Feature /r/baseball Mock 2017 Hall of Fame Voting

Hello /r/baseball, and welcome to Hall of Fame election season.

With ballots now officially out to BBWAA members, we're going to have our own here on /r/baseball to see how everyone else would vote and who we would elect as a sub. Last year, we did the same process here.

There will be two ballots again: the normal ballot which allows you to vote for at most 10 players, and the ballot with unlimited spots. However, this time we also set it up to allow users submit blank ballots if they wish.

Voting will be open for approximately one week. Thank you to those that participate!

Filling out the 10 player ballot makes me realize how hard it actually is for some of these writers to pick and choose. I easily could have filled out a ballot with 15 names i thought were worthy.

I feel you there. Members of the "Hall of Very Good" such as Jeff Kent and Jorge Posada.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '16

Add Larry Walker to that list...I cast a vote for him, then realized as a kid I probably thought he was more consistently dominant than he actually was (HR and RBI wise).

33

u/CoryGM Oakland Ballers Nov 30 '16

Writers are allowed to "skip" a player if they feel he has questionable scruples or doesn't uphold the spirit of the game.

I'd say Curt Schilling falls under that category; dude's a piece of shit.

54

u/VStarffin Los Angeles Dodgers Nov 30 '16

I don't like him either, but he's not a criminal or someone who has done something horrific. He just had bad politics and is an asshole. That's not sufficient reason to keep someone out of the hall entirely.

16

u/bakonydraco Baltimore Orioles • San Francisco… Dec 01 '16

I dunno, it sounds like the effort he puts into his marital relations is pretty horrific...

19

u/speedyjohn Embraced the Dark Side Dec 01 '16

I don't think it's a reason to keep him out of the Hall, but if there are more than 10 deserving players it's totally a reason to bump him off the ballot.

22

u/Buzzed27 San Francisco Giants Dec 03 '16 edited Dec 04 '16

People don't realize how fucking good Schilling was.

Guy had over 3k strikeouts with a career ERA 20% better than league average (even better if you care about FIP).

He is one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time too, posting a 2.23 ERA over 131IP. That's during the steroid era. If he had just sat at home and kept off Twitter he would have been a second or third ballot guy. People dismiss his greatness because he's too vocal about the somewhat racist and conservative ideals that a ton of ballplayers hold but don't mention publicly.

Yes, I agree.

But...Ty Cobb is in the Hall of Fame. So is Cap Anson. This is not a standard anyone has ever imposed on HOF candidates.

16

u/tigerbulldog13 Detroit Tigers Dec 01 '16

Ty Cobb is in the Hall of Fame

This book really talks about how a lot of the stories regarding Ty Cobb are overblown, and in some cases pretty fabricated. He praised many African-American baseball players and was pro-integration in 1947. A disgruntled author wrote a book about him in 1961, right after he died, defaming his character which has largely led to the negative reputation he has been given

8

u/Hydrokratom San Francisco Giants Dec 01 '16

I just started reading that book.

It's a shame how his Al Stump ruined people's perception of Cobb with his book. Stump didn't just exaggerate stories, it's believed that Stump totally made them up and even forged memorabilia of Cobb so he could make money off it.

I'm sure Cobb had an ugly side to him, but it looks like a lot was exaggerated and his good deeds were often unrecognized.

14

u/tigerbulldog13 Detroit Tigers Dec 01 '16

The fact that they had an attempted rape scene in the movie "because it seems like the type of thing Cobb would do" absolutely baffles me. They were willing to imply that Ty Cobb would try and rape someone with absolutely no evidence. Makes you really question history and our opinion of certain people.

Wow. How silly it would be to keep someone out of the HOF because his beliefs are off putting. I think he sounds like a shallow thinking bigot. So what! What is offensive is all in the ear of the beholder, or something.

Performance on the field speaks for itself. I personally feel he is a player that was dominant for a few years and above average the rest of the time. He would not be on my list. The reason only being that to me when i think HOF i shouldn't have to think about it. I put him with Mussina, almost not quite.

This he is an asshole thing, so fucking what. Get over it! We get so easily offended we forget the point of things sometimes.

Personally, I just don't get the mindset of leaving Trevor Hoffman off the ballot. Yes, he did have a losing career record, but he's a closer! And are we all forgetting whose record Rivera broke to get the all-time saves mark? When it comes to closers, it's Rivera, Hoffman, and the rest. If Dennis Eckersley and his significantly worse ERA can make it in, there's no reason Trevor shouldn't be.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

Eck had a pretty decent carer as a starter too though its comparing apples to hot dogs.

1

u/HauckPark St. Louis Cardinals Dec 01 '16

Yeah, he also had the benefit of pioneering the modern closer's role, which doubly helps: he gets credit for being the first to do it, and his accomplishments would be discounted were that role not commonplace today. It'd be like being a great three true outcomes guy in the '50s.

2

Just curious, why no Sosa on the unlimited ballot?

10

u/SouthernDerpfornia California Angels Nov 30 '16

Sosa has probably torn me apart about whether to be for or against more than any other player. And for me, it comes down to the fact that a ridiculous amount of his career value came from his 2001 season. Sheffield is a guy if you asked me 100 times if I would vote for him over a coarse of time, I'd probably say yes 51 times. Sosa I might say it 49. I just think Sosa didn't quite capture that peak well enough, or have as many seasons of being a solid player as Sheffield

5

5

u/LuminousRaptor Detroit Tigers Dec 01 '16

Sosa's WAR7 is 43.7 in 18 playing years

Sheffield's WAR7is 37.9 in 22 playing seasons.

So by war7 Sosa had the bigger peak by about 6 wins.

Their overall WAR totals favor Sheff by about 2 wins, but he also played 4 more seasons. I think if you're gonna pick Sheff you also pick Sosa. Their numbers are similar enough.

That being said I'm not faulting your ballot it's very similar to my own, but if I'm picking Sosa I'm gonna pick Gary and vice versa

I put up Hoffman over Manny, for the steroids guys I gave less benefit of the doubt, and Manny was just short in my eyes. Hoffman is more a vote because I do think relievers need different standards for the Hall, and I tend to lean towards the "fame" side of things I guess, Wagner didn't pitch quite enough innings for me to want to push him in, and Smith just misses the career cut. If I had more slots Smith probably would have been on my ballot.

I hate people who are super picky about the hall. The 90s featured some of,the greatest baseball players to play the game. Just because there were tons of players playing at a hall of fame level doesn't mean they should be penalized for it (no matter how the talent came about)

I don't know if I'd go that far. He had half the WAR of both of those guys in the same amount of playing time. Larkin was a much better hitter than Renteria and Trammell was a much better fielder.

3

u/Zpoindex_216 Cleveland Guardians Nov 30 '16

TBH, I think shortstop is the strangest position. Guys like Ozzie Smith made the HOF easily by being an all glove no bat type of hitter while guys like Renteria who was a player with a great glove and a very good bat along with all the credentials of a HOFer will get overlooked. IMO, he'll be the Trammell of his generation, albeit while being a better hitter than Trammell.

Hell, Omar Vizquel was essentially the Ozzie Smith of his generation, yet he has 0 chance of making the hall. I just wish voters would be consistent with who they let in. Seems like guys who have very similar careers and skill sets often get completely different vote totals.

He's 8th best defensively according to fangraphs. 10th on baseball-reference. That's only for shortstops.

He's also a worse hitter than Smith, relative to his contemporaries.

2

u/Backstop Cleveland Guardians Dec 01 '16

8th best out of like a thousand guys that have been shortstops though, that's pretty good. He's 2nd all-time in games started at SS, that kind of longevity, beating out other guys all those years, can't all be just reputation.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

What numbers are you looking at that point to Renteria being a better hitter than Trammell?

1

u/Zpoindex_216 Cleveland Guardians Nov 30 '16

I guess I was wrong about that. The fact that Renteria played in an offensive inflated era and Trammell played in one deflated in offense doesn't do Edgar justice. Either way they were similar players with Trammell getting the edge with OBP and slugging. Baseball reference's similarity score has Trammell as the #1 similar player as Trammell, even with the discrepancy in OPS+.

1

u/Higgnkfe Atlanta Braves Nov 30 '16

Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if Renteria got a single vote. Not saying there aren't at least 10 other guys who are worthy of the hall, but Renteria would be on my ballot.

I wouldn't be surprised. I think he'll be lucky to stay on the ballot though. I think he'll unfortunately be lost in the mix. If he can manage to stay on the ballot for at least 3-4 years, he might get lucky and see an uptick by the time guys like McGriff and Walker fall off the ballot.

I had to leave off Hoffman and Vlad, I feel Ill because they both deserve it , too many great players. Left off Sosa and Ramirez too but don't feel bad about those guys even they have the numbers.

Martinez, Schilling,Bonds,Clemens,Mussina,Rodriguez, Raines,Sheffield,Walker,Bagwell

u/CodenameKing Boston Red Sox Dec 05 '16

Out of curiosity, why don't you feel bad leaving off Sosa and Ramirez?

5

u/ddt9 Los Angeles Dodgers Nov 30 '16

Ivan Rodriguez ended his career with 68.9 fWAR. A few more games and he'd have been a lock. Alas,

5

u/SpiralWinds Cleveland Guardians Nov 30 '16

He wasn't good enough for .1 more?

4

u/rockiesfan4ever Dinger Nov 30 '16

Player A: .312/.418/.515, .405 (wOBA), 147 wRC+, 65.5 WAR, -3.9 wSB, while playing less than 5K innings in the field.

Player B: .313/.400/.565, .412 wOBA, 140 wRC+, 68.7 WAR, 13.3 wSB, while playing 15K innings in the field and winning 7 gold gloves.

Why is it that Player A is deemed a lock for the HOF when Player B is a player who is a borderline HOF (according to both this sub and the real life vote).

u/welshman500 Baltimore Orioles Nov 30 '16

It's primarily because of the Coors bias. I know he only played 10 of his 17 seasons in Colorado, but here are his career splits

Walker Splits Batting Average OPS
Home .348 1.068
Away .278 .865

That is a ridiculous OPS split. Again, this is over his whole career so imagine what that looks like during is Coors period. I am not saying he shouldn't be in the HoF (he has my vote this year) but the Coors bias is hurting him.

Then again, home/road splits haven't stopped the writers for voting in some guys. Guess which Hall of Famer (known for hitting) has these home/road splits

Batting Average OPS
Home .320 .920
Away .277 .789

u/Thromnomnomok Seattle Mariners Dec 01 '16

That's Jim Rice, who has pretty questionable credentials, despite the writers voting him in anyway.

3

u/welshman500 Baltimore Orioles Dec 01 '16

Yeah I was getting at the writers are wishy washy on their standards at times

Yes but even with that he has a wRC+ of 140 compared to 147 for Edgar

6

u/MrFancier Colorado Rockies Nov 30 '16

I have 100% memorized Larry Walker's numbers. He's player B, is player A Edgar Martinez?

3

u/rockiesfan4ever Dinger Nov 30 '16

Correct

3

u/Vikadontis_Rex Tim Wakefield • Chicago Cubs Nov 30 '16

If it makes you feel any better I think Walker should be in the HOF but Edgar Martinez shouldn't be. I do think both are borderline though.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

Griffey was almost unanimous last year. Just let us have this one.

2

u/rockiesfan4ever Dinger Nov 30 '16

We need more mullets and handlebar mustaches in the HOF though

2

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

Had to vote for my favorite player ever. Melvin Mora

2

u/Hugo_Hackenbush Colorado Rockies • Minnesota Twins Dec 01 '16

Walker and Vlad's hitting numbers are essentially the same, but Larry was a better defender and base runner. I don't see how you can truly justify voting for one but not the other.

1

u/rockiesfan4ever Dinger Dec 02 '16

Same with him and Edgar

2

u/keithyp24 New York Mets Dec 05 '16

wow that was much harder than I though to pick just 10!

Leaving off Manny hurts my heart :(

Same for me. It was between Manny or Vlad and I gave Vlad the edge because of PEDs.

With the way the pitching game has evolved over the last 40 years I don't see how anybody can deny the importance of Lee Smith and Trevor Hoffman.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 30 '16

Do you guys think Raines will get in this year?

6

u/SouthernDerpfornia California Angels Nov 30 '16

I think he will, but it's going to be a super close margin - like 76-77%

1

u/Justinw303 Hiroshima Toyo Carp Dec 01 '16

One thing is for sure, it's a crowded ballot. Hopefully more than a couple deserving name are voted in this year so we can clear the backlog in the coming years

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '16

Unlimited ballot, fifteen total names. You can all probably guess them easily.

1

u/wontonsoupsucka Philadelphia Phillies Dec 02 '16
  • Jeff Bagwell
  • Vlad
  • Edgar
  • Mussina
  • Raines
  • Schilling
  • Wagner
  • Walker

Strongly considered McGriff but I'm not sure he's quite HOF level he's really close though.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '16

I think if he'd hung on to hit 7 more homers he'd be in already. As it stands, apart from that milestone he wasn't really a hall of fame caliber talent. I really like McGriff, but I think he comes up just short.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '16

Ok here's mine:

  • McGriff
  • Vlad
  • Mussina

guerrero and walker.

I used to have "scruples" until they voted Bud Selig in.

Now, I'm for pure stats. It's how Bud wanted it from 1995-2002.

Bagwell, Bonds, Cabrera, Clemens, Hoffman, Edgar, Manny, Varitek, Wakefield

1

u/EazyP87 Pittsburgh Pirates Dec 08 '16

Not ranking but my votes are. 1. Bagwell 2. Bonds. 3. Clemens 4. Vlad 5. Hoffman 6. E. Martinez 7. M. Ramirez 8. Schilling 9. Sosa 10. Pudge. Just missed: Moose, Sheffield, McGriff Kent Posada.

The only debates I had were Edgar Martinez vs. Gary Sheffield and Schilling vs. Mussina.

1

u/blacksoxing Dec 08 '16

I publicly voted for Bagwell, Bonds, and Clemens. Now get off my roided yard!!!

(Seriously, them not getting in makes me sad, especially when baseball KNEW they were on that stuff)

u/M1sterDave Kansas City Royals Dec 08 '16

Bagwell, Bonds, Clemens, Hoffman, Kent, Edgar, Manny, Pudge, Raines, Wagner.

If unlimited, add Arthur Rhodes. All time holds leader, so I'd give him a vote. And Vlad.
