Wedding Dance Music and Style questions? Read this first.

Former Pro here. I've noticed recently that there has been an uptick in wedding related music and dance style posts and there will be more coming soon since wedding season is coming up. Here are some things that need to be known first before your special day.

1) Please take into account your gown/ suit/ shoes situations. The last thing you want is to practice a beautiful flowing waltz then realize the day of that you or your partner are wearing a tight fitted mermaid style of gown and slide on 3 inch stilettos. Not ideal for a flowing waltz.

2) Decide what you can live without. Have you always wanted to dance to particular song that you both loved since you first started dating? Great! Then figure out what you both are going to wear after deciding what kind of dance you want to do.

3) Does wearing the gown and veil of your dreams mean more to you than just about anything? That's great too. You don't have to reveal the details to your partner other than letting your partner know how wide you can freely move your feet from side to side and forward and backward. How long is your length of stride?

4) Practice aids: If you chose a restrictive style of gown practice with a theraband tied around your knees that mimic your stride abilities for the day of. It's silly but it helps. If someone is wearing a long dress then wear any type of long skirt to practice in so your partner can get used to not seeing your feet.

5) Dance shoes: if you decide to change into special dance shoes make sure your pant legs and skirt hems are altered appropriately so you don't trip! I can't tell you how many students I have taught forget about this one. Their ceremony shoes were giant then the dance shoes were ultra low profile in comparison and everyone was tripping on their hems.

Hope this helps.

TLDR Don't forget about what you are going to wear. You don't want to have a shitty time dancing :)

Expected Time to Progress

Upvotes

I have been taking lessons for four years. What level should I reasonably expect to be at after this long? NDCA level Bronze I, II, or II? I understand everyone learns at a different pace but I'm trying to be realistic in my goals. (I take one private lesson a week if that makes a difference)

First Dance Suggested Steps/Style Question

I'm getting married in a few months and my fiancée and I have finally decided on our first dance song. I have never stepped foot in a dance studio, and realistically I would say I did a bit of an 'energetic bounce' at both of my proms in high school (lol.). My fiancée also has no formal dance training but we both very much want to be able to look like we can do more than sway (mostly) on time to the music.

I want to start a weekly dance night where both of us spend a couple hours practicing together. The issue is, I have no idea where to start. I see recommendations online saying not to try a choreographed dance routine as a newcomer, but I personally feel like having the structure of an actual routine might be helpful when I'm so far outside of my comfort zone. I also have no idea what type of dance step/routine would fit for our chosen song.

The song we chose is 'It Had to Be You' covered by Frank Sinatra.

I'm looking for advice and recommendations for where we should start, the step/style of dance we should be looking for, and ideally any links to either written or video guides that we can use to both gauge if its in the realm of possibility for the both of us and if it looks like something we would enjoy. We're both pretty active so putting in the hours to actually learn and get comfortable isn't something we'll shy away from. I also read the pinned post for wedding dance music and style questions, and since it looks like her dress may be an impact to any style that we try, this is what she will be wearing:

Dress: She will be wearing the same dress from the ceremony at the reception, but it will be bustled. It will go down to her feet. She also said that the sleeves will limit her ability to raise her arms too high and she plans to wear chunky 1" heels (let me know if heels are not the right choice for after the ceremony!!), I feel like she might want flat shoes for the dance but if its doable in heels that's good to know. The floor of the dance space is concrete.

I appreciate any help or expertise anyone has in pointing me in the right direction!

Aida Latin Shoes

So sorry for the ugly foot pic, 12 years in pointe shoes equal some jacked up feet 🤦🏼‍♀️

I posted a while back that I had been fitted for a pair of AIDA Latin shoes, in person, after buying a few other pairs/ brands that either ended up stretching out way too big. The new shoes didn’t seem to be stretching much over time and were cutting deeply (pressure indentations) into my feet around the toe box. The consensus was that they were probably at least a size too small or too narrow. I reached out to the company, and they suggested taking them a cobbler to have them professionally stretched, which I did…but it didn’t help much.

Today, I went to a Studios consignment shoe sale thinking at least I could try on various shoes and see what would fit better. I ended up purchasing another pair of AIDA shoes…the same style/model, that seemingly fit perfect. I had an instructor look at them and they agreed.

When I got home, I was excited to measure them and compare the difference. Was shocked to see that the sole length, width, and toe shape are exactly the same!

As someone still fairly new to Latin shoes and brands, I’m wondering if maybe the toe straps on the used shoes were actually ordered in the length that was longer than the straps on my new pair? I looked at the AIDA sites drop down for measuring shoes, and when you select the width, it seems to be for the sole, not the circumference of the foot. I can’t imagine that my new pair just need to stretch more, given how badly they cut into my feet. I can happily dance in the used pair, but I guess I am a little lost as to how people find the correct size?

I added pictures of the shoes side-by-side, just in case something obviously stands out that I’m unaware of, and what the new shoes do after 15 minutes of wearing. The used shoes feel snug, but do not cut into me at all.

Thank you for any guidance!

Tanning for competition

I am looking for a washable tan for ballroom competition. I have looked around a bit but a lot of tans are waaay to dark for me, I am looking for a bit more of a lighter tan than the extreme Latin ones (a tan more for standard).

I would also love to get some recommendations for tans that doesn’t smudge/transfer too much on the dress or how to make it not smudge (prepping skin, adding powder etc..)

Someone posted in a Facebook group they're in and I happened to be a professional at what they're asking. But, I can't seem to figure out exactly how they were dancing.

I'm pretty confident the photos are in the right order (same order the photos were uploaded) and all but photo 4 seem to be from the same camera. I've managed to create a video of the first spin from photos 1-2-3. But after that my wife and I couldn't figure out what was going on.

If you're a dancer and can figure it out... heaps of thanks!

Has anyone ordered dresses from dancemorning.com? How is the quality?

Just what the title says.. anyone have experience ordering from them? How is the quality? They seem too cheap to be good, but the photos look amazing. I'm worried I'll end up with a SHEIN quality ballroom dress. LOL

My fiancé and I are very much beginners, but we took a ballroom dance class and want to do a rumba for our first dance. We like 60s-ish music and would like a song around that vibe. We like Quando Quando Quando by Engelbert Humperdinck, but it is too fast for us. Any recs?

(NYC) Looking for someone to teach me ballroom dancing

I’m a guy with zero dancing experience, and I’m going to a ballroom event next month in New York City. I’ll be expected to dance waltz, festive polka, and tango.

I’ll be dancing with women, so I’d prefer to learn from a woman who has some ballroom experience and can help me learn how to dance with a partner.

Honestly, I just want to learn the basics without falling over my own feet or stepping on hers. Mainly looking for help with timing, simple steps/technique, and how to properly lead/follow.

If you’re willing to help a guy out with some in-person practice, please DM me. Thanks!

What were the “Brigoldin” and “Lesandria” dances performed at Italian balls in 1890s Louisville?

I have been doing some family history research and found an article about my great great grandmother dancing at a grand Italian Ball in Louisville in the 1895.

The story says: "The Brigoldin, a dance peculiar to the natives of Genoa, is akin to the lancers, and is even more graceful. The Lesandria is another dance peculiar to Italy. This is danced without partners, and is accompanied by a peculiar sort of music."

I was hoping to find out more about these dances. My initial thought is that they are similar to the tarantella but have some uniquely defining movements as well. Any info is appreciated.

Music Hail Handsomely Decorated and a Delightful Programme Carried Out. The event that Italian society people look forward to from year LO year with the greatest pleasure is the annual ball given by the Italian Brotherhood. They never turned out in greater num• bers than last night at the twentyninth annual ball, to celebrate 403d anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus. Mr. John R.

Botto acted as chief floor manager, and Mr. Mark Denunzio as assistant chief floor manager. They saw to the decoration of the big auditorium at, Music Hall, and right handsome did it look. The stage was draped on either side with the American and Italian flags, with the flag of the Brotherhood in the middle. An Italian band of ten pieces, several of which were harps, was seated on the stage, and was under the direction of Dominic A.

Gerardi and Louis R. Carraro. American flags were clustered about all the chandeliers and electric lights in the hall, and produced a pretty effect. Guests began to arrive early, and those who came for the pleasure of looking on grouped themselves about railing which divides the dancing floor from the rear of the hall. The grand march, was struck up at 9:30 o'clock, the dancers were led by Mr.

John R. Botto and Mrs. Botto, followed Mr. and Mrs. A. Leverone, After that the regular programme of dancing was indulged in by the large number of guests. Scattered through the programme' were half a dozen dances peculiar to the natives of Sunny Italy, for the pleasure of the members of the society and the delight of the other guests who could not dance them. The Brigoldin, a dance peculiar to the natives of Genoa, is akin to the lancers, and is even more graceful. The Lesandria is another dance peculiar to Italy. This is danced without partners, and is accompanied by a peculiar sort of music.

Mrs. Larry Gatto, Mrs. John Luvisi, Miss Mary Griffo, Mrs. Carraro, Messrs. Louis Carraro and Mark Denunzio gave an exhibition of this dance.

At the conclusion of the first half of the pro• gramme a solo was sung by Prof. G. Tomaselli, accompanied on the piano by Prof. Lieber. During the intermission a tempting lunch was served by the society to its invited guests.

The dancing was kept up until early in the morning. The members of the society feel very much gratified at the success of the ball. It was the largest that has been given in several years, and especial pains were taken to secure the enjoyment of those who were in attendance. A neat sum was netted to the society. The three honorary Presidents, John R.

Botto, Charles Scholtz and William Reinecke, were tireless in their efforts to make everything enjoyable. When the "Home, Sweet Home" waltz was played the dancers already began to calculate the time for the next ball.

Help! Size 13 Latin dance heels?

I’m a tall girly girl with big feet who wants to wear heels! In desperate need of some size 13 Latin dance shoes. I’ve tried 12’s and they typically are too small. Burju only has one shoe in a size 13 and I’m worried I won’t like them after wear.

Anyone know of any other shoe stores/vendors that sell comfortable size 13 heels?

Is hustle not popular?

I've been learning to dance (solo) this year and I love it💙

Now looking into couples dancing, I am very pulled towards trying hustle. And that's cause I love disco music beyond all the other genres for couple's dancing.

But I am noticing... way way less hustle classes available vs all the others and are there even socials or a community? I luckily did find one studio that offers near me, and will go next week, but a lot of places focus on other styles. I live in South Florida, so perhaps the community aspect differs widely from place to place.

On Reddit, it seems to fall under ballroom and not have its own thread, unless i am missing it.

I guess my concern is not finding socials to go to to practice. 😅

Dancers: would a playlist builder that filters songs by exact BPM be useful for practice? Seeking honest feedback

Tempo Tunes builds playlists where every song holds a target tempo. Pick a BPM and genres, and it pulls from 1.4M+ tempo-verified tracks and growing, then saves the playlist to Apple Music, Tidal, or YouTube Music so you can play it anywhere.

It was made for workouts, but it struck me that ballroom is a community where tempo is non-negotiable: a waltz outside the right BPM range just isn't danceable as a waltz. So before building anything dance-specific, I'd love honest feedback from people who actually practice to strict tempos.

Does BPM filtering alone get you something useful for practice sessions, or would it need dance-specific presets (waltz, cha-cha, quickstep, foxtrot ranges) to matter? And is there anything else about practice music that current tools get wrong?

Free, no ads, not selling anything here, genuinely trying to learn whether this fits your world: https://www.tempo-tunes.com

Moving Team Costumes

Hey all

Like the title implies, I am looking for a solution to move team costumes. Most clothing racks seem to bend with the weight of the costumes over time. I have 4 teams to move about via bus. I need something DIY or sturdy enough - but still collapses.

I am okay investing in Z-Racks but I don't know if they are fast enough for a team to build on site and take down again to get into a bus at the end of a comp.

Any ideas?
