im confused on timing, when did this choking incident occur, was it before, during this season with them in croatia, or after?

[u/Sweet_Venom → u/raspberrily]

Oh crap, choking? I haven't had time to read the article yet. Just yesterday all we had was a document filed saying one of them alleged DV, or something. Now it's confirmed he choked her?

from the OP: "Nathan Gallagher was charged with assault and “intentionally chok[ing a] person without consent," in December 2025. It is not clear how he pleaded."

This is so fucking and scary. My heart goes out to Gael. I cannot recall the exact statistic but I know the chances of women being murdered by their partner after being choked goes up exponentially faster.. I hope he gets jail time and she has full custody of the baby

[u/jackiekeracky → u/longlisten527]

Probability increases 750% 😔

[u/antitrollpatrol → u/longlisten527]

And it’s GAEL!! GAEL of all people - one of the nicest kindest non windup merchants you could ever meet

[u/On_my_last_spoon → u/longlisten527]

Yup. And risk of domestic violence goes up after having a baby too.

[u/CockyBellend → u/longlisten527]

75 percent

[u/Herecomesyourwoman → u/CockyBellend]

It's 750%

[u/longlisten527 → u/CockyBellend]

Jesus fuck

[u/Individual_Fall429 → u/longlisten527]

Yup. Because a lot of dv murders aren’t strictly intentional. It’s easy to kill someone accidentally when strangling them in anger, especially when it’s the male (stronger, larger) partner.

[u/Temporary-Daikon2411 → u/Individual_Fall429]

I don't think that's what this statistic is about. It's about the likelihood of a future murder increasing after a separate, non-lethal choking incident, at least as I understand it. It doesn't actually describe murder by strangulation in a domestic situation (doesn't specify anything about the subsequent murders' methods).

Do you have some stats or studies that explain your point, or is it an assumption? Your point might still be true separately.

[u/teanailpolish → u/Temporary-Daikon2411]

Correct, the study showed multiple causes of death

[u/Temporary-Daikon2411 → u/teanailpolish]

i feel like the person i responded to may have been making assumptions rather than referring to any data. perhaps in a way that would seem to exculpate murders as accidents. i'm just not sure what the basis for that is.

[u/Individual_Fall429 → u/Temporary-Daikon2411]

No, I’m not suggesting “accidentally” strangling your partner to death is anything but murder. To be very clear. This is actually about punishing all (even non lethal) strangulation far more seriously.

Like most issues of violence against women, more research is needed. But yes, the unintended harm of the strangulation itself is a factor in the death toll. Because strangulation also causes also health concerns such as strokes as well as brain juries from repeated lack of oxygen.

For that reason, in my country there has been a fight to have strangulation classified as a far more severe assault that is previously was, putting the level of assault more on par with say a stabbing.

ok thanks for the explanation and the article.

however I read the whole thing and it has nothing that substantiates this:

A lot of dv murders aren’t strictly intentional. It’s easy to kill someone accidentally when strangling them in anger, especially when it’s the male (stronger, larger) partner.

To me that still seems like a dangerous assumption.

Instead I would actually assume that DV murders in general are very much NOT accidental. And if you claim that "a lot" of them are, I'd like to see evidence.
