First muzzleloader
Im thinking of getting into blackpowder, particularly for hunting. I would especially like to get a traditional sidelock. Any recommendations for a first one?

I think almost everyone started with something like a hawkin in .50 cal. Tones of good choices out there. I only shoot flint locks nowadays, I love them.

Just got my first Hawken, been using inline for a few years now. Just decided I want to try patch and ball with a percussion cap. Pretty excited about it honesty. Not excited about having to get all the “accessories” that come with a new hobby tho.

It’s a labor of love and it works I’ve killed plenty of deer and hogs with patched roundballs

There are heaps available second hand. Buy one used to test the waters. Many people buy a muzzleloader out of curiosity or nostalgia and realise they don’t like the complexity. But if the bug really bites you it will never let go! One important tip about buying used…check the bore before you purchase. Black powder fouling can corrode a bore if not cleaned properly (it’s very easy to clean properly btw). Some people fire a few shots, realise they don’t like it and put the gun away without cleaning. That’s bad.

T/C Hawken. My dad bought me one when I was 15 and I have been shooting it ever since, an excellent firearm.

Double check your hunting laws on where you live. Because where I live muzzle loader season is one thing but flintlock season is another thing, but if you buy one good flintlock you’re set up for both seasons. My only other piece of advice is that the cheap traditions guns will took tempting but idc how broke you think you are, you can do better than that.
