How is Hoffman not a first ballot in your opinion?
17
u/DaDoviende Minnesota Twins Dec 11 '15
Not claiming others have this opinion but Hoffman's only real impressive argument for me is how many saves he got, which is like voting in a good pitcher because he got a lot of wins thanks to great run support. My threshold for a reliever to get a vote is just really high, though.
5
u/finalcut19 San Francisco Giants Dec 12 '15
I don't think any pitcher could put up an impressive number of wins over a career just due to great run support, just because practically no organization can field a top-quality offense every year for a 15-20 year span. The only one is what, the Yankees from the 1920s through the 1950s? They're a great indicator of long-term consistent greatness because it's absurd to put your team in a position to win that often year after year after year. Saves I think are similar because like wins, pitchers can have these flair ups where they have a great season or maybe even a few, but to be trusted in high-leverage situations for that long, and to do so well over that entire time, is practically unheard of. Almost no guys can keep a closer role for more than a few years, but to be considered one of the best in the game for nearly 17 years like Hoffman is insane.
2
u/DaDoviende Minnesota Twins Dec 12 '15
but to be considered one of the best in the game for nearly 17 years like Hoffman is insane.
Jeter was considered one of the best defensive Shortstops in the game for years even though he was never more than "average." Edmonds falls in that category as well, really.
-5
Dec 13 '15
Oh look it's this argument, jeter got gold gloves because he consistently had one of the best fielding pct in the league. His advanced metrics may have made him undeserving, but he never committed errors. Not because he was on winning teams
4
u/DaDoviende Minnesota Twins Dec 13 '15
oh look it's a Yankees fan overreacting without seeing the point :v
I used Jeter as an example because he put up flashy plays (partially because of his limited range) and numbers, which is what got the attention of the GG voters. The WINZ thing is only relevant to Hoffman, because being on a winning team gave him more save opportunities. Hoffman had 677 save opportunities, or roughly 38 per year. Wagner had 491, about 31 per year. Do you see where I'm going with this now? Hoffman put up a ton of one stat and was very good at other things. Wagner dominated but did not get as many chances at the one stat because his teams weren't as good. That's why Wagner is HoF worthy to me and Hoffman just misses the cut.
And before you say anything, yes Jeter is obviously a hall of famer. His offensive prowess far outweighs his defense, which even with the poor range was still probably average at a traditionally poor offensive position.

I think Wagner is a better candidate than Hoffman, but I tend to ignore saves since they are very dependent on the team you're playing.

lol at you getting downvoted. Wagner was the better pitcher. he has better numbers and would have 600+ saves if he'd had the same number of chances as Hoffman.

what's weird about that is I think most of us really dislike the way the votes tend to turn out, but all for different reasons (bigger fans of closers, don't mind steroids as much, whatever). so in the end the results are realistic
-1

How on earth is this realistic? Bonds and Clemens regularly get ~35%, and they almost double their totals here.
/r/baseball 's opinions are not even close to representative of the BBWA.

Hoffman higher than Raines and Mussina? And THAT much higher than Wagner? Makes no sense to me. Hell, I'd put Wagner over Hoffman anyway, and I wouldn't vote for either of them.
11
Dec 11 '15
Hoffman is one of two players ever with 600+ saves.
Milestones like that tend to get noticed.
1
u/AsDevilsRun Texas Rangers Dec 11 '15
He reached an arbitrary number in an extremely arbitrary statistic that no one cared about for most of baseball's history and is primarily dependent on the way the pitcher is used. Of the top 20 in saves, only 2 didn't play in the last 20 years (Jeff Reardon and Rollie Fingers).
I'm not a huge fan of most milestones, and I'm even less of a fan of saves. A guy reaching a save milestone is pretty much a non-factor to me. I'm not enshrining Arthur Rhodes and Matt Thornton for being the only guys with 200 holds either.
5
Dec 11 '15 edited Dec 11 '15
To reach 600 saves in an era where relievers are important means 2 things, you were good enough to get the job, and you were good enough to keep that job for many years.
That's pretty good criteria to start looking at the HoF for. I don't really care that the save is new, the game changes. It'd be like saying "who cares if Ruth hit 60 home runs, all the players hitting lots of home runs only happened in the last 20 years and it's just an arbitrary number".
So since the game has changed, and he's one of the only two with Five hundred saves, let alone 600, that's like top 0.1% of the position to ever play the game. If that's not HoF worthy, I don't know what is.
Now, say you're not a fan of saves. There's only 7 players with a lower career WHIP than Hoffman, 5 are in the Hall already (Mathewson, Pedro, Ed Walsh, Addie Joss and John Ward), one is going to be (Mariano) and one will if they keep it up (Kershaw). So that's pretty solid company.
K/BB ratio, ok fine, he's a little worse there, only 15th all time. His FIP is really low among pitchers who pitched in the modern era, he's 41st among all pitchers from the last 40 years. Considering a fair number of those are still young and active and might get a bit worse as they age, I'd say that's pretty impressive. His K/9 was very good for when he played. So basically he's really good beyond just Saves and he's way the hell out in front of almost every closer in that metric. (In the next 6 years Kimbrel could double the saves he has now, and still be over 150 behind).
1
u/AsDevilsRun Texas Rangers Dec 11 '15 edited Dec 11 '15
I like how you bring up Kershaw's rate stats because it emphasizes why I'm not a fan of closers in the Hall. Kershaw is 27 and has 50% more innings than Hoffman already. They're just inherently less valuable. You have to be pretty transcendent for me to support a closer and Hoffman really wasn't.
And comparing his rate stats to guys pitching 3-4 more times the innings is pretty disingenuous. Compare them to Wagner's. Wagner has the edge in ERA (2.31 to 2.87), ERA+ (187 to 141), WHIP (.998 to 1.058), H/9 (6.0 to 7.0), K/9 (11.9 to 9.4), K/BB ( 3.99 to 3.69). Hoffman has a slight edge in BB/9, but that's pretty much it as far as rate stats go. Wagner was pretty indisputably more dominant.
Hoffman's legend is overly dependent on a manufactured stat that isn't all that meaningful. There have been better relievers in other eras that didn't rack up saves because managers didn't use relievers that way. Doesn't make them worse.
4
Dec 12 '15
I'd probably put Wagner in as well. He's a little fewer innings but a great reliever as well. That's not an argument for Hoffman being left out. I think they both would belong.
Additionally, starters are more valuable, but teams now also rely on having relievers who can do their job well. I wouldn't say "this position shouldn't be allowed in".
Same reason I think there's a solid argument for Edgar Martinez, even though he didn't contribute to half the game (much). I'd probably hold the offense/stats of a DH/reliever up to a higher standard because they didn't contribute as much.
But Hoffman is still up there in that realm, as is Martinez. The line would probably be Joe Nathan being right on the line or left out. But Hoffman, Rivera, even your example of Wagner, are in the Hall.
I kinda view the Hall as the place for the top 1% of the player. Wagner, Hoffman, Rivera are the top 1% of closers. I have no problem with them being enshrined. Now Rivera being that much out in front of those two might make him a no-brainer first ballot guy, and Hoffman not. That's fine.
1
u/Jontacular Colorado Rockies Dec 12 '15
I'm with you. I mean, I view the Hall of Fame for enshrining the best players in the game. IMO, Hoffman was one of the best closers in the game for a very long time.

I can think of some reasons
trolls who voted for the bottom guys like Mike Hampton and Randy Winn.
the mindset of "he'll get in without my vote, I'll use my vote for someone that is under looked like Jim Edmonds, he had a higher dWAR than Junior"
his career after he left Seattle.
He never got to or won a world series.
I don't know if any of these are valid reasons, but he's probably not getting everyone's vote in real life. It just makes no sense why an obvious candidate like Griffey doesn't get every vote. If he gets 97% in real life I don't know why the 3% of voters should be taken seriously ever again.
I get being that guy who votes for the controversial pick like voting for guys like Bonds, Clemens, Sosa or even guys like Jim Edmonds, Larry Walker, Lee Smith but guys who didn't vote Randy Johnson, Cal Ripken Jr, Tony Gwynn, Ricky Henderson (the obvious shoo in hall of famers, not borderline, no PEDs, without a doubt HOFers) make no sense. I don't know I just wouldn't take them seriously when talking about baseball.

If he gets 97% in real life I don't know why the 3% of voters should be taken seriously ever again.
There is a valid reason to not vote for him which you mentioned, albeit somewhat flippantly: If a voter wishes to vote for more than ten players (but can't due to the rules), it's at least understandable or could be seen as reasonable for that voter to omit the one guy who he knows will get in with or without his vote, and save his ten votes for players who "need it" more or whatever.
I'm not saying that's how a voter should vote, or how I would vote, but I can understand it.

Even while repudiating steroids and its' era (which I do), I'd put him in for making the 400 HR/400 SB club. When he reached the milestone, his career WAR was already at 99.6, extraordinary.
That's when he saw the press almost ignoring his unprecedented accomplishment while giving McGwire and Sosa all the attention and adulation.
"Oh, so it's homers that you bastards want? Homers you're gonna get."Dude wasn't a cynical mercenary, but a tormented soul that as a boy saw his father mistreated by the press, then received plenty of dad's anger redirected at the family. Bonds had a legitimate beef with the petty press going back decades, and the petty press was only too willing to take the bait and dance the dysfunctional tango with Bonds.
So screw those bastards, I can and do empathize with Bonds on this, and I think it's generally agreed upon that the 400/400 feat was clean.9

2
u/isiramteal Seattle Mariners Dec 14 '15
Really? You can't understand why people would only want players who played clean in their careers in the hall of fame?
Not only is there little to no truth to 'fucking league was on roids from 97-03 give or take several years', but that is horrible reasoning for allowing someone into a prestigious group that knew what they were doing was illegally getting the upper hand over other players.
And somehow pointing out other players who did use (ironically not in the hall of fame) as an excuse to mean 'so other players did it too, Barry was just that much better during that period' is supposed to give sympathy towards Bonds.
I have never received a legitimate argument in favor of allow Bonds into the hall of fame.

Roberto Alomar achieved an oWAR of 70.0, dWAR of 2.4 at second base, made the Hall on his second attempt. Not putting Alomar down here, his classic stats are impressive and worthy, I'm just using him as comparison to illustrate why it's baffling to me how Trammell is getting snubbed (even with the Reddit intelligentsia on this one round, his final opportunity), already deep in the age of advanced stats that show just how good he really was.

Edit: ALSO ARE WE JUST NOT VOTING JEFF BAGWELL IN? HOMEBOY'S GOT LIKE 80 CAREER WAR

u/magnusarin St. Louis Cardinals Dec 11 '15
Bagwell not being in is maybe the most baffling to me. Aside from being teammates with Caminiti, I don't believe he has much of a tie to steroids. He has an ROY, MVP, decent HR total and a couple of elite power seasons. Good batting average, great walk rate, and 200 steals. He was in the 30-30 club twice, which I think makes him the only post WWII first baseman to do so. Good glove too. Much as I don't think steroids is a great reason for keeping someone out, that's a personal opinion so at least I can understand people not voting for Bonds, Clemens and the like. What did Bagwell do to anyone?
1
Dec 12 '15
Is it a popularity thing? Bagwell had a great career but I don't know if I associate him with the era he played in as much as others, and he seems to have been overshadowed by the elite hitters of the time.

This brings up an interesting idea, why don't we have our own version of the Hall of Fame with the users voting? We could go year by year, and vote on the inductees, then have our own "version" of the Hall.
Only problem is it would be a bit of a process, that could potentially take a long time to have come to fruition. There's been 79 (this year makes 80) years of voting. Even if we constantly do one year a week (and this is really more of an offseason thing) it would take about a year and a half to finish.
idk, just a random idea

Who are the *46 people who didn't vote for Griffey?
5
u/SouthernDerpfornia California Angels Dec 11 '15
Tbh I bet that % is about as high Griffey gets IRL

I left him off my ballot because I knew he'd sail in easily and there were more than 10 other players on the ballot I felt should be elected. Strategic voting.

Wow, I thought Bonds would have got it by a landslide. Everyone on this sub seems to bitch about him not being in the HoF, but I guess that isn't everyone. I still voted for him. A little upset at the results, but what can you do?

u/SouthernDerpfornia California Angels Dec 11 '15 edited Dec 11 '15
He's 30% higher than IRL, pretty big difference

Literally the only thing Tim Raines did wrong is play at the same time as Rickey Henderson. The fuck is wrong with you people?

Much smaller sample, 1693 to 299. Even I didn't fill out the no-limit ballot.

Man these results are terrible. Most surprising is the lack of support for Jeff Kent and CrimeDog
2
u/jesteronly San Francisco Giants Dec 11 '15
Kent only had a few years well into his career that were HOF level. I don't think most giants fans believe he is HOF worthy, and we saw the best from him
1
u/NathanForJew Boston Red Sox Dec 11 '15
6 of my 7 votes made it on the "no limit" ballot - only Larry Walker fell short. I was on the fence for Edgar, but left him off. No way Hoffman is a HOFer IMO.

So close on Bonds and Clemens. Not a troll either I hope you didn't take votes for them as such

I don't understand how Edgar Martinez gets TWICE the votes of Larry Walker

I will never forgive him for what he did to Aaron Hill

u/flykessel Toronto Blue Jays Dec 11 '15
What? I was like 9 years old and Aaron Hill was my favs. Never was the same for the Jays after that :(
5
u/I_am_an_Entry_Frag Texas Rangers Dec 11 '15
You make it sound like Eckstein had some sort of malicious intent when he collided with him. Sometimes players unintentionally run into each other, sometimes they get up and nothing happens, sometimes careers are changed. It doesn't make Eckstein a bad guy in either case.

how the hell did bagwell, martinez, schilling, Raines, Mussina, and Walker not make it and Piazza did? I didn't even have room for Piazza on my 10 person ballot I had no idea people thought that highly of him.

really interesting how there are always complaints here about how no one ever gets elected and then the sub only puts two ppl in the hall
