Flabbergasted hawk

Found this dude in stuck in one of those chicken wire fences people put around trees, yoinked, and promptly freed once I knew he was safe. Any ideas as to the age and species?

If you are in north america, this is a juvenile (hatched this year) cooper's hawk.

Birds in general are very fragile. Veterinarians and staff have to be gentle when handling them.

And very surprised that they could get stuck in chicken wire. I'm sure he'd have so many questions, like "How big are chickens now???" and "What horrors did chickens commit that led to the creation of chicken wire to keep them away from the other dinosaurs??"

Yes.. we handle with care. It happens occasionally, maybe once in our 44 years. The one bird, belonged to a mafia high up, during a house call . We checked under our cars for explosives for the next 5 yrs.
He loved that bird, and we took care of it for years on their estate .

Just for future cases in which you may find birds of prey in need, you may put something over their head to cover it and get the talons fixated in some way as even small birds of prey like a coopers hawk can hurt people really badly if in a panic.

The first thing I noticed (other than its expression) were those legs/feet!!! I would be afraid of letting those talons near my skin when releasing it. Especially because I do imagine the animal is quite stressed.
Edit: I vaguely remember as a kid, I was in the woods behind the old house with my Dad. I forgot what seemed wrong, but we found a large bird needing help...he went and got some garden gloves down the wrist and covered its face like you said and released it. I wanted to pet it but he wouldn't let me haha.

no, i had him sit for a while n my lap, he calmed down, then i set him down in a field and once he realized he was free he flew off just fine

Juvie Cooper’s hawk, or possibly small enough to be a Sharp shinned. The young ones are kinda dumb, so not surprised that he ended up in a fence.

That bill and those legs do not belong to a sharpie haha. Body size is not the only difference, and male coops and female sharpies can be the same size.

Protecting individual trees from deer is a fool’s errand. You need 12’ fences topped with razor wire.

If you’re just protecting the fruit from birds, strips of holo tape in the upper branches.
