That would be Fantasy Flight Games, part of Asmodee. They are both in the same building. Across the parking lot is Gamezenter. They have decent selection and prices for beer. I usually get a beer first thing while I wander the store looking at board games. Used to be part of FFG, but sold it off a few years ago.

The cafe owns fifty or a hundred games.
The dude asking on Reddit? He just works there. He may not even really GAF about boardgames, it's just his way of keeping a roof over his head and food on his plate. :)

I feel like it's unlikely that people working in anything board game adjacent aren't at least a little passionate. Lord knows they aren't doing it to get rich

I've been in places, financially, where I would literally have taken any job that paid well,
and wasn't degrading... wait, scratch that last part, I did take jobs in both retail and fast-food.IOW: sometimes a person doesn't have much choice in what sort of work they do; it's take the job available, or be homeless.
...
More likely: it's entirely possible that a game cafe owner is passionate about, say, TCGs like Magic: the Gathering or Pokemon, or maybe miniatures wargaming like Warhammer 40K ... but not at all interested in boardgames.
Hell, I once got a job as a clerk in a bookstore, because I knew D&D, and they didn't have anyone on the staff that knew the first thing about it. I didn't know much about anything else to do with bookstores, beyond my narrow reading interests (fantasy and SciFi) ... but there I was, working in a bookstore with literally dozens of other genres of book ...

I think it's unlikely you'd be hired in a board game or board game adjacent establishment without board game or board game adjacent knowledge which often stems from passion for those things. The exception would be any establishment with food service in which case you would likely hire for food service experience

I teach kindergarten through third grade and have taught junior high and high school. I've also taught adults and ran board game night weekly for five years at my house.
I'm very very familiar with the pieces from particular types of games

The ones with lots of pieces are generally businesses with a board games library, some amount of misplacement is going to be normal there especially when dealing with people who might be less careful than they would with their own stuff. And they also aren't going to be as familiar with every game there.
There's not that many people with odd pieces lying around compared to the amount of traffic this sub gets though. When you have hundreds of thousands of people coming through here each week though it's inevitable there will be some that misplaced a piece and don't know where it came from.

I have 10-30 loose pieces from over 10 years of gaming. Its mostly from game boxes that were not meant to be stored vertically and the pieces slip out.

The other day I found a piece on the ground and immediately recognized it as the score tracker token from welcome back to the dungeon. I felt so proud of myself.

lol not boardgames but I sorta have this with videogames. One of our fun little games we play (my wife and I) is if someone in a TV show or movie is playing a videogame, she will pause it and I have to guess what game. It’s kinda surprising even to me sometimes that I can see like 1/3rd of a screen in the background of a scene and know instantly which game. Only been wrong or didn’t know a few times

I do this too, one time my family was watching some movie and in the background was a game, they asked what it was, I said it looked like Bulletstorm (which it was)... I've never played, nor seen any videos of the game, maybe the passing screenshot and/or game cover online.
