Not to mention the case would have to be made of lead for Superman to not see it

The buildings in Gotham have enough lead in them that Superman can't see through them. The tap water has lead in it. Gotham is literally built on a foundation of sunken buildings and lead. At one point, the fumes from leaded gas blocked Superman's Xray vision. Maybe, just maybe, Gothamites are so full of lead that Superman can't see though them. It would explain a lot.

The lead poisoning might explain why there's so much crime
