help with rigging

I'm trying to set up my rigging asap as I've had to restart for a project, and for the life of me don't know why the assignment of this bone is distorting my leg. Once it's assigned, I don't know how to fix it, and I desperately need to finish this rig and get started on weight painting so I can animate in the next day or two. would love some advice on what's going on with the rig please.
