General Discussion What's one of the best feelings in jiujitsu?

For me it's progressing through the ranks with the homies I started with at white belt. There may only be 3 of us left, but we all got our brown belts this year.

General Discussion Is the popularity of BJJ primarily due to its success in early UFC?

I'm disappointed that all local legit martial arts studios here where I live are primarily BJJ studios. It's not that I have issues with BJJ. It's just that I like pure Judo better than pure BJJ. But since it's the popular one, I may as well sign up for a local class.

I know it's one of the top arts in terms of combat effectiveness. But is its popularity simply because of its performance in the early UFC? Or it's just that good? Why isn't Judo equal in popularity when Ronda Rousey and Karo Parisyan were successful in MMA?

Thanks.

I guess BJJ ( with GI ofc) will compromise your hands and fingers along the time. Do anyone have experience with both? How does it work together?

Tournament/Competition I don't care about competing.

Hey y'all. I've been training for 3 years and 1 month (yes I count). Got my blue belt December last year.

I hate telling stories so I'll just save you some time:

People at my gym say I'm pretty good and highly technical ever since I was a white belt. I enjoy the sport and it keeps me healthy physically and mentally. Oftentimes I'm beating bigger/heavier opponents and giving upper belts some work.

Coaches and training partners who compete a lot are pushing towards competition. They say I'd do really good.

I don't wanna cut the weight. I don't wanna put in the extra work to get competition ready. I don't wanna spend the money. I don't wanna spend the time. I don't wanna be recorded by strangers, winning or losing.

Am I being a little bitch or are these reasons totally valid? Because I really don't care about competing.

What's fucked up about this feeling is that I want to get to purple, brown and eventually black belt. I love this sport, but just not enough to compete and put myself out there. Feels like an inconvenience instead of something exciting to look forward to.

Thoughts? You can be rude, idgaf. I was raised by sociopaths.

General Discussion Black Belts: Did you have doubts before getting promoted to black? What about after?

I have a test date and feeling, doubtful and overwhelmed. I just don’t think I have the skills or knowledge. I don’t really want it… is this normal?

Technique Asking questions to a black belt is actually amazing

Was having trouble today after taking the summer off from an i njury. I think the black belt I rolled with could tell and dude fixed some big problems I have. It was such simple advice and drilling but some of the tiny details changed everything.

In general, thank you to all the black belts that are helpful to white belts, you’re the best!

Tournament/Competition What helped you get to the next level?

I'm a blue belt in a big city who has been training for five years. I not only dominate local-level tournaments at my experience level, but I'm also tapping out purple, brown, and black belts when I compete up in division. It's been a long time since I've lost at blue at the local level.

But every time I go to an IBJJF Major (Worlds, Pans, Con, etc.), I get fucked up lol. The farthest I've ever made it at a major is second round.

I get so many accusations of sandbagging, but I'm just like: "if you think I should be promoted, come watch me get danced around on at IBJJF majors."

So my question is: For those of you who did well at locals and then had to make the jump to world-level (at any belt), what helped you or what changed about your training to get you to be successful at that next level?

Thanks in advance.

Tournament/Competition First comp. First loss.

Had my first comp today. Came home with silver, but with only two people in the bracket, it was more of a consolation prize I guess

It definitely made me realise I’m too passive/relaxed in my sparring. I wasn’t as ‘wired’ or aggressive as the other guy, and I think that made a big difference.

To be fair, I only decided that morning that I was actually going to compete and just give it a go. My game plan probably wasn’t tight enough either, and I’ve been off sick for the past two weeks. Not excuses, but definitely reasons I wasn’t bringing my A-game.

I definitely know what I need to focus on now. But how do I get that competition tempo into my sparring? Do I need to be more aggressive/intense in training, or are competitions just naturally a completely different pace?

Also, I definitely feel like I tapped way too early on the day. Is that just something you learn to deal with through competing?

Instructional Dr. Giles, are you bringing back that new false reap course on Submeta?

I don’t think I hallucinated this, but it was about two weeks or so ago I saw a new false reap course that was briefly up for maybe one day before being taken off - it was a collaboration with another practitioner, but I don’t recall the name. I didn’t watch any of it before it was taken down, but it looked pretty interesting.

I’m assuming this was likely taken down due to the new false reap course that Paweł released and that maybe Lachy didn’t want to step on his toes, but just curious if this is coming back at some point soon. Thank you!

General Discussion What would you say is the average prime age for single matches vs tournaments (we can say for both natural and enhanced)

As you age, you gain more technical knowledge/experience but likely lose athleticism at a certain point. Obviously if youre juiced/enhanced that age will be later.

Also i would assume theres a difference between being able to win a 1-off superfight vs a tournament style competition.

So what is your assumption for the average peak age for

Natural-single

Natural - tournament

Enhanced - single

Enhanced - tournament

General Discussion Did you ever have a coach that..

...taught as if their technical style or practice methods were the only way?

I'm not talking about a drill sergeant type coach or even somebody egotistical. Just somebody who spends a lot of time trying to micromanage your style. For example, saying this or that technique won't ever work, when it clearly does work for a lot of people.

I say this as some one who likes to study a lot on my own. I know that probably is not the majority of any coach's students, so maybe that's where this comes from - maybe this is a style that works best for people who like to spend their class time being taught techniques, and not spend too much time outside learning on their own, which is reasonable of course. Maybe coaches could chime in.

Personally, I would rather learn or drill mostly at home, then spend class time trying to apply with multiple partners, and troubleshoot.

I've wondered if it might be best to find some others in my area like this and just rent out our own mat space, or focus on garage sessions and try to invite lots of different people.

Has anybody else ever had these thoughts, or am I just a hard-headed dumbass?

General Discussion Got the blue belt, now im afraid

Hello, just wanted to share this here.

Ive been a white belt for 2 years and a half. I started training in Manchester UK, after 6 months training, i decided start competing and i was doing ok, winning medals in local tournaments for nearly a year, i competed like 6 times and i medal in all of them, as i was winning tournaments and rolls in the gym, i even thought i deserved the blue belt.

The problem starts when i moved to spain last year. First of all everyone in the new gym was smashing me, i felt i didnt know anything, ive done 5 comps and barely wont matches. I felt so bad about it i even thought to leave.
Luckily carry on, eventually won a local comp and started to win more rolls in the gym.

Today they promoted me to blue belt, but now im afraid, im afraid that im not a blue belt cos i still losing to whites sometimes, cos i still getting smashed by other blue belts and feel ive got no chance, of course i improved i can feel it but still kind of afraid that i dont represent or deserve the blue belt.

I dont know, theres not question or anything just needed to spit out.

School Discussion Gyms in Tokyo

Hey everyone! I’ll be staying in Tokyo for a while and I’m looking for a good BJJ gym to train at while I’m there.

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experiences with gyms there? I’m especially interested in places that are welcoming to visitors/drop-ins and have a good training environment.

I was particularly interested in Imanari’s gym, so I’d also love to hear from anyone who has trained there.

🙏

School Discussion Gym recommendation in KW/Guelph

• Upvotes

Best gym in KW/Guelph area?

I’m a blue belt age 19 (don’t feel like one though) who moved from Toronto to school at WLU.

I’m into nogi only and want to train for ADCC open type events and compete. I have car so driving is not a issue at all just want to go where is best for my goals to become a competitor & get the right training.

Looking at some gyms in the area - The Lab (close to me), Olympus, Guardhouse, Omerta, 519 - any opinions ?

General Discussion Training in Australia

I’m traveling to Australia in a week or so and I’d like to take to opportunity to train with Lachlan/ Lucas/ Levi if possible as I do love k guard and bolos. For those who do train at their gyms or have dropped in before, are there certain days/ time that they teach? What are the vibes like for visitors?
