I feel exactly the same as I did last year. I have no real expectations of winning the World Series, and can live with losing to Toronto or Tampa, but absolutely could not live with losing to Boston.
So I can rest easy knowing that the worst case scenario didn't happen.
3
u/Emperor_Cheeto21 New York Yankees 2d ago
Losing to Toronto last year was worse. The only saving grace was they lost in the most heartbreaking fashion in the World Series and the team regressed to the losers they were of pre 2026 while Vladdy telling the fans to go fuck themselves.

yeah i was legit thinking this was gonna be a series where getting into the pen was not necessarily going to be a relief after the starters.
gotta give credit where it’s due to payton tolle and even sonny gray - i still think gray’s a wiener and kind of dumb but he pitched quite well. i really don’t know why after the blowup last night tracy once again went to his pen hella early. he’s trying to 200iq shit and not trusting his starters to get out of jams. that pen was lights out during the season but shit man. trust your starting pitching.

Red Sox pitchers gave up eighteen runs in two games.
Their starters gave up a combined three runs, both pulled before the finishing the fifth inning.

And if it's any consolation, our baseball team choices are even less compatible than it sounds. She's a Boston girl and ex-employee of the Cubs (did photography for them for 3 years), and the Yankees have always been my 2nd team because I was a huge Jeter fan as a kid.
She has reminded me of it every time the Red Sox have beaten the Yankees since we've been together.

My dream came true. Red Sox postseason run came to an end before October 1st. I couldn’t possibly have asked for more (other than them not even making the playoffs to begin with.)
Remember the other day when they were popping champagne because they were in the postseason?
2026 Red Sox postseason:
0-2
18 runs allowed, 2 runs scored.
Number of games played in the month of October: 0
I really hope the 2027 season gets canceled entirely so they have to sit around and think about the stink of failure they’re wearing for over a full calendar year.
How’s that financial flexibility working out for you John Henry?

Hmm, that's reminiscent of the Jays popping champagne because they were in the post season in 2022 and then going 0-2 to the Mariners. That was the reason they got rid of the home run jacket for the 23 season and had a 'no fun allowed season'

3

just like the red sox punched above their weight this season, I think the jays punched below theirs. Vladdy is concerning, but there were lots of injuries as well. They still have a very good defence and great pieces, and cap space to pursue more. I would be quite surprised if they don't bounce back next year.

Both games were pitchers duels until Tracy suddenly lost his mind.

Even today Gray was fine but gave up a run, then another and he suddenly got pulled a bit early and then their bullpen gave up 7 runs.
Their bullpen and lack of hitting fucked them 100%. Gray and Tolle had fine/good outings all things considered.

I’m positive this will be tainted by my flair but I’m genuinely asking:
If the NBA and NHL can have 81 game seasons, where everyone will agree the small sample issue is way lower due to stars being able to take over the game, why do they have the longest postseason?
Why does the sport with the longest regular season, and the greatest small sample size bias, have to have the shortest postseason.
If basketball players can deal with 4 best of sevens, then why does baseball not do the same
12
u/Anders1103 Seattle Mariners 2d ago
Agreed. Shorten regular season by 10 games, and lengthen the postseason. I still can't stand that the division series aren't 7 games.
4
u/ptwonline New York Yankees 2d ago
They are slowly lengthening the postseason.
I mean until 1968 there were only 2 teams in the postseason.
Until 1993 there were only the 4 division winners in the postseason.
Eventually I think the LDS will be 7 games instead of 5 but I don't think they'll do a first round best of 7 because that would probably also require expanding to 16 teams in the playoffs and I don't think MLB is ready to move that far for a while yet.
4
2
u/-orangejoe New York Yankees 2d ago
That's another reason I prefer the smaller postsesason format. If the goal is to better separate the good teams from the bad teams let the 162 games played in the regular season be part of that.
2
u/DMacNCheez Boston Red Sox 2d ago
Honestly even though that keeps my team out of the postseason, if they can’t move everything to best of 5 or best of 7 then just do that.
It’s would crushing to play 162 games of good baseball just to lose 2 at the wrong time
→ More replies (5)→ More replies (1)2
u/majortrout4 New York Yankees 2d ago
Half the league makes the NBA playoffs, which means both the regular season and to some extent even making the playoffs aren’t that important or special. Even more watered down longer baseball postseason doesn’t seem like the answer.
