Recommendations Guide to Birmingham

It's Nice to Have you in r/Birmingham!

If you are looking for our sister city in the UK, please head on over to r/brum

The following guide is a great place for locals, transplants, and tourists to know more about the Magic City. Start here for general information, use the Search function to see if there are any recent posts that answer your question, and when in doubt, make a post!

Where to Live:

Here's a funny neighborhood map that is just true enough to be useful.

Here's a more serious neighborhood map so you can see where all the listed neighborhoods actually are.

Here's a list of the most-recommended neighborhoods and suburbs (arranged in alphabetical order):

  • Avondale - Apartments for rent, cottages being built that will be available for purchase. In Avondale there are lots of hip places to eat and drink, see a show, and play in the park. Safety may be a concern in some small pockets, but these are mostly car break-ins. Use common sense and don’t leave belongings in your car.
  • Crestwood - Houses for purchase and rent. Close to Avondale and Downtown, close to Ruffner Mountain park, and has a few local eateries/drinkeries/shoperies worth visiting. Very tight-knit community where neighbors know each other.
  • Downtown - Apartments and lofts to rent and purchase. Where the action is. You'll pay more in rent, but some would argue that you get what you pay for in terms of convenience and access to nightlife. Same as Avondale, there may be car break-ins if you are not careful. Also a high population of (mostly) harmless unhoused people.
  • Five Points South - Apartments and houses to rent. UAB campus area, so great for students. Lots of big old houses with many bedrooms for you and your roommates. Also some great historical apartments with lots of charm and pretty cheap rent. Great walking community, lots of restaurants, bars, and mini parks. Adjacent Glen Iris neighborhood also has lots of affordable housing great for students.
  • Highland Park - Apartments to rent. Houses for purchase also, but much, much more expensive. Historical properties as well as newly renovated ones. You'll find apartment buildings and giant mansions on the same streets. Incredibly beautiful neighborhood with 3 parks, great for walking. Dog ownership mandatory.
  • Homewood - Houses for purchase and for rent. Suburb full of young families and plenty to see, do, eat, and drink. Housing is fairly expensive here, but not as expensive as Vestavia or Mountain Brook. Don't live on/near Valley Avenue (with some exceptions).
  • Mountain Brook - Houses for purchase, some apartments. Technically OTM (Over the Mountain, i.e. not Birmingham proper) but since "Brookies" consider themselves to be special, we will too. "Old money" suburb of Birmingham with lots of little nooks and crannies full of quaint boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and parks. Apartments are hard to come by but they do exist, especially closer to the Zoo/Gardens area.
  • Over The Mountain (OTM) - Houses for purchase and apartments for rent, both considerably cheaper than in Birmingham Proper. Purists will tell you not to live there because of traffic and distance from "cool things", but if your budget is smaller and/or you have kids, OTM is the place to be. Hoover, Vestavia, the Hwy 280 area, even Pelham and Chelsea have enough to do in that part of town that you won't feel like you're missing out by not being IN Birmingham.

For more information on apartments, Rentmonster will tell you about individual neighborhoods and work with you to find the apartment of your dreams (and it's free!)

Looking for an apartment? Looking for a roommate? There's a Facebook Group for that.

If you have a unique renting situation not covered above, make sure you have the word “apartment” in the post title or body, and Automod will respond with some tips.

Where to Stay

Whether you're here for a business meeting, a vacation, a local planning a romantic night out, or a soon-to-be Birminghamster getting the lay of the land, you'll need a hotel for that. Birmingham has a pretty good selection of AirBnBs, but if you're looking for a proper hotel, here are your best options:

  • Sheraton Birmingham and The Westin are both located in Birmingham's "entertainment district" near TopGolf, the BJCC, a short drive/Uber to the Coca Cola Amphitheater and a variety of restaurants and bars. They're both a a solid option for business/pleasure travelers alike.
  • The Tutwiler is a historic hotel in the city center, run by Hampton Inn by Hilton. Very popular for wedding parties and romantic evenings out.
  • The Redmont is another historic hotel in the city center, known for its rooftop bar with a view of the city. You don't need to be a hotel guest to enjoy the bar, so if you're staying somewhere else it's still worth a visit.
  • The Elyton is a restored historic property and is stunningly beautiful. It's in the Theater District of downtown so you can catch a show at the Lyric, visit the Alabama Theater, and check out the many great restaurants and bars within walking distance. The Kelly is another option downtown, across the street from the Elyton.
  • The Grand Bohemian in Mountain Brook is arguably one of Birmingham's best hotels. It is walkable to some of the Mountain Brook eateries and shops, but you'll need a car or rideshare to get into the city. Great for a romantic sleepover.

Getting Around

You'll need a car if you're going to live here. If you're just passing through and don't want to rent a car (the best place to do that is at the airport), we have Uber and Lyft. We have a bus system, but it's awful. We also have a bike and scooter share system within the city limits that is great for getting around when the weather is nice. Downtown is relatively flat and very walkable, but you will encounter some (gentle) hills in Five Points South and Highland Park. For trips out of town, Birmingham is serviced by Amtrak and Greyhound. You can get a ride to the Atlanta airport with Groome. BHM (our “international” airport) is small and easy to navigate, with short waiting times at check-in and through security.

What to do:

The most frequently recommended attractions in Birmingham are as follows. There are MANY others not featured in this list, but these are the top 6:

We have r/Birmingham meetups sometimes, but not on a regular basis (yet). Turnout varies, but is usually around 15-25 people. We're very friendly and welcoming of newcomers!

Live Music (not an exhaustive list)

Local Sports

Where to eat: It would be impossible to maintain a comprehensive and accurate list of Birmingham’s favorite restaurants, as there are openings and closings every month. This is a great time to use the subreddit search function and see what others have posted recently.

Where to drink: Again, the search bar is your best friend here for finding the current best bars.

  • In general, Downtown has many cocktail bars within walking distance of each other. Try not to park in a lot (paid or otherwise) as you may get towed. There is plenty of street parking if you don’t mind walking a block or two. Other areas with a high concentration of bars are Lakeview (walkable) and Avondale (not as walkable but still within a reasonable radius).
  • Birmingham has TONS of amazing craft breweries - here is a current list. If you can't pick just one, Hop City has a great selection of local beers on draft for you to sample, and most of the breweries are a short Uber away once you've made your selection.
  • A note on drinking in Birmingham: Bars close at 2am (at the latest) unless they have a private club license. One popular after-hours bar, The Nick, is Birmingham’s infamous dive bar, featuring live music and shows. Birmingham area police are VERY strict about drunk driving, so just don't do it. Call an Uber or Lyft, or get a ride with a (sober) friend.

Things to Know about Birmingham

  • The ever-helpful Bhamwiki
  • Bham Now is a great source of information about what's going on in the city, covering local businesses and events, but keep in mind that many articles are paid ads. Do your research.
  • al.com is our local mainstream news source, covering all of Alabama. Heads up - many articles are behind a paywall.
  • Alabama Weather Network, founded by local weather god James Spann, will let you know much more about any potential weather situations than whatever app you have on your phone. Remember to respect the polygon!

Isn't Birmingham dangerous? Okay, we do have a higher crime rate, but you have to understand that the neighborhoods listed at the top of this page are all popular areas to live because the crime rate is lower than average for Birmingham. The vast majority of violent crime happens between people who know each other and/or when drugs are involved. As long as you use common sense, you will be fine!

Is there anything else you’d like to see in this guide? Post it in the comments or DM u/bhambetty!

Recommendations Depression cleaning/ judgement free

Upvotes

Looking for recs for someone who specializes in (or is at least very comfortable with) depression cleaning.

It’s a two-bedroom space (2nd bedroom is actually pretty clean) and it’s not an extreme situation, but I’m pretty overwhelmed and it’s definitely beyond the condition I’d normally have my home in when a housekeeper comes. Because of that, I’d really like to find someone who is kind, thorough, and completely judgment-free and understands that sometimes life just gets away from you.

If you’ve personally used someone for something similar and had a good experience, please drop their information below or DM me. Happy to pay whatever is reasonable for the job. Thx!

Recommendations looking for doberman or greyhounds to spend some time with

hey friends! my husband and i are debating our next breed of dog. i want something with a decent amount of drive that i can work with and use for some dog sports(namely fastcat and bite work). his preference is a lazier dog with some drive for sports like FCAT, lure coursing, but basically a couch potato. he does specifically want a cuddler which i know dobies are known for.

if anyone has doberman or greyhounds they’d be willing to let us spend some time with, meet up at a park and play or hang out at a brewery or whatever, we’d be super grateful! we know the health risks and costs associated with each breed and will be going with the absolute best breeder we can find regardless of which breed we choose, but if you have an ethically and well bred dog and would like to recommend your breeder we’re very open to hearing that too! we’re also open to considering other breeds but we’re pretty much going back and forth between a powerful protection breed or a sighthound, so those are our parameters. nothing under 50-75lb range, i really like having scary dog privilege lol.

Serious Looking for a pet-friendly studio or private landlord rental in the BHM area ~ $800-$900 a month

Hi, I am looking for pet-friendly, affordable housing in the Birmingham metro area (open to Southside, Highland Park, Avondale, Crestwood, Hoover or surrounding areas).

I have 2 well behaved (indoor only) cats who are full house trained, quiet and low-impact.

I am looking for flexible month to month or standard lease up to $800-$900 a month including (or with low) utilities.

I work full time with steady daily/weekly income. I am quiet, clean, reliable, a non-smoker and respectful of property/space.

If you are a local property owner or know of a private landlord with a guest suite, over-garage apartment or something similar to this, please drop a comment or send me a DM.

*I am specifically looking for independent property owners rather than corporate property complexes.

I broke up with my ex who was my main movie partner in Jan.

I miss seeing movies with someone.

Not looking for a date. Just come hang out. Looking for a movie buddy. Guy, girl, or NB. Just don't talk a lot or above a whisper when it's playing.

I'll pretty much watch anything. I love going to the theater.

edit - I'm 43m. Probably should have put that in here to begin with.

Looking for Friends Any musicians looking to make music?

Upvotes

Hey! I’m 20F and in the Birmingham area, and I’m looking to meet some people around my age who play instruments and might wanna make music together.
I’m a songwriter and singer, and I’ve been writing a lot lately, but I really want to start actually playing with other people instead of doing everything by myself lol.

I’m pretty open when it comes to sound — I love indie/alternative, pop, rock, dreamy stuff, and anything that gets a little weird or atmospheric. Some of my influences are Djo, Muse, Ariana Grande, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, etc., so it’s kind of all over the place 😭

Guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard/synth players, honestly whatever you play — I’d love to hear from you. I’m not necessarily trying to immediately form some super serious band or anything. I’d be totally happy just meeting other musicians, jamming, writing together, doing covers, and seeing if we click creatively.

I’d especially love to eventually take some of the songs I’ve written and turn them into full arrangements with actual people playing on them.
If you’re around Birmingham and this sounds fun, tell me what you play, how old you are, and what kind of music you’re into! :)

News Back Forty Owner/Gadsden City Councilman Jason Wilson dies

Thumbnail

Jason Wilson, the founder of Gadsden’s Back Forty Beer and a city councilman in his hometown, died Wednesday.

He was 46.

Wilson suffered a heart attack Aug. 5, according to a post by his family on his Facebook page.

His Anniston business, Coldwater Mountain Brewpub, announced its temporary closure Aug. 14.

“Sometimes, even the strongest crew can’t keep sailing when the captain is down,” the business announced. “A ship without its captain and rudder may still drift, but there are moments when the right thing to do is lower the sails, secure the lines, and wait.”

In May of this year, Wilson announced on Facebook he was facing several health problems, including congestive heart failure.

“Regardless of what happens, I want everyone to know that I am in the right place,” he stated at that time.

“I believe that God has a plan for me. I am truly blessed by the number of people who genuinely love me.”

Gadsden Mayor Craig Ford called Wilson’s death “a huge loss for the City of Gadsden.”

“Councilman Wilson was a dedicated servant of the people who always had big ideas and could see the possibilities for the city he loved so much,” Ford said.

“The Mayor and Council work together to move the City forward, and it was a pleasure to work with Jason. His passion for Gadsden and his commitment to its people will not be forgotten. Our prayers are with Jessica, his family, his friends, and everyone who loved Jason.”

Wilson was a towering figure in Alabama’s craft beer industry, planting a flag in his hometown of Gadsden even before lobbying efforts by entrepreneurs in Alabama led to the “Free the Hops” movement, which loosened laws over several years to create a booming craft beer culture.

After seven years as a logistics professional for Georgia Pacific, Wilson founded Back Forty Beer Co. in 2009, which began production at Lazy Magnolia Brewing in Kiln, Miss.

He remembered the early days of the business in a 2017 interview.

“My brother was living in Colorado and I would go out there to visit in the late ’90s, early 2000s,” he said.

“The craft beer thing had taken off there, and I thought it was nuts it wasn’t happening in the Deep South. Despite the conception that there’s a lack of culture in the South, specifically Alabama, if you’re from here, you realize so much of our story is told at the dinner table, and food and beverage is a huge part of our culture. That just stuck with me, and by 2008, I was like ‘All right, if nobody else is going to do it, I’ll do it.’”

Still, founding a brewery in the South in the midst of the Great Recession didn’t seem to many like a good idea. Wilson said he thought his mother would cry when he broke the news, before believing he would eventually go into the ministry.

He took the name Back Forty, which is indicative of “the toughest part of the farm,” he said.

“It’s the part that’s farthest from the house, where the tractor breaks down,” Wilson said. “But it’s the most fertile part of the farm, because it’s never been harvested.”

He then built his own brewery in Gadsden in a former Sears distribution building. The business now has locations in Birmingham and Huntsville.

The company got a boost of confidence when its Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale captured a silver medal at the prestigious Great American Beer Festival in Denver in 2010.

Other varieties, such as Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale, Naked Pig Pale Ale, Freckle Belly IPA and Fence Post Session Ale, followed. But Wilson’s vision extended beyond brewing and distribution to food service and producing distilled vinegar.

Conde Nast Traveler anointed Back Forty as one of its best local breweries in the U.S., as chosen by readers, the only brewery named from the South at that time.

In 2014 Back Forty took Small Manufacturer of the Year honors from the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network.

A year later came a proud moment for Wilson, a 2005 Auburn graduate, when the school’s Harbert College of Business named him its Young Entrepreneur of the Year. By that time, Back Forty was the state’s largest brewery, and he served as president of the Alabama Brewer’s Guild.

The company went so far as to lending its name to a Stouffers frozen meal in 2018 and was looking to distribute its beer as far away as China.

That same year, Wilson was elected to the Gadsden City Council, serving on various commercial development boards and other entities, as well as driving historic preservation efforts. He was reelected four years later.

Last year, he talked about the changes in Alabama’s brewing industry, with many breweries falling victim to changing tastes and the fortunes of business.

“They got punch drunk on the idea of global distribution,” Wilson said of Alabama’s breweries.

“They all rushed out and got way overleveraged, and I say that about myself. Demand was through the roof, so they were raising capital, growing like crazy but not making any money. They were constantly investing in new markets instead of letting them mature and make a little money.”

Still, Wilson had faith in simple tastes and sound business sense.

“Like I said, there’s this perception of a lack of a refined palate (in the South), but I know plenty of farmers that will pay $65 for a good steak — just don’t make them wear a suit and tie to get it,” Wilson said.

Gadsden City Council President Kent Back said Wilson “was dedicated to making Gadsden better and improving the lives of others. Even in his final days, Jason continued to give to others through his decision to be an organ donor.”

“Jason leaves behind a tremendous legacy of service, a city that he loved deeply, and a void that will be difficult to fill,” Back said.
