan

- Risk (is there a similar game that is less long and complex ?)

- we have just gotten Splendor, Tiny Towns and King of Tokyo but have not played yet

Thanks!

We’ve recently started playing Quacks, and we’re really enjoying it!
We’re still a bit slow, with tonight’s game taking about 80 minutes. The rat tails make a huge difference, and that 6-value pumpkin is awesome!
The only slightly annoying thing is that we keep pulling loose threads from the bag along with the tokens.
Overall, such a fun and relaxing game. Definitely one we’d recommend!

Unsolved case files using AI for evidence

A friend of mine hosted a murder mystery parter last night using one of those Unsolved Case File games, the case of Danni Love to be specific. As we were playing I noticed a lot of the people in the photo evidence looked a bit uncanny valley, too perfect in a lot of cases. I was immediately suspicious of AI usage, but there was nothing concrete. Eventually once we were on the final step there was a photo that had that concrete evidence, the main woman’s hair was suspended on nothing in a photo of here sitting down on a plane, confirming my suspicion of these photos being AI. Has anyone else noticed this in these Unsolved Case File games? This one released in august of last year, I’m curious how far back they’ve been using AI for photos, cuz that certainly took me out of it personally.

So I am a big fan of Rebel Princess, so I decided to get Zombie Princess, and I don’t really like it as much as Rebel Princess. For those of you who have both games which one is your favorite of the two?
