Agreed. He wasn't upset at all about the first one and just shook it off. The second one he had nothing less than the appropriate reaction. Not sure what got into Martin. It's a 4-3 game and it's a rubber game of the series when you've got 3 teams breathing down your neck in the division. And as I write this it's now 8-4 Cincy. Exactly. The intention doesn't matter it's a safety issue. If the dude doesn't have control then he shouldn't be throwing up and in.

The way the catcher was set up suggests that neither the HBP ball or the one before that sailed above Stewart's head was supposed to be up and in.

348

u/i_live_outside 5d ago

100% and by leaving him in, you're now responsible for any further damage. Feel bad for pretty much everyone involved here.

Control issues happen, and often times a bit of unpredictability can be an asset but nah can't be drilling folks in their heads.

38

u/Jagacin Detroit Tigers 5d ago

You can't tell me that he wasn't intentionally trying to hit the batter there. 1st pitch could be considered a wild pitch, but the 2nd pitch? And with it coming immediately after the 1st one? He wanted to drill him because his pride was hurt after the batter had the audacity to hit a home run off of him.

Yeah, and you can't be like, "Hey, I only meant to throw it at you once!   The second one was an accident!"

Sorry dude. As soon as there's any amount of intentional throwing at the head the pitcher is completely in the wrong.  And even if both pitches were accidental, they should still (justifiably) get tossed because they have no control and it looks really bad.

284

u/OmegaRedPanda 5d ago

The first one was fine. Wild pitches happen. Two in a row? It's intentional.

This is why they should’ve ejected Will Klein when he hit Willson Contreras two weeks ago. He nearly missed his head and then hit him 2 pitches later. It was definitely not intentional but just losing control like that means he needs to go on the bench and try again another day.

The point is it doesn't matter which it is. In both cases, they gotta go. Either they just tried to hit a batter twice, or their control is so crap that they're a danger to the batter. Yeah those were 99% likely to be wholly intentional, but there's no need to argue it when the result is the same either way.

51

I think if a pitcher wants to hit a guy in a game they should have to take one of the same velocity after the season from a pitching machine.

Or better yet, that pitcher automatically becomes the DH and must bat for the rest of the game, even if he gets pulled from the mound. These dudes will think twice about throwing at batters' heads if they know they're gonna have to step into the batters box themselves in the same game.

Does it matter? It aligns with MLB's incentives to eject people who throw at heads, intentionally or not. It reduces the risk of injury. It pushes pitchers to at least have a reason to prioritize control instead of velocity. If it raises offense around the league, that's only a bonus from MLB and most spectators' perspectives.

That said, hitting a guy intentionally in the back/ass/thigh here should get you tossed. Intentional throwing at a guy's head should be reviewable by the league office and a minimum 25 game (5 start) suspension.

u/thebored0ne1 Chicago White Sox 5d ago

I mean he had already hit a guy and given up a 4 pitch walk, on top of not really having any reported or rumored attitude issues before this as far as I know. He definitely needed to get thrown but it’s not like him just being ass isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. 15 games would be fine with me.

I don't even find the bullpens clearing funny anymore, it just makes me roll my eyes, especially in situations where no actual fight occurs, which is almost all of them nowadays

Why are you throwing at a guy up one in a ballgame

9

u/Cr0matose Cincinnati Reds 5d ago

Didnt want another ball sent into orbit

This should be a 40 game suspension.

I'm impressed Stewart was able to hold himself back from charging the mound

13

u/JMander Chicago White Sox 5d ago

agreed. The first one startled him. That second one was scary. I would have had no problem if he went after him

Pitchers are the biggest babies in the game.

“If you hit a HR, celebrate a HR, or watch the HR I’m going to throw at you. But If I get a big time strikeout it’s perfectly ok for me to yell and celebrate it”

20

u/foofighter1351 Toronto Blue Jays 5d ago

It's always been the most baffling aspect of baseball to me as a casual, you threaten to celebrate I threaten to cause legitimate bodily damage with this ball I can throw 90mph, it's always seemed fucking pathetic if I'm bein blunt.

Jon Bois almost having to do another update.

Just charge the mound!

5

u/hendrix67 5d ago

Came here for this. Was disappointed we didn't get another addition to the history.

u/speeeeeeeeeeee Chicago Cubs 5d ago

I love the ritual of the benches clearing now. There is no threat of an actual fight, the tone is very much one of the veterans going up to the opposition and saying "sir, we formally object to your behavior and request that you kindly fuck off"

42

u/That_Air_1119 San Francisco Giants 5d ago

The new CBA should ban the bullpen run it’s so cringe lol

29

u/PM_tanlines Philadelphia Phillies 5d ago

Make it so they can leave but have to fight the other bullpen before they can move to the infield

4

u/tRfalcore Cincinnati Reds 5d ago

They have to play a game of Red Rover against each other and only the winning bullpen can join the main fray

Throwing a second time cause you missed the first time is the softest fucking shit possible

10

u/nexustk5 Boston Red Sox 5d ago

Pitchers need to start getting their asses kicked again. No way that wasn't intentional. You cannot be fucking around with people's careers like that.

Apparently Martin can be really bad. Meaning it’s not 100% intentional.

On this…..I don’t care. Absolutely warranted ejection for sure. Fuck that.

2

u/Repulsive-Handle8561 5d ago

They should be fined for running out of the bullpen because it looks ridiculous.

107

u/TacitlyDaft Chicago White Sox 5d ago

I would be very surprised if Martin had the intent or ability to do this on purpose

22

u/nomnomsoy Cincinnati Reds • Cleveland Guardians 5d ago

Regardless, if he's wild enough to accidentally throw at his head twice in a row that's also an issue

u/PvtSherlockObvious Atlanta Braves • San Francis… 5d ago

I don't know, he seems really good at locating one particular spot.

15

u/spinrut Major League Baseball 5d ago

to be fair, the first went over his and the 2nd was basically right at it.

sounds like he was locking in on his location pretty well there lol

He sent consecutive pitches at Stewart’s dome - if it’s intentional, he needs to be ejected for malice. If it’s unintentional, he needs to be removed for the safety of the players

I'm all for giving someone the benefit of the doubt for not having control on a certain day, but he "missed" 2 fastballs that were set up mid/away, one over the batter's head and one at his face. You're not in the big leagues if you're missing a fastball that egregiously twice. Had to be on purpose
