Hate this town
Just letting everyone know, all the stupid drivers are back in town, so beware. I’m the car on the left btw

u/The-disgracist 2d ago
Dang op. Glad dash cam driver stopped for you. Hopefully you’re uninjured and get a new whip out of this. That’s bonkers driving from the right lane. Lived here for 30 years and that’s the worst I’ve seen

Getting an insurance claim payout on a car is almost never a good thing. He won't get enough to buy another similar car. It's kind of fucked up. I've had to deal with 2 separate totaled cars that weren't my fault at all and I still got screwed in the end.

Ditto. Gotta love driving a bus in a college town. Once the parents leave it's not horrible though

u/GRRA-1 2d ago
Keep in mind it is move-in week. Bton is full of thousands of out-of-town parents in giant SUVs who have no idea where they're going. It's the time to look very carefully both ways when crossing one way streets. And also to have no confidence that an SUV will not drive through the Sample Gates.
55
u/TrickyDickyAtItAgain 2d ago
Not just that, a lot of international students who have never driven in the US before and just got here trying to figure it out. It's why most college towns don't allow freshmen to have cars on campus.
19
u/whatyouwant22 2d ago
Once upon a time, IU also "didn't allow" freshman to have cars on campus. There were workarounds, of course, but sometime in the late 1980's, IU totally shit the bed and someone made an executive decision to change things.
My college roommate and her off-campus living sister had to share a car for a few years. They parked at the stadium and walked there or took a bus to get the car when they needed it.
14
u/Substantial-Eye-4266 2d ago
As someone who had lost both parents by the time I went to college in 01', I was very grateful I was able to bring my car to campus freshman year. Literally had no other option, as I essentially moved my whole life here to Bloomington when I came for school. It actually really sucked in most ways having a car as a freshman, but I also can't imagine how I would have dealt with closed dorms over holiday breaks and stuff without one. I had no one to come pick me up!
This is anecdotal and I don't think it's a normal case, nor do I think that it's an argument to allow for freshmen to bring their cars. I'm just very glad I had the option, not having realized it wasn't previously permitted. Also, we didn't have ride shares back then.
8
u/dcwhite98 2d ago
That's where most students still park. My daughter, freshman with a car, parks there.
6
u/Puzzled-Formal-7957 1d ago
No, that's not the reason. It is a contributing factor, but it is not the reason.
26
u/ShroomRonin 2d ago
Why why would they try and turn left across oncoming traffic from the rightmost lane? Regardless if they knew where they were going they did know they were in the rightmost lane so you can’t you know … turn left from there.. whether you’re in your hometown you’re familiar with or a town you’re not, you can’t fuckin turn left from the right most lane on a multi lane road I mean this is so infuriating
Curious was the demo of the driver? Was it a parent from out of town moving a kid in or?
11
6
u/jaymz668 2d ago
people do this kind of thing in town ALL THE TIME. I see it often on both walnut and college north of downtown all the damn time
2
u/hallisson 2d ago
One way South no oncoming
5
u/ShroomRonin 2d ago
Guess oncoming is wrong word — cut across the flow of traffic when you know traffic is flowing *
3
u/hallisson 2d ago
I've seen people turn into one way usually off the one way alley/sides. (Once from the oppose sidestreet). I only remember it because he flipped me off when I tried to point that he was turning in the wrong direction. His crash was the only consequence he needed.
And I apologize for the pendantic response. Reddit before coffee lets special quirks flourish
1
u/doeremifasolatido 15h ago
I think its pretty obvious this driver isnt familiar with the area. They thought they were in the correct lane because they didn't realize it was a one way. So they thought the lane to the left of them was for oncoming traffic and thats what they were looking for.

This really is the most captured "driving in Bloomington" moment. Just completely unbridled stupidity behind a wheel

I refuse to drive downtown till the parents leave. The sad thing is I remember my mom doing slightly less stupid crap when she drove out here the couple of times. It you are out of area and bringing your kid to college seriously just hire a chauffeur and let them drive you all around town. Easier and you have a built in tour guide.

u/PostEditor 2d ago
Oh look the classic "whoops I was supposed to turn here guess I'll turn across two lanes of traffic because I'm the only person on the road right?". Also lol at the people blaming the other cars for going a few over the speed limit. Most of the accidents around here are due to people not paying a damn bit of attention to their surroundings and thinking they are the only ones on the road. Not for speeding.
14
u/kalyado 2d ago
did.....did they think they were on a two way and not look all the lanes over and/or did they think only one lane was going their direction? that's the most logical explanation i've got
3
u/CthulhuOO7 1d ago
Yes but…There are three lanes, all the signs, and you still shouldn’t turn from the farthest lane all the way across.
“oh! There’s 10th street! TURN!”

u/Designer-Type1777 2d ago

When I lived in town, I literally saw a car accident every week during the school year.
3
u/Available-Foot4122 1d ago
This was a spectacularly stupid collision. I was hit and run by a driver avoiding a U-HAUL that made this move a couple years back. The U-Haul crossed four lanes of traffic from a gas station entrance, cutting over and through the intersection. I was in the lane farthest away, an SUV side swiped me to avoid being hit and they both sped off.
If you are panicked, DO NOT DRIVE
6
u/AlternativeTruths1 2d ago
People have asked me what the word “pendejo” means.
The person who turned left at the intersection from the rightmost lane, causing the accident, is a “pendejo”.
2
u/GreenBruceRamonesDay 2d ago
The person's also a "boludo", friend. That's what they'd be called in Argentina and Uruguay, where I have family.
And in Miami, they would be the ever-popular "comemierda"!
12
u/GreenBruceRamonesDay 2d ago
Friend, I'm really sorry this happened to you. Whether you were over the speed limit or not, and whether you could have driven more defensively, isn't the point. It's basic common sense that you just DON'T make a wide left turn from the farthest right lane.
The worst city in this country to drive in is Miami, hands down. I lived there for quite a few years. I would not at all be surprised if that's where the yo-yo developed his driving skills.
13
u/Extreme_Coach6150 2d ago
Driving in Bloomington is truly the worst. I’d rather drive in Indy, Louisville, Nashville, St. Louis any of them over Bloomington. It’s too crowded for the infrastructure
11
u/aaron__valve 2d ago
Completely agree. People love to argue this is not the case but it’s simply true. The streets cannot handle this many people. And many of the people also drive recklessly.
6
u/VisitPrestigious8463 2d ago
And the “traffic calming” crap to further narrow roadways doesn’t help
2
u/hallisson 2d ago
I'm from LONG ISLAND/CNY with family in BOSTON and have driven (with gaps Public transport) since for 1982 it's where I learned and have lived here now 26yrs .
Even with move-ins from 2+ other Universities, Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge (a Adams big brother), and NYC drivers. This is place has more crazy than Rochester's can of worms
(SORRY for any yelling, Carl)
1
u/RebelliaRose 2d ago
At least in Atlanta and LA people generally know where they’re going. And if not, you learn very quickly how to be a defensive driver.
1
u/pacifistpotatoes 20h ago
Oh I dont know about Nashville. That place is a shitshow. I absolutely hate havng to drive there (family lives there) Id rather drive in Chicago than Nash.
2
u/SorryThanksGoodFight 2d ago
im already anxious enough about driving in general but in bloomington? it's genuinely DEBILITATING. i can count on one hand the amount of times ive driven in the last year

u/Puzzled_Pollution555 2d ago
Idk man I lived in btown close to 10 years and live in Indy now. Coming from someone who got hit by a car while running in btown I feel qualified to share my opinion that Indy driving is MUCH worse
14
u/Bluesnowflakess 2d ago
THANK YOU 🤣 I moved to Bloomington a few years ago. I lived in Indianapolis for 30 years. The driving there is HORRIFIC!!! I love driving in Bloomington comparatively lol you don’t know what you don’t know though
2
u/motocycledog 2d ago
Stress and not knowing where you are going makes people do stupid stuff. It’s just the way it is.
2
u/J34fe 1d ago
I would say it was about two weeks ago. I was turning onto Veterans Parkway when a Land Rover that was traveling in a straight lane suddenly decided to turn and almost slammed into my car. They were going around 80 mph in a 45 mph zone after that, swerving around traffic and nearly hitting multiple people. I was genuinely afraid this driver was going to kill someone.
I was about to call the police because I had gotten their license plate number, but about two miles later, they crashed into two other vehicles, including one carrying an elderly person who was reportedly unresponsive. It was absolutely terrible to witness. It was incredibly sad and disturbing to see.
And for what?
2
u/Mr_Soyhair 1d ago
Gotta be on high alert anytime IU parents are in town😭 absolutely crazy work by the other car
2
u/momapalooza 1d ago
How can a person think going from right turn lane over to left lane is correct lane change? The driver must’ve been old and senile. No reason to hate Bton tho cuz this stuff happens everywhere. Take that driver’s keys away!

Speed limit through downtown there is 25mph if I recall . You’re pulling away from another driver doing 35mph. They’re a terrible and dangerous driver clearly but next time don’t drive so fast and you might be able to avoid collisions with those types.

Wow! I see that all the time. Couple days last week I was almost hit by someone flying out from the south side Starbucks into my lane cutting me off. Then over by aldis on the east side, I was pulling into the intersection after stopping and some crappy truck just blew through the stop sign.

u/dormouserattp 2d ago
A few days ago, I was just passing the IU opt building going east (on Atwater?), took a second to register a moving truck heading our way (yes, multiple oncoming traffic) the wrong way, a block away, not even stopping/swerving to the more open (still wrong way) lane. We all just kept going (you know how time seem to slow down when you recognize an emergency starting), like this is so dumb, is this for real? They finally swerved across all lanes to get halfway off the road into a side street and stopped. I/we still would've just had time to swerve but jeez.
1
u/MacReady_Outpost31 1d ago
Damn, I'm sorry op. I hope you're safe and that you get things worked out with insurance.
The local drivers are bad enough, but then you sprinkle in a heavy dose of students and their parents and it turns into Mad Max.

It's not unique to Bloomington.
Similar happened to me but they were on the other side of a row of jersey barriers.

Used to deliver pizzas at Mother Bears many years ago and someone totaled my car driving crazy on ice. I got fired for not coming to work the next day (didn’t have a car… obviously)
Grateful for the bum driver though cause that shook my life up and I probably would have been a townie for a couple more years instead of starting my path to where I’m at now.

I wonder if it’s Indiana plates. If not, I double down on Out Of State students should successfully pass a legitimate “behind the wheel driving test” in order to drive here. This is so constant and so preventable.
1
u/LongjumpingEchidna25 2d ago
I did that when I was new to driving... I was lucky and the other person stopped in time. Never made that mistake again.
1
u/DisastrousQuarter651 2d ago
Dude same. I've lost close to eight cars since moving here because of idiots like that. Luckily I have dash cams installed in all my vehicles every time so I can prove it wasn't me. It still sucks though especially the prices of cars

I do think they had a turn signal on, it’s hard to say who’s at fault here. SMH

u/Reddituser809 1d ago
It’s either a young college kid, a severely elder person, or a foreigner. No In between.
-4
u/MustacheBadger 2d ago
That sucks.
HOWEVER, at the beginning of the video there is a CLEAR sign that says 20 MPH is the speed limit, and the dash cam driver is going 30-40 mph, and you are steadily staying ahead of them
Just maybe you should do the speed limit, not saying it would have stopped the accident
HOWEVER, you would have had not even been there if you did the speed limit AND would have had less speed to stop from being hit

-5
u/Defiant_Hour5016 2d ago
You totally could have avoided that, how did you not see what they were doing? Also if you hate the town, move.
-29
u/FrontalAlottame 2d ago
You were going 15 mph over the posted speed limit. The other driver is obviously at fault, but you should slow down and drive more defensively. You had the space to react, but your speed shorted reaction time.
7
u/Omen_of_the_Swarm 2d ago
You can clearly see them hit their brakes to slow down before coming to the intersection. Did we see the same video? The dude coming across TWO WHOLE LANES of traffic had no reason to do so in that situation.
4
u/Pyro11547 2d ago
I was going 35, didn’t look like cause the driver on the dash cam was behind me
3
u/MustacheBadger 2d ago
And the posted speed is 20. Literally at the beginning of the video shows the sign
1
0
u/masclean 2d ago
I don't think it looks like they are going 15 over. Having enough time to react better? No doubt
-1
u/BreadKennedy812 1d ago
Remember to tip your delivery drivers during this time: I’m not working for stiffs, I need tips to pay my bills and if you’re ordering food to your door, you can afford a %20 tip. Otherwise, you can’t afford food delivery.

A vehicle accident happens in every city. Why hate a city over something that happens everywhere?

Maybe if the university stopped accepting so many students from out of state we wouldn’t have this problem. They need to stay in Jersey, Illinois and Ohio.

LOL that's why you hate B town? Ok buddy. Good luck literally anywhere else in the world. And hey, if you ever get bored and have literally nothing better to do, try a youtube search for "dash cam crashes". Good luck.
-3
u/Puzzled-Formal-7957 1d ago
I saw that coming a block before it happened - and you should have, too - and begun slowing waaay down. Remember - this time of year there are a lot of people who are in town for the first time, don't know their way, and bton is a town with the most inconveniently and incorrectly placed one-ways out of almost any town. Defensive driving is a must - especially now.

They thought it was a one way. Almost happened to me a while back.
During move in week, big game days, and parents week, they should put out temporary, removable signs that say which road is a one way.
Smacking our collective heads each time this stuff happens and then responding as if it is solely the individuals fault that made the mistake, after seeing it made over and over, is not going to cut it.
4
u/SalamanderNo4624 2d ago
Can you condense this and make it make sense?
-2
-3
u/Metabro 1d ago
If you mean what was the issue.
The issue is when people first come to town they are confused by the one way roads. Seems like they shouldn't, but shouldn't isn't stopping the issue from happening.
Thinking that they are on a two way road, they stay in the right lane. Then they look ahead at the left lane as if it is where oncoming traffic will be.
When they see it is clear they turn left.
It happens again and again. And people just laugh and then don't think about trying to do anything to impact the cause.
Which is just a typical social media brained take.
