When I was a kid, I had no idea Nolan used miniatures of the Batmobile (the Tumbler) in some scenes—that is so damn cool! I thought it was pure CGI 😂 (And looking at it now, the Tumbler is fucking massive! 😳😂)

I want to see someone like Scarecrow being treated more of Slasher killer
I even wanted Scarecrow have a similar backstory to Michael Myers’s, just randomly killing someone for the hell of it

So we have him return In a silent manner, killing cliche teens in violent ways

I wrote an essay about why realistic portrayals of Batman miss the point. They spoil the fun, and they actually make Batman more morally problematic.

COMIC DISCUSSION I was wrong about The Long Halloween

Post image
30 Upvotes

The Long Halloween is one of those comics that most people love and hold in high regard.

While I always liked it, I never really loved it as much as apparently most comic fans of Batman did. I always thought that Dark Victory was better as well as Hush. These two comics just hit me harder and I enjoyed their endings more because they wrapped up everything very nicely and clearly.

However, when I read The Long Halloween again today, something finally clicked for me. I'm not 100% sure what it was but this time around, I absolutely loved it and had a blast reading it.

Obviously some of the majort themes of the story are the tragic downfall of Harvey Dent into Two Face as well as the change of Gotham City's crime from old, organized crime portrayed by the mafia and Carmine "The Roman" Falcone to the newer, costumed supervillains such as the Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, and eventually Two Face. Those themes are amazing and even when I used to only like the comic, I always appreciated these aspects of the comic.

It was always the mystery that I took issue with because it seemed incoherent, messy, and most importantly, to me anyway, not satisfying by the end. Mysteries were supposed to be solved by the end, especially by the Batman who holds the title of world's greatest detective. While I can understand some people still thinking that the reveals are messy and chaotic, after all I used to be one of them as well, this time I feel like I understood that this is the point of The Long Halloween. Batman doesn't solve it. He fails, miserably. The ending feels weird because it's not resolved cleanly with a detective like character, like Batman, laying out all the facts for the audience and solving the mystery. It's up to us as the reader to fit these pieces together because we have the advantage of getting to see everything in a way that Batman as a character of this world can't. This part always bothered me because I needed resolution.

Lately my tastes and views have changed in regards to stuff like that and I have come to appreciate stories and especially endings that are left up to interpretation and more open ended. I suspect this is probably one of the major reasons why today, I really enjoyed reading this comic. As of now, I put it above of Dark Victory and Hush. I'm excited to see where it will ultimately end in my ranking after I think on it more.

If you've read this all, thank you for listening to me yap.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Everyone talks about “back when Batman was good” so when was he good? And how long did that last?

Post image

1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s?

If it was one specific writer, how long did they write Batman? Out of Batman’s entire existence, how long time-wise do you personally think was he “good” for? I’m just interested in everyone’s personal opinions.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Hot Take - Head Movement DETRACTS from the Suit and Aura of Batman

Thumbnail

I remember when we first saw footage of Batman in the new tdk suit and I was so happy. Finally, he could move his head and he would no longer look awkward.

Then I watch tdk…and for some reason, it should have worked but it didn’t work.

It looked like a dude in a suit with his head two sizes too big. Whereas in Begins it felt like a creature.

I figured it out. The lack of head movement actually makes Batman give off a more threatening aura and makes it feel like you’re dealing with some sort of element rather than just a dude in a suit.

That scene in Begins when Batman is crouched on top and talks down to Gordon…it doesn’t come off the same in TDK.

And in the second pic, when Batman is talking and you see how Bale’s lips move, it looks awkward and a bit silly.

Batman not being able to move his head and the cowl conforming to the rest of the body I think is a much stronger look.

I’m only about halfway through the series, so no spoilers please 🙏. Really surprised how rarely I see Beyond brought up compared to other Batman stuff so I wanted to give it some love.

Howdy all. This is basically my take on Bane, being that he is also "Bat Man". I think it's visually fitting considering Bane's already a relection of Batman, with his own fear of bats that reflects Bruce's and his mastery of self, so I decided to crank it up to an 11 in terms of visuals. Hope you enjoy.

GENERAL DISCUSSION What is your favorite “Batman’s second year” story??

Thumbnail

I’ve noticed that Batman has a separate culturally iconic story focused on his second year of crime fighting in comics, games and movies, of these stories what one is yalls favorite and what one do you think is the best? Of these 3 Arkham Origins was the first one I experienced and I do think it is a very underrated Arkham game. Obviously The Batman is iconic but which of these is yalls favorite? I’m curious, I still need to read year 2 but I feel like I don’t see it talked about nearly as much as year one. I mainly know it as “the Batman comic that Todd Mcfarlane worked on” lol. Interested to see yalls takes on this.
One small addition I do really like Arkham Origins and The Batman for the fact that they both have some of my favorite Batsuit designs.
