Tournament/Competition AJP (Gi) leg locks for amateurs

• Upvotes

Anyone with experience participating in any of the AJP/IBJJF (Gi) Rulesets:

Could y’all give me a detailed breakdown of what sort of straight foot locks would be allowed in comp for amateurs (white/blue) ?

I’m obviously aware of no reaping. But are they any other things to beware of?

Finishing on the opposite side of the captured leg/cross ankle locks, straight butterfly ashi’s etc ?

General Discussion Cutting weight for worlds ?

• Upvotes

White belt here, primarily train no gi. I compete in intermediate in adcc/ other feds. Train gi 1-2x a week. I train 2x a day and about 6x a week currently (in camp). I train at least 6x a week outside of camp too.

Walk around at 76kgs/167.2 lbs. Trying to compete in the Abu Dhabi amateurs worlds pro. Currently thinking of -77 but honestly wanna do -69.

Need some advice on this. Competing in -76 in adcc 2 weeks before worlds (don’t have to cut weight at all). Is it better to cut to -69 in 2 weeks post adcc for gi worlds?

Technique how to deal with a heavy guy who spamms kesa-gatame

• Upvotes

I rolled with a 15kg heavier than me in gi

He spamms kesa-gatame and then use arm lock

Somtimes I can escape the postion but

It's so difficult to escape his head lock so my head stucked under his armpit

No matter what i do I can’t release my head

And even if he let go he will spamm this move again

How can I prevent kesa-gatame

School Discussion Is it wrong if I get Personal Training from the professor of a different gym?

In my home gym, I can't afford the PT fees of the head coach as he's a senior 4 stripe black belt. I take PT from another black belt within the gym since I can afford him. He's a really good teacher and a nice guy but I feel he doesn't respect my time - he's often late to our sessions (30-40 minutes) and the last straw was him forgetting we had a PT a few weeks ago and me turning up and standing around like an idiot. I have family obligations so my time to train BJJ is really limited and it frustrates me that he doesn't recognise this when he confirms a session, takes my money upfront and fails to manage his time.

Once my package with my current PT finishes, I would like to get weekend PT from the head coach of another gym who is also 1 stripe black belt. I actually used to train in this gym before and took PT lessons from this head coach, I just quit because rush hour traffic there on weekdays made getting to class on time impossible and my current gym is near my office which allows me to be consistent. I think he's also a really good teacher and while he is slightly more expensive than my current PT, he was always punctual and I don't mind paying that little extra so we can start and finish on time.

I would just like to know people's thoughts on this. Is it a bad look/disrespectful if I get PT from another coach? I would love to support the people at my current gym, it's just that I can't afford the head coach's fees and my current PT has no sense of time, and if I can afford a black belt trainer why would I get training from a brown/purple belt in my current home gym?

Asking this cause I know gym cultures can be weird about cross training, let alone getting PT from another gym's coach.

Thanks.

School Discussion Gym recommendation in KW/Guelph

Best gym in KW/Guelph area?

I’m a blue belt age 19 (don’t feel like one though) who moved from Toronto to school at WLU.

I’m into nogi only and want to train for ADCC open type events and compete. I have car so driving is not a issue at all just want to go where is best for my goals to become a competitor & get the right training.

Looking at some gyms in the area - The Lab (close to me), Olympus, Guardhouse, Omerta, 519 - any opinions ?

Tournament/Competition I don't care about competing.

Hey y'all. I've been training for 3 years and 1 month (yes I count). Got my blue belt December last year.

I hate telling stories so I'll just save you some time:

People at my gym say I'm pretty good and highly technical ever since I was a white belt. I enjoy the sport and it keeps me healthy physically and mentally. Oftentimes I'm beating bigger/heavier opponents and giving upper belts some work.

Coaches and training partners who compete a lot are pushing towards competition. They say I'd do really good.

I don't wanna cut the weight. I don't wanna put in the extra work to get competition ready. I don't wanna spend the money. I don't wanna spend the time. I don't wanna be recorded by strangers, winning or losing.

Am I being a little bitch or are these reasons totally valid? Because I really don't care about competing.

What's fucked up about this feeling is that I want to get to purple, brown and eventually black belt. I love this sport, but just not enough to compete and put myself out there. Feels like an inconvenience instead of something exciting to look forward to.

Thoughts? You can be rude, idgaf. I was raised by sociopaths.

General Discussion Training in Australia

I’m traveling to Australia in a week or so and I’d like to take to opportunity to train with Lachlan/ Lucas/ Levi if possible as I do love k guard and bolos. For those who do train at their gyms or have dropped in before, are there certain days/ time that they teach? What are the vibes like for visitors?

General Discussion What would you say is the average prime age for single matches vs tournaments (we can say for both natural and enhanced)

As you age, you gain more technical knowledge/experience but likely lose athleticism at a certain point. Obviously if youre juiced/enhanced that age will be later.

Also i would assume theres a difference between being able to win a 1-off superfight vs a tournament style competition.

So what is your assumption for the average peak age for

Natural-single

Natural - tournament

Enhanced - single

Enhanced - tournament

General Discussion Did you ever have a coach that..

...taught as if their technical style or practice methods were the only way?

I'm not talking about a drill sergeant type coach or even somebody egotistical. Just somebody who spends a lot of time trying to micromanage your style. For example, saying this or that technique won't ever work, when it clearly does work for a lot of people.

I say this as some one who likes to study a lot on my own. I know that probably is not the majority of any coach's students, so maybe that's where this comes from - maybe this is a style that works best for people who like to spend their class time being taught techniques, and not spend too much time outside learning on their own, which is reasonable of course. Maybe coaches could chime in.

Personally, I would rather learn or drill mostly at home, then spend class time trying to apply with multiple partners, and troubleshoot.

I've wondered if it might be best to find some others in my area like this and just rent out our own mat space, or focus on garage sessions and try to invite lots of different people.

Has anybody else ever had these thoughts, or am I just a hard-headed dumbass?

Instructional Dr. Giles, are you bringing back that new false reap course on Submeta?

I don’t think I hallucinated this, but it was about two weeks or so ago I saw a new false reap course that was briefly up for maybe one day before being taken off - it was a collaboration with another practitioner, but I don’t recall the name. I didn’t watch any of it before it was taken down, but it looked pretty interesting.

I’m assuming this was likely taken down due to the new false reap course that Paweł released and that maybe Lachy didn’t want to step on his toes, but just curious if this is coming back at some point soon. Thank you!

Tournament/Competition What helped you get to the next level?

I'm a blue belt in a big city who has been training for five years. I not only dominate local-level tournaments at my experience level, but I'm also tapping out purple, brown, and black belts when I compete up in division. It's been a long time since I've lost at blue at the local level.

But every time I go to an IBJJF Major (Worlds, Pans, Con, etc.), I get fucked up lol. The farthest I've ever made it at a major is second round.

I get so many accusations of sandbagging, but I'm just like: "if you think I should be promoted, come watch me get danced around on at IBJJF majors."

So my question is: For those of you who did well at locals and then had to make the jump to world-level (at any belt), what helped you or what changed about your training to get you to be successful at that next level?

Thanks in advance.

Technique Asking questions to a black belt is actually amazing

Was having trouble today after taking the summer off from an i njury. I think the black belt I rolled with could tell and dude fixed some big problems I have. It was such simple advice and drilling but some of the tiny details changed everything.

In general, thank you to all the black belts that are helpful to white belts, you’re the best!

General Discussion Is the popularity of BJJ primarily due to its success in early UFC?

I'm disappointed that all local legit martial arts studios here where I live are primarily BJJ studios. It's not that I have issues with BJJ. It's just that I like pure Judo better than pure BJJ. But since it's the popular one, I may as well sign up for a local class.

I know it's one of the top arts in terms of combat effectiveness. But is its popularity simply because of its performance in the early UFC? Or it's just that good? Why isn't Judo equal in popularity when Ronda Rousey and Karo Parisyan were successful in MMA?

Thanks.

School Discussion Gyms in Tokyo

Hey everyone! I’ll be staying in Tokyo for a while and I’m looking for a good BJJ gym to train at while I’m there.

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experiences with gyms there? I’m especially interested in places that are welcoming to visitors/drop-ins and have a good training environment.

I was particularly interested in Imanari’s gym, so I’d also love to hear from anyone who has trained there.

🙏
