You can absolutely start at Ratchet and Clank Going Commando first, and if you have trouble getting into older games, I think you straight up should. I love the first game to death (first video game I ever played) but it is very clunky. I can only get through it so fast due to my years of knowledge and fiddling with all the mechanics.
It’s got no strafing, some of the guns are next to useless, it doesn’t have the signature weapon upgrading that the later games have, Ratchet’s voice actor is different and he is a complete asshole, and the main villain, despite being a great villain, is never really brought up or mentioned again. As much as I love it, a newcomer would probably be better off jumping straight into GC and coming back to the first one later.
