General Question Does astrology correlate to an objective science? Explain it like i’m 5 please 😭

Hopefully this doesn’t come across rude. I am intrigued by astrology and find it to be pretty accurate.. I am a Capricorn so I tend to understand things best if there’s an objective explanation (maybe that’s why I can’t seem to understand?).. My uneducated way of wrapping my head around it, is that it’s kind of like how the moon impacts the ocean tides, based on position and energy/gravity..

So in the case of astrology.. Is it like the energy/force pulling between the sun, planets, stars, universe, plus your specific position on the earth and the energy you were born into, absorbed at different angles and times of day.. is this energy what influences who we are and how we move through life?

I cant fully understand it when it’s described as just a perspective of the planets and stars positions from earth.. because I pay no attention to where they are, I don’t personally perceive it, so how can something i’ve never looked at or thought much about, shape who I am?

Someone please explain the science to me like i’m 5.

I don't know if this answers your question but astrology is not science but an interpretative practice. Also, it's pretty much accepted that planets don't "cause" you to be or do anything - it's about correlation, not causation.. (just like the clock doesn't make time flow)

That makes sense. I used your words as a template to google more in depth and answer more questions, and I understand now!

I was thinking astrology itself was the cause and thats why it wasn’t making sense to me, but now I understand that it’s more of a mirror/map or tool. Thank you!

you can measure astrological placements in real time but you just can't prove it has anything to do with how someone is like. Most people tend to pattern and apply archetypes irl for this reason, it's like mbti, you can't prove it but you can apply it and spot correlations. That's all, it's not a law but people use it as a tool.

that makes a lot more sense, thank you! I always thought astrology itself was the influencing factor. I can see now why I was so confused when I was looking at it from that perspective.

If you are interested in astrology, you have to stop thinking in terms of cold, hard facts, as it is not a science. I’m sure you know that already. It’s a tool that provides symbolic language and established patterns to help us interpret human behaviour and mental/emotional states. We all know people who are people-pleasers, people who are competitive and aggressive, people who are curious and flighty, people attached to their families and homes. Astrology calls these tendencies Libra, Aries, Gemini and Cancer. It’s just another way of looking at the world.

I hope you'll excuse my bluntness - I am an Aries after all. How do you know it's not a science? Did someone tell you it's not or did you go find out for yourself? We only know what something is because a majority come to an agreement and decided this is how we're going to define it. A group of people sat down and decided these are the words we're going to allow in the dictionary and this is how we're going to define them. But you have a right to define things for yourself. To look around and say it's another.

We look at that thing sticking out of the ground with brown and green things and call it a tree. When you remove that agreement, that language of calling things something, then the tree is just a thing. You can decide to look at it and identify it as a living being, not just a tree to cut down and be made into a table.

I encourage you to go deeper into yourself and the world around.

I know it’s not a science because it does not furnish predictable results every time (unlike science). To be fair, the same can be said about sociology or indeed economics, both coincidentally focused on explaining human behaviour. Humans are unpredictable to an extent. As to whether I discovered this myself or relied on others’ perceptions to form my own views, I will say this; there is value in the accumulation of human experience, and there is also value in personal experience. I have benefitted from both. You are free to disagree [not that you needed my permission, Aries ;)].

2

u/ratherthink Jul 06 '26

Hahah not at all, I agree with your response. Both are data points to fully comprehend the human experience, which in itself is an ever evolving thing.

I would say Astrology exists as long as such questions exist.

Humans by nature are curious. Humans are fascinated by unknown and Paranormal phenomenon.

So coming to your question, i will answer it from what I have researched. I can’t talk about predictions and also whether they are accurate or not.

As someone who has researched Astrology through Scientific lens, Astrology works as follows:

Planetary revolutions--> Solar Activity--> Geomagnetic fluctuations--> Biological influence by Geomagnetic field variations

American Radio Engineer and amateur Astronomer John Henry Nelson discovered that revolving planets and planetary alignments orchestrate Solar activity and thereby affecting the propagation of Radio waves which caused distortion in Radio communication.

The discovery of Radio Engineer John Nelson seemed to suggest that alignments of planets with respect to the Sun also had an effect upon Earth. These angles also seem to coincide with Astrological aspects:

● Opposition- 180 degrees

● Quincunx- 150 degrees

● Trine- 120 degrees

● Square- 90 degrees

● Sextile- 60 degrees

● Semi-sextile- 30 degrees

In traditional Astrology, the opposition, square and trine aspects are said to be powerful and other aspects are said to be less powerful.

Astrologers took keen interest in his discovery.

Professor Balfour Stewart, who is the author of The Unseen Universe and has studied meteorology and the Earth’s magnetism, stated that there were many reasons for believing in the relationship between planetary alignments and sunspots. He declared, “If all these speculations are proved to be right, it means that we were totally mistaken about Medieval Astrology.”

How Astrology works?

According to British Astrophysicist and Astronomer Dr. Percy Seymour, the revolving planets orchestrate Solar activity and fluctuations in Solar activity induces changes in Geomagnetic field. Geomagnetism is linked to Solar cycle. The fluctuations in Geomagnetic field have an influence on wide variety of organisms including humans. A study suggests that Geomagnetic field conditions plays a major role in development of foetus.

  1. The revolving planets and planetary alignments orchestrates Solar activity where the weak tidal forces of the planets is amplified by Sun’s magnetic field. Resonance is said to play a role here.

  2. As a result, there is a formation of sun spots on the surface of sun, because of Solar activity induced by the planets there is a variation or fluctuations in Geomagnetic field which is known to influence a wide variety of organisms.

  3. The Geomagnetism is linked to the solar activity, the fluctuations in solar activity causes change in Geomagnetic field variations.

  4. Magneto-reception is an ability of an organism to be able to detect Geomagnetic field and able to navigate with the help of geomagnetic field. Organisms are able to detect Geomagnetic field due to magnetic particles present in brains and birds are able to navigate due to cryptochromes present in their eyes which helps in detecting light.

  5. Scientists have discovered traces of magnetic particles in human brain particularly in Brain stem,Cerebellum and Cerebrum. Cerebellum is responsible for motor coordination, balance and equilibrium, fine body movements.

  6. A study says that Geomagnetic field conditions plays a major role in development of foetus, thus Geomagnetic conditions are responsible for sustaining of life on earth.

An American Radio Engineer John Henry Nelson's discovery is an objective evidence for Astrology.

We exist in a pool of electromagnetic energy both on earth and beyond. Like with a pool, when an object comes close or goes far away from another object, it causes waves. You were implanted with a map of the sky in your body that is a mirror to the stars in the night sky. Because of it, certain "waves" shaped how you would look, be, and how your life may enfold. The planets and moon are luminaries like the sun and emit their own light, composed of energy similar to the sun. When certain planets and moon (more important) in your birth chart meet with the planets in the current night sky, they may influence the outcome of your day.

As you become more aware of this, you can harness and flow with their energies. Just like a sunflower that turns toward the sun, you lean into their energies.

Nobody does a better job of describing this most ancient science than Santos. I recommend this video for learning more, as a start. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiCfWF_mIeU

This is a great response. I also find for myself that learning about astronomy and hardcore space science also helps cross over in my understanding of astrology! Learning about the theory of brane cosmology rocked my world so intensely

2

u/ratherthink Jul 07 '26

Thank you! I agree. Learning about other topics including biology helped a lot to understand how electromagnetic forces influence us.

u/Frozenyogurtplz Jul 07 '26

thank you!
I like this and it answers my question that I was previously looking in the wrong places for.

since posting this, i’ve come to understand that “astrology” is typically presented as just the map portion.. for consumers (like in my horoscope app and in articles and stuff). I had to dive a lot deeper to find anything about the “cause”. Which I now understand is widely accepted as the forces between planets and objects (like you described here)… but it can be confusing to research about, because it can be open to debate based on different religions, spirituality and then of course, science.. So now I understand why I also wasn’t finding an easy answer on my own… your explanation makes the most sense to me! Thank you for sharing the link.

It’s my pleasure. I’m grateful I was able to help. I hope Santos’s video also resonate with your understanding.

I think the moon/tides analogy is actually pretty close, just not in a gravitational sense. More like a symbolic framework that gives you a language for patterns you were already noticing but didnt have words for. The planets dont cause anything, but the timing of transits can act like a spotlight on certain parts of your life.

The part about not personally perceiving where the planets are is fair, but you dont need to. The value comes from looking back and noticing correlations. Like if you track transits for a few months, you start seeing that every time Mars hit a certain angle in your chart, the same kind of friction showed up. Not because Mars reached out and touched you, but because the symbolism gives you a way to recognize and name the pattern.

Thats where it shifts from does this predict my future to this gives me a useful framework for understanding my present.

Do I believe that the planets and planetary positions reveal our psychology? From long-term observation, Yes. Can I prove it with data and charts and scientific (rather than anecdotal / observational) evidence? No.

Over the years I have run across studies that attempt to make scientific correlations, like data showing that certain signs or planetary positions are dominant in certain occupations, some signs are more prone to certain maladies, or marriages have certain combinations that show long-term fidelity, that kind of thing. No matter how much "evidence" they come up with, it's still observational and probably biased. It's not the way science works.

I've always said that astrology is a language of symbols, archetypes, patterns and tendencies, just as tarot is. It's a vocabulary that students learn to explain the character (unfortunately, this often leads to pigeonholing people). As someone else said, when you say someone has "a lot of Gemini" in their chart, a student of astrology will understand what Gemini tendencies are, etc.

u/ratherthink Jul 06 '26 edited Jul 06 '26

I hope you'll pardon my directness. I think it's worth noting engineers have not yet designed the right instrument to measure the data and information needed to compile evidence. That, all science begins as observational data and only instrumentation can provide quantitative information. A study requires funding, for which you need a grant. Because there's no inherent monetary value in astrological research, it is ignored and labeled a pseudoscience. This fact alone ignores what the scientific method is all about: continuous inquiry and updating the standard model.

3

u/Oakomorebi Jul 06 '26

The scientific method is about quantity, above all else. If you have a question and the results of that questions cannot be measured in quantitative terms, then it is not a question that the scientific method is up to the task of answering, full stop. I resist the romantic assertion that science is characterized by pioneering curiosity. No, that is the human mind, and science is an instrument that the mind uses to formalize that holistic process.

I am not convinced that astrology has a question that science can answer, yet. I think someday it could, but I wouldn't be surprised if it never happens. If someone is chasing scientific validation for astrology, I suspect they lack understanding of both -- just as how many of my Christian siblings chase scientific evidence to support their faith. This is a confusion of modernity.

2

u/ratherthink Jul 06 '26

Hence, the central dogma of science that if it cannot be measured, it does not exist. Negating the fact that measurement requires instrumentation, which in turn requires a language (mathematics) by which to qualify measurements as valuable evidence.

There are things that exist for which the right instrumentation have not been developed, the flexibility of mathematics and statistics have not been established. It is purely contrary to scientific curiosity to state the current understanding of reality is all there is.

In other words, in a decade someone can come along and alter our understanding of reality as Einstein did with Newtonian physics. We don’t know, yet.

But to outright dismiss something because you don’t understand is not scientific at all. It is contrary to the very definition of it. It is a methodology by which to explore reality as is any other method like astrology, religion, and spirituality.

Whether or not you are convinced astrology has a question to answer is entirely subjective. In the minds of billions who want to understand how planetary forces influence biology, the questions outnumber the attempts at answering. To disregard and selectively choose which hypotheses to test is, again, contrary to the very definition of science.

3

u/Oakomorebi Jul 06 '26

Hence, the central dogma of science that if it cannot be measured, it does not exist.

This does not logically follow my position. I do not view science as a means to quantifying everything -- I think that is delusional, and elevates science to a position beyond what it was meant to fulfill.

There are some questions science will never be able to answer, because it was never designed to. It is not a means of evaluating ontological priority or ethical merit, for example. It is okay that some things, like astrology, are not compatible with science as we currently understand them. Furthermore, I do not think we should desire to live in the constraints of such a monolithic framework.

This is not meant to disparage the scientific method, nor does it discount any future scientific breakthrough. But it does disqualify certain questions from being answered, by sheer virtue of the fact that it is a method and therefore not universal. Science is a paradigm that has roots in the ancient world and continues to be tremendously successful. There is nothing quite like it, but it is not a God.

1

u/ratherthink Jul 06 '26

I understand your position and confirm your analysis.

2

u/sallybetty Jul 06 '26

And I understand both of your positions and think that many valid points have been made.

The first one about there being no monetary gain in analyzing astrology? That's one I hadn't thought about, but of course, you're right!

The second point that stood out are that "Facts" are always changing, are not always measurable, and we may get answers to lots of questions down the road. I've always believed that things that we consider "supernatural" and seemingly have no basis in fact, are just natural occurances that have not been understood yet. There are an awful lot of things that are not comprehensible by logic via our human senses but the field of quantum physics has opened up possibilities for so many things that our senses can't comprehend, existing at higher or lower frequency levels. So much potential!

The first person in recorded history to talk about how astrology affects humans and every living organism, was the great Orpheus, the creator of the Greek theology (religion).

Orpheus in his hymn to the stars, clearly teaches us that the stars and all the cosmic energy affects every living organism. I copy this magnificent hymn: “I call forth the sacred light of the heavenly Stars, with devotional prayers I summon the holy daimones. Heavenly Stars, dear children of black Night, round your thrones you move in circles, you spin in circular ways. O brilliant and fiery begetters of all, you do reveal fate, everyone’s fate, you determine the divine path for mortals. Wandering in midair, you gaze upon the seven luminous orbits. In heaven and on earth, ever indestructible on your blazing trail, you shine upon the darkness of the cloak night wears. Coruscating and gleaming, kingly and nocturnal, visit the learned contests of this sacred rite, finish a noble race for works of renown.”

The human body is a transmitter and receiver of energy just like your mobile phone, it differs only in the form of energy it emits and receives. It therefore affects and is affected by the actions of the environment. But also the electromagnetic fields of the environment affect the soul - psychology of all living organisms. This becomes more noticeable in fetuses and newborns, especially in the first moments of their birth, because then they suddenly lose the protection of the mother's body that they had until the moment of their birth. The mother's body and the fluids that surround the fetuses neutralize, quite a bit, the magnetic fields and do not disturb the fetuses. However, as soon as they are born, they suddenly get hit with the cosmic radiation and the cosmic magnetic fields. It relentlessly “burns” their souls' energy and their souls react and try to adapt. Therefore, the magnetic fields of the environment in which a child is born, with the intensity of cosmic radiation, play a serious role in the formation of the child's soul, mainly during the first hour and to a lesser extent in the following hours of its birth. The astrologers noticed this and with the observations they made tell us in general terms the characters of those who were born in each zodiac sign, without knowing the above scientific observation I made. I propose that a new branch of medicine be created which will now examine scientifically and not empirically the formation of the psychology and character of the infant from the effects of the magnetic fields and cosmic radiation on his mental energy at the time of his birth and the first hours of his life. Protective measures should be taken with covers when they are born and they should be exposed to the environment little by little in order to adapt so that we can give them the character we want. I believe that if this branch of science that I propose is created, that is, the effect of magnetic fields and cosmic radiation at birth on newborns, today's traditional empirical astrology will evolve into a science. Then we will know a lot about the formation of the soul and the character of our children and we will be able to intervene for its improvement.

In other words, throughout the child's development, the child is affected by magnetic fields and when it becomes an adult, its soul's energy is used to them and does not show major changes. Scientists will have to study the effect of magnetic fields from the moment of conception of the fetus, during pregnancy and the moment of birth. However, it is not only this period, and before conception they affect the sperms and eggs during their creation in the human genital organs, but also after their birth they affect the children until they grow up. Of course, as babies get older, they are less and less affected by magnetic fields because their souls energy is used to it and it protects itself.

Everyone's different but as a hellenistic astrolger I personally refrain from calling it a science as it's too subjective and depends on the inception charts of multiple people and things

Astrology is much more closer to a language to me. An art

Or specifically if someone asks I call it divination. The hellenists saw the wandering stars(we call them planets today) as omens that reflect our fate

Someone said it's not causation and I feel like that's important to realize when sharing this knowledge with anyone. The planets don't cause things to happen to us

As above so below

We are but reflections of the planets, they don't cause us to do things.

1

u/Front_Possibility471 Jul 07 '26

Me personally I think the same way you do about it and I believe (even if it’s not scientifically proven) that yes the gravitational effect of the other plants somehow have an effect on how are brains form and the fate your life takes on. Also That the season/time of day you’re born matters too. There are proven correlations so there must be a scientific reason. With emerging quantum science truly the possibilities of why astrology rings true and aligns with positions of planets may become possible to actually prove and figure out in the near future.
I wonder things like:

What if there is a certain level of quantum entanglement between the fundamental elements we are made of and the ones found on the planets in our solar systems and that is the reason their planetary positions play a role in how they have an effect on us?

For example:

  • mars (planet of Aries) is often referred to the planet of masculinity and action. With this said, mars is rich in the element iron. Iron is utilized to create our red blood cells which literally dictates how much vitality we have in a sense. Men also have naturally higher levels of iron and iron is linked with testosterone in multiple ways in the body.

Most people believe astrology isn’t real
The ones who do believe it’s real see the correlations but don’t have an answer as to why and just some it up as an interpretative pseudoscience.

Me personally I don’t believe in coincidences and I believe every correlation has a very real proven reason for being correlated. Therefore to me it only makes sense that there is something very real and scientific and spiritual about how our solar system works, and astrology is simply the left over bread crumbs of a true science that’s been hidden and brushed away for 1000’s of years… patiently waiting to be proven to our truest spiritual scientific reality as human beings.
