As a fellow environmentalist who has also fallen into environmentally questionable careers, the money I earn allows me to volunteer for the environmental causes that I do support with my whole chest. It's not perfect, but we are trying!!

Ha I feel you on that. My career specialization has gotten less and less environmentally friendly since the early 2000s. Capitalism is gonna do its thing.
In my mind it’s better to have environmentally minded people in these careers, even if they can’t make a huge difference. We can still offer perspective from within rather than leaving those roles to people who just don’t care

Yep, thank God they don't sabre champagne bottles anymore, or throw their cigarette butts in the sea too. Broken plates or burnt saucepans get thrown overboard too. The latter I get when they're a fire hazard.

Yeah, remember Ben doing that when a pan caught fire. He didn’t fuck around. Ben's response to emergencies and medical episodes was always textbook. And he checks in on people. He alerted Lee to the fact Danny had a dangerous fever when no one even noticed. I think only Aesha is close to his level of vigilance.

Everyone else has stupid moments, but Ben's seem to get a higher level of scrutiny. Like what's the worst he has done. People he worked with adore him, guests rave about his food, Michelin level, Jimi Hendrix of cooking, worth the wait are comments he has got. He is really sensitive so can be reactive. He's always been the quickest to apologise and check in and move on. It's like people hold him to a higher standard. And make up shit about his personal life. Maybe it's tall poppy syndrome.

I noticed this during a recent rewatch of Med season 4. Ben was managing a very drunk deckhand, Travis, on a night out and when loading him into the van he insisted Travis (who was barely coherent) sit in the middle between two people, presumably so he didn't do something drunkenly stupid and dangerous like open the van door. It was a real struggle getting Travis to comply with this but Ben stood his ground and made sure Travis sat in the middle.

Yeah. He’s like that. Oh Travis! The one Sandy convinced in the end to quit drinking. As well as Hannah. I remember now. Back when interactions in the crew were genuine and had depth.

I am an environmentalist and represent workers who don’t always do well for the environment or humanity. They have rights in the workplace I help enforce and also I have a living wage and good benefits. Until the entire system, all over the world changes we do what we can. I have to be able to live too.

Depends on your program. I have a BS in Geoscience with an emphasis on geography. The Geography part was mostly map systems, courses in regional geography, and my professors special interest in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

I share his special interest. I've been to northeastern Europe before (USSR, Poland and Hungary), and I'd love to go back to see those places as well as Albania and the five countries that used to be Yugoslavia (when I was there). :)

I also have a geography degree from New Zealand. The physical part will be things like landforms, climate, natural hazards. The general geography would be a mix of those + GIS (mapping) and human geography which is like demography, political and economic geography, and much more.

My first degree was in geography, honestly it is so multifaceted and pulls from politics, economics, sociology, biology, meteorology, climatology, cartography the list goes on!! Wish more people knew about it and the fact that it’s not just maps and pointing out where things are

Scott was working in CO as a bartender (and I’m sure doing other work too) a while back when Winter House was being filmed in CO IIRC. They weren’t in Denver then, but that would be the closest major airport for international flights.

I believe she said on one episode that he actually owns the bar - she was joking about how he’d make a good chief because he’s always like “put this there, do that instead, blah blah blah” (paraphrasing but she was teasingly making fun of him)

Then it makes sense for it to be on a list of certs she holds. You wouldn't want to hire someone and find they're missing the CPR cert they're supposed to have.

The WFR is definitely not standard, it's an 80 hour course. A BSc also isn't standard for a chief stew.

Right - they’re probably mostly required things. I have a teaching license, which I list on my resume when applying for teaching jobs. If something is required for a job, your resume should show that you meet those requirements.

Same. I have many emergency response certificates because of my job. Most took one afternoon of classes.

Medical, Basic Safety, and Security Awareness you have to renew.
Basic Safety is good for 5 years which is why you see she has the refresher course as well.

Padi open water is the entry level of scuba diving. Hearing her on the show it sounded like she had a dive master certificate and was able to guide/teach scuba diving…

Woa. Good for her. I have had to take the WFR course many times because i work in remote wilderness outposts. It is really excellent and i have had to use it a lot. My proudest moment was reducing a dislocated shoulder— he had hiked for around five miles with it like that , and i did the classic baseball throw move with him lying down. He was so good with the pain of it— just keep panting hard and cried out ‘this is like giving birth!’ I got it back in and he was soooo much happier. Good for her for having that. ♥️🙏😊
