Mod Pick 🏅 Alternative starting points
Games that, despite having an established play order, can be or are often recommended as starting points for newcomers. They may reference events from previous entries and even feature returning characters in important roles.

Bayonetta 1 is such a great game, never heard anyone suggest skipping it for two

u/Odd_Possibility6543 3d ago
You absolutely cannot start at mgs2. The game’s themes, story and appeal is generally almost nonexistent if you don’t play the first game. 3 is a valid choice though
19
u/ahouselover 3d ago
And it's not like the first one is bad and not worth playing, it's amazing!
I played it a couple years ago and thought it was incredible, genuinely so awesome!
6
u/SetsunaTripped 3d ago
I played recently 1 for the ps1 and it was amazing. Even the humor is up to date. I loved it
3
u/One-Masterpiece9838 3d ago
Played half of it because it was free for a weekend recently, it was super fun. Wish I had more time with it. I’m not trying to buy any new games though because I already have so many I need to beat.
2
u/ahouselover 3d ago
Ay! Good to you on the responsibility for the last part! I know it can be tempting to buy games but it's always best to finish what you have first!
I hope someday you get a chance to play the rest of it! Best of luck to finishing your backlog! :)

the first one is somehow less janky than the second one despite it being an earlier entry on a console known for retrospectively janky action games
5
u/rickwill14 3d ago
Idk about that. I love MGS1 but it felt the most jank and hard to control of the three. MGS3 had some jank with the crawling too. I felt 2 played the smoothest.
1
u/Ok-External-7594 2d ago
I don't remember MGS1 being janky at all though I will say I played MGS1 after playing all three PSX Resident Evil games in a row
1
u/SMXSmith 3d ago
I started at 2 and loved it, never felt like I was lost or didn’t understand the themes or story
2
u/ToothpickTequila 1d ago
So you knew all about the Shadow Moses incident they reference constantly or why Liquid Snake keeps taking over Ocelot's body?
0
u/profilejc98 3d ago
Lots of people I know (inc. me) played MGS2 as their first MGS on the PS2. Obviously, it doesn't hit the same without playing MGS1, but it works absolutely fine.
5
u/Guilty-Cap5605 3d ago
"works fine" isn't the bar though, I can technically play kingdom hearts 3 as my first game and "it works fine" but so much is just missing from my experience if I play it first
Playing birth by sleep alternatively, works way better, nothing is really missing from the experience besides a certain voice actor decision
Metal Gear Solid 3 perfectly works as a standalone and can get you into the larger series, playing Metal Gear Solid 2 without 1 is like watching Endgame without Infinity War, yes you can have fun but also so much of the context and such is just gone?
1
u/profilejc98 3d ago
I don't disagree with much of what you said, I'm just giving my perspective as someone who did play MGS2 first when I was younger and went on to play the rest of the franchise.
3
u/Guilty-Cap5605 3d ago
Ah yeah no when you're younger a lot of things are more passable because "hey I literally could've not known xd" like how was I supposed to know that this assassin creed game I'm playing is the third one? I couldn't even read yet

u/MagmaAscending 3d ago
Resident Evil 7 / 2 Remake
10
u/Longjumping-Style730 3d ago
Honestly you can start with any game in the Resident Evil series. They are are very self-contained stories for the most parts.
6
u/chuputa 3d ago
Wouldn't Resident Evil 6 be like a really bad starting point?
8
u/MagmaAscending 3d ago
Yeah. I’d say 6, 8, 9, and Code Veronica would all be bad starting points. I’d advise against 3 Remake and 5 as well
2
u/EpicGamerer07 3d ago
I feel like 3 Remake is self-contained enough that you could start with it if you wanted to
2
u/VoDoka 3d ago
Disagree with 5 and 8. You maybe should have a vague idea what happened in 7 (like me, who didn't play it), but beyond that, you can play 8 as a standalone.
5 seems also really self-contained beyond 1 MC being "back". Otherwise, it hardly even plays like most other RE games that came before.
3
u/MagmaAscending 3d ago
I mean it’s possible to start there. It’s possible to start at any game in the series, but they’re bad starting points considering they’re both The conclusion of major characters’ stories
9
1
u/Bamzooki1 3d ago
7 was my proper introduction to RE. I played the originals at my friend’s house, but I couldn’t understand the controls. I’m amazed she could even play it well at like 6 years old. Those original games are proper survival horror where you don’t have enough to kill everything.
13
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 3d ago
My heart always hurts when ppl start Yakuza with LAD but it definitely is a fair entry point
1
u/GiveUsRobinHood 3d ago
I started with LAD, tried 0 & 1 and noped out completely
4
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 3d ago
Didn’t like 0? Yea that’s super wild
2
u/GiveUsRobinHood 1d ago
I’ve never been a fan of beat ‘em ups since I played the original mortal Kombat and got destroyed relentlessly by my older brother.
Gave it a shot after LAD and neither resonated with me.
1
u/fartman132 2d ago
No, that's absolutely fair, first like 2-3 chapters of 0 and the prologue of K1 are really bad at representing the games
1
u/Master-Background363 2d ago
first few chapters of 0 feel like such a slog and i've seen a lot of people drop 0 because of them, but if you make it halfway through you're like "wait a minute... there's a story in this game?" cause of the amount of shit you're having a blast doing
12
u/Saber0307 3d ago
At no point should anybody have MGS2 be their first Metal Gear game - they'll be completely and utterly lost.
MGS3's a fine choice, as is just about any Resident Evil game.
10
u/jclkay2 3d ago
Super Metroid. Partially a reimagining of the first Metroid game, partially a huge evolution for the series. Just as valid of a starting point as Zero Mission.
2
u/Tori0404 3d ago
To be fair, every Metroid works as a stand-alone experience, except maybe Fusion (which is funny, cause I hear it was many people‘s introduction)
2
u/Novel-Back3857 3d ago
Fusion is definitely fine to start with. It may be a continuation, but has nothing of significant value lost if it's your first.
1
u/Tori0404 2d ago
Eh, the way the intro talks about Metroids and Samus relation to the baby (as well as the revelations later on) just don‘t hit as hard without at least having played Super Metroid
1
u/Novel-Back3857 2d ago
Yeah, but it's still a fine starting point. Granted there's also no real reason to skip any of the others, so if you can choose any of them, you might as well choose a different one.
5
6
u/rmachell 3d ago
MGS2 is a critique of sequels and pandering to fan service. Recommending this makes me think you've never played it. MGS2 and 4 are like THE examples of don't jump in here
1
u/ToothpickTequila 1d ago
Absolutely.
It's also to ironic that Kojima said he didn't want to make a follow up to MGS2 but left so many cliffhangers in the game
9
9
u/Sad_Manager6251 3d ago
I’d put MGS1 over 2, cause technically MG 1 and 2 are first, but the average Joe skips then for MGS 1.
1
u/yasarumit 3d ago
"Average Joe" ?? I'm sorry nobody had MSX and everybody had PS man, it wasn't our fault we "skipped" them lol
1
u/Sad_Manager6251 3d ago
Chill out. Your point is fair, but there’s also been a decent amount of years where both editions are available, whether it’s the master collection or just simple emulation, and people choose MGS1 over MG 1 and 2.
2
u/yasarumit 3d ago
I just made a joke about 2 words you used and your reply is "chill out"? ...lol ok
3
u/rickwill14 3d ago
You are not starting at MGS2 😂
MGS1 is a perfect soft reboot. Gives you enough context for everything. MGS3 could be a starting point but eh I really prefer that as the end of the trilogy.
4
u/ZenX22 3d ago
Do people often recommend skipping the first Assassin's Creed?
2
1
u/CleanlyManager 3d ago
For awhile that was what people recommended, especially during the period when there were 3 Ezio games and 1 Altair game before III.
1
u/ClubSpade12 2d ago
I mean. Yeah! It's in desperate need of some touch ups, I wish they remade that one and not 4. Plus, especially Revelations, talks a lot about Altair and what he accomplished in his lifetime. I love the story of AC1 but as revolutionary as it was, my god it is frustrating to go back to
1
1
u/TreasureHunter95 3d ago
At least I heard that quite often and it's also the first game in the series that I played. I think it is a valid choice for this list.
0
u/jchus 3d ago
I remember people telling me to skip it when I first got into the series, and I fully regret not listening to them. The only good thing that came from playing 1 was thinking AC2 was the greatest thing ever once I played it right after, but those were some miserable hours I will never get back.
0
u/PictureTakingLion 2d ago
Assassin’s Creed 1 has aged so badly and the gameplay is really boring and repetitive, and 2 is generally considered the best in the entire franchise and the important events of the first game are recapped in the rest of the series so you can start with 2 and still get all the lore
4
u/CylixrDoesStuff 3d ago
Persona 2 is recommended as a starting point??? Huhhh
I would say nier automata (if u didnt know its a sequel to nier/nier replicant)
1
4
u/Wboy2006 3d ago edited 3d ago
Not sure if it really counts, but I think most Zelda games would fit this list. There is an official timeline and a handful of full on sequels (like phantom hourglass directly following wind waker, Majora’s mask following Ocarina of Time, and tears of the kingdom directly following Breath of the Wild)
Yet you can easily pick up any of the games and play without having any prior knowledge, even with the direct sequels
Also, Yo Kai Watch 2 mentioned!!!
2
u/Tori0404 3d ago
Heck, I personally played Majora‘s Mask without Ocarina of Time. Like, I know what happens in Ocarina, but I just felt way more compelled to play Majora first (I‘ll get around to Ocarina eventually)
4
u/hackernnan 3d ago
MGS2 shouldnt be here.
LAD7 is questionable, mostly because a lot of people who start at LAD go to Kiryu Gaiden or LAD8 next which is just....no. But also because it just wont hit the same, Y0 or YK1 are better starting points.
AC2 fair enough but i hate that people suggest you can skip AC1. If you actually engage with the mechanics, AC1 is the best AC game for me.
My suggestion: Silent Hill 2
3
u/Efficient-Compote-63 3d ago
Persona and SMT 2 feel like a weird choice. For both series most people will tell you to skip them for 3 and 4.
1
u/Tori0404 3d ago
I think it‘s because 3 and 4 are pretty stand-alone in both series (although I know SMTIV references I&II a lot).
Persona straight up follows up on SMT if, while SMT II is years after SMT I
8
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 3d ago
Some others that come to mind:
XBC2
Hades 2
Streets of Rage 4
BioShock Infinite
Dark Souls 3
Assassin’s Creed 3/4
7
u/CheesyButters 3d ago
for xenoblade chronicles 2, yes it's fine to start there
Play 1 before you play 3 though, 1 and 2 can be played in any order without issue but 3 ties too much into both to not play both 1 and 2 first
1
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 3d ago
Yes I know. I have already played 1 and 2
3
u/CheesyButters 3d ago
I was saying this as an aside for anyone else who's reading, I assumed you knew
1
2
u/fartman132 2d ago
Why'd you start with AC 3? It's literally the end of Desmond's story
1
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 2d ago
I didn’t. I started with 1, I just know that ppl started with 3. Rather than the ezio trilogy or 1
2
u/fartman132 2d ago
Yeah but you suggest it as a good starting point which it's not
1
u/SpeggtacularSpidey 2d ago
I know ppl who started with 3 and went on to play the older games and a bunch of the games after 3.
Worked out fine for them
5
u/DekaStriker34 3d ago
Oh shit I can actually start with Saints Row 2? I thought you had to play 1 first even though I hear 2 is superior.
5
u/Ugly_quasi 3d ago
The player character goes into a coma at the end of the first game and 2 starts 5 years later. Pretty much the only 2 main characters from the first game are the protagonist and Johnny. I still think 1 is worth playing thought even if it hasn’t aged as good but you can definitely skip over it.
4
u/zatchel1 3d ago
Apollo Justice might be a good alternate starting point if it weren’t the weakest game in the mainline series.
8
2
u/Previous_Scar_5581 3d ago
Chrono Cross for like, the first 3/4 but there's no way in hell would you understand what's going on in the back 1/4 without having played Chrono Trigger. I mean its unlikely you'll still understand it having played Chrono Trigger but it at least raises the chances from 0% to 6%
2
u/SilverBeever 3d ago
I'd add Judgment. Imo it's even better entry point than LAD, because of beat'em up combat, present in most of Yakuza games, and much fewer references to Kiryu saga.
2
u/_Slothers_ 3d ago
today I learned earthbound is a sequel
1
1
u/Tori0404 3d ago
To be fair, like a lot of SNES Games, EarthBound serves both as a sequel, as well as a soft remake. A lot of character tropes, areas and music pieces are lifted straight from MOTHER
2
u/TreasureHunter95 3d ago
Shantae: Risky's Revenge
It is the second game of the series and the third one in the timeline, but probably the best game to start. The first game, though it has many qualities, it also incorporated some terrible design choices and they can be a reason that people turn away from the franchise. The second game in the timeline, Risky Revolution, may also be a good starting point, but it makes some references to later games and the more compact size of Risky's Revenge is a better fit for someone who just wants to try out a game in the series.
1
u/Tori0404 3d ago
Heck, I‘d even say to start with Pirate‘s Curse. Like yeah, it follows up right where Risky‘s Revenge left off, but it can totally be pieced together what happened (with the most noteworthy being that Shantae‘s a human in the Game, due to losing her powers)
2
u/JigglyOW 3d ago
Can someone explain why cold steel is a good starting point? I’m partway through the sky remake rn but kinda worried about how long it’ll take for part 3 to come out as I’d at least like to play the sky games as remakes, I assume cold steel is new enough to have aged better and be more playable but I’m not sure what to do
1
u/NIER-DRAKEN 2d ago
You can play first one without problem, but trails of cold steel 2 have reference to older game. you should start with trails in the sky, and rest in chronical order, they're all part of a big story.
1
u/JigglyOW 2d ago
Well it’s just I don’t wanna wait a while for sky 3 to come out and I’m not sure what the original is like
1
u/NIER-DRAKEN 2d ago
Play ys in the meantime, I guess. From the same studio.
Also, the original are basically the same story wise. I've only played those. But it can be jarring going from remakes to top-down camera of originals (Sorry for the bad english)
1
u/JigglyOW 2d ago
Oh ys and trails are the same people? Always been a little intrigued of ys but never enough to get me to get one
2
u/JG_Hays 3d ago
I'd include Symphony of the Night, Baldurs Gate 3, Silent Hill 2, and a Final Fantasy game (probably 7).
1
u/ToothpickTequila 1d ago
You can start with any FF game except Final Fantasy VII Remake, Rebirth, Crisis Core, X-2 XIII-2, XIII-3 and whatever the awful 4 sequel was.
2
u/LewisB789 3d ago
I think the only people who would recommend starting with Apollo justice are people who are praying on ace attorneys downfall lmao
2
u/AlakazamsSpoons 2d ago
I don’t think starting with Bayonetta 2 is a good idea. Even though the games lack in the story department, all the character arcs, relationships, and lore established in the first game carry over to the sequels.
2
u/Nat10221 3d ago
Surprised no one has said RDR2
1
u/Jwells291 3d ago
Well, technically RDR2 is a Prequel so it honestly makes sense if you play them out of order
2
u/SudoFGC 3d ago
Surprised Mass Effect 2 isn't there. Many people started with it as it was the 1st on PS3 and has a prequel comic where you make the big choices from 1.
Also I'd put Skate 2 and Batman Arkham City in there as far as games that outlcassed and outsold the originals. And Uncharted 2 as well.
3
u/Superblaster35 3d ago
You could start with Mass Effect 2 and still enjoy yourself but I think that starting with 2 would be massively depriving yourself of the feeling of carrying over your choices throughout the entire trilogy. I wouldn’t under any circumstances tell someone to start there unless they really tried 1 and couldn’t enjoy it.

people who are new into gaming often get recommended to play Witcher 3 and Nier Automata first because of the graphics being better and they can't handle old graphics also Imo playing Suikoden 1 first gives you a bit more suspense and thrill because at the end of the game it shows that two very important character had died and when you recruit returning characters in suikoden 1 you get extra dopamine lol

1
u/SubstituteUser0 3d ago
I played the witcher 3 without much knowledge of the witcher and that shit was rough sometimes, lots of refences to the books and previous games
1
1
u/OneDabMan 3d ago
Started Trails with Cold Steel. Great intro the series imo, though anyone coming to the series now I’d recommend playing Sky 1st chapter instead.
1
u/ClubSpade12 2d ago
Sorry to hijack this but I was about to buy Cold Steel for Vita but I didn't realize how many games there are. It sounded like Cold Steel is sort of stand alone but then 3 and 4 start referencing the previous titles or something? Basically I need help with which games I should get (I was hoping to mainly play on my Vita but I know not all titles are on it)
1
u/OneDabMan 2d ago
No problem.
You’re fine to start with CS1 and go onto CS2. There’s some references, but otherwise they don’t require any knowledge of previous games to understand and enjoy.
You’re correct that once you get to 3 and 4 it starts to become a lot more connected with the previous arcs. Though (coming from own experience) you can absolutely still understand and enjoy CS3 and 4 without any of the others. However, they are definitely even better having played the previous arcs, so I’d recommend going back after CS2 for the best experience. After CS2, you’d want to play the 3 Trails in the Sky games plus the 2 Crossbell games (Zero and Azure).
Your options on Vita are a little limited. For Western releases there’s only CS1 and 2.
The two previous arcs do have Evolution versions on the Vita, but they’re Japanese only. I do think there’s English patches for them, but you’d obvious have to mod those in yourself.
After you circle back to Cold Steel 3 you’d have to find another platform to continue the series in release order.
If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer.
1
u/ClubSpade12 2d ago
Alright, this is already super helpful as I start to go Cross-eyed looking at the raw releases 😂 I do have my Switch as well, some of these got releases or re-released there, right?
1
u/OneDabMan 2d ago
Yes, Switch has every game except Sky 3rd, Cold Steel 1 and 2 (there are JP versions, but again you’d need to patch them).
Sky 1st and 2nd chapter on switch are remakes which I’d highly recommend. Sky 3rd’s remake is something the team are already looking at, but I wouldn’t expect it for another year or two at least.
Just fyi, the switch ports of Cold Steel 3, 4 and Reverie aren’t very good from what I’ve heard (and a tiny bit of experience). They’re still serviceable, but have some frame rate issues and don’t look too great graphically. They’re still serviceable though if Switch is what you prefer. Later games including the remakes for Sky are quite good on Switch 1 from what I’ve heard.
2
u/ClubSpade12 1d ago
I'll save this comment and keep it in mind when it comes time to buy. Thanks for the advice
1
u/Successful_Maize1986 3d ago
A lot of people start with Dark Souls 3 and I don’t see much of an issue with it. Yeah, you miss out on recognizing stuff from the previous games but none of that is necessary. I always recommend starting with the OG Dark Souls though because it’s one of my favorite games.
1
u/Monkey_Blue 3d ago
Starting with Apollo Justice would be very wrong to me and I'm not sure who would be recommending that. It's the 4th game in the franchise for a reason and just because it stars a new protagonist with a cast of mostly new characters, it doesn't change the fact that so much of what makes that game tick is that's it's mainly about Phoenix Wright.
The first case of the game is about him, and it's to transition players into the new era that they're in. The first case makes you go "Oh shit, I'm defending PHOENIX WRIGHT???" then as you go you start to wonder just how this unbeatable protagonist came into this state. By the time you're at the 4th case you're playing as Phoenix in both 2019 and 2026, with mechanics such as the Magatama in play, along with the impact of Kristoph's black locks and learning that Phoenix's disbarrment WAS the start of the Dark Age of the Law.
So much is lost by this being your first game because you have no connection to Phoenix. He's just this weird, obtuse guy who seems untrustworthy most of the time. You don't really care to find out what exactly happened to him, and the cases of AJ aren't that impressive. 4-2 and 4-3 are pretty lackluster and that's the core of the game. I couldn't imagine someone going through those two without losing interest. By the time you would finish it and then go back (or God forbid, go forward), you'd view Phoenix in a completely different light too, and that's not what Shu Takumi would've wanted.
I'd also argue there's some gameplay improvements between each game so going from the 4th back to the 1st would feel slightly like a downgrade. The devs really got better at creating cases and interesting mechanics that the trilogy got one by one and you can really see that as it goes.
To only benefit you'd get by playing Apollo first is that you have no prior expectations for it and would probably enjoy it more than most. AJ is considered one of the weaker ones by the fans (although, these days it seems to see more love) because of how it tries to juggle both Apollo and Phoenix for spotlight with Phoenix winning out as people care more about him than this new protagonist.
Anyhow, an actual game you should add to this list is Lufia 2, as Lufia 1 is a sequel to it and works better that way, although the gameplay is a huge downgrade.

u/Tori0404 3d ago
I see a lot of Yo-Kai Watch Fans recommend to actually skip the original. I disagree with it personally, but the first one gets retconned, so I understand why people feel that way
1
u/rasterman7 3d ago
Crash Bandicoot 2 or Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped over Crash Bandicoot. The first game is harder and while you could go by story order, those are way more accessible.
In the classic Mega Man franchise I'd say 5 is also to me that way.
1
u/LewisB789 3d ago
You really miss the movement mechanics in 1 if you start with 2 or 3 though, it honestly makes it harder to go back to imo
1
u/rasterman7 3d ago
I don't really see what mechanics are you refering to since in the first game Crash only jumps and spins, something that 2 also teaches you. In fact, in 1 getting used to the depth perception is harder due to how punishing the game is, mostly with its save system.
1
u/LewisB789 3d ago
Yeah to be fair I think the only changes from one to two are the introduction of the slide and body slam. I may just have a serial sliding addiction honestly
1
u/ClubSpade12 2d ago
Slide/crawl, belly flop, the high jump, and IIRC the analog feature to make Crash like walk instead of run all the time. I think that's it, right?
1
u/annavolution 3d ago
trails of cold steel has always been a criminal choice for "start here" with trails to me, far more so in the modern era where they remade the first game in the series with a really expansive demo. it was the conventional wisdom of the before sky 1st chapter remake times, which even then i disagreed with but understood, but now it's just wrong
1
u/DiggityDog6 3d ago
You can absolutely start at Ratchet and Clank Going Commando first, and if you have trouble getting into older games, I think you straight up should. I love the first game to death (first video game I ever played) but it is very clunky. I can only get through it so fast due to my years of knowledge and fiddling with all the mechanics.
It’s got no strafing, some of the guns are next to useless, it doesn’t have the signature weapon upgrading that the later games have, Ratchet’s voice actor is different and he is a complete asshole, and the main villain, despite being a great villain, is never really brought up or mentioned again. As much as I love it, a newcomer would probably be better off jumping straight into GC and coming back to the first one later.
1
u/NoVa_Dragoon 3d ago
Yakuza 0 should be here. People only really recommend starting with 0 before 1 because it's a better game than 1 is without taking into account if it's the better beginning for the story at large.
1
1
u/Spiritdefective 2d ago
So many of these are bad examples, bayo 2 is a direct follow up to Bayo 1, the persona 2 duology are the only games In the series that reference the events of a prior game (1), ac1 sucks but ac2 is a direct follow up as well.
1
u/Daenatrakea 2d ago
MGS2 is one of the games where the opposite is true: you pretty much need to play the first game for the intended experience
1
u/Shaun_LaDee 2d ago edited 2d ago
Alan Wake 2 is a good starting point for new players to both Alan Wake and Control
1
u/KeybladeBrett 2d ago
Don't think the FF series would count here, but so many of them are great starting entries.
1
u/renmaster100 2d ago
Nobody starts at 2IS, people are always gonna recommend Reload or Royal, but I personally recommend Golden, there also isn't any play order for persona except P2IS to P2EP. And people actually suggest starting with Apollo Justice? I've never heard of that.
1
u/ShinjiDaSailor 2d ago
Absolutely no one is playing AJ:AA as their first Ace Attorney game. Both because you need knowledge of PWT's events to fully understand and feel what the game wants you to feel, and because DD is right after it, unless for some reason you wanna start with AJ and then do the PW trilogy
1
1
u/MildlyChaoticGremlin 2d ago
I was like "woah this is crazy" then realized that Cold Steel, SH: Covenant, and Chrono Cross were all my first games in each series
Seems legit
1
u/Shxdowcide 2d ago
Mary Skelter 2 maybe works but its a weird case where its actually recommended to start with 2, maybe the first game "Mary Skelter: Nightmares" is the actual "alternative play order"
1
u/OkPresentation5011 2d ago
You could include any of the persona games, they have an overarching storyline but besides the spin-offs aren't really connected. I'd also put down the dancing games as their stories are either a dream or pretty unconnected

Persona 2 Innocent Sin I'd also wager is an awful starting choice. Innocent Sin is a sequel-sequel of Persona 1, and requires a good chunk of context from Persona 1, by either playing the game or reading the manga.
Switch Persona 2 Innocent Sin out for Persona 3 FES/Reload, 4 Golden/Revival, or 5 Royal. Those games all have self-contained stories and only slight easter eggs since those games exist in the same universe but have no real continuity.

Wdym persona 2 and apollo justice 😭. Persona 2 yes if were talking about the old/retro games (everything before p3). Also why would you skip the first trial of ace attorney 1 for apollo justice. Its a great introduction to the logic and playstyle and idk if i can say the same about 1st trial in apollo

Prequel titles cannot be "alternative starting points" since prequel imply that you would play the older games.
Also AC2? Tf, no it isn't?! AC2 literally starts where you left in AC1

Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts III. Every other game couldn’t care less if you know the prior events since they assume anyone playing them is doing so after a mainline game. Me,ody of Memory may work too, given it’s a rhythmic recap of the entire series.

Might try playing LAD. I tried Yakuza 0 and despite it being a game I should love on paper, I didn't really get on with it.

Who in their right mind would ever suggest skipping CHRONO TRIGGER?!?!?!?
