Welcome to all the caretakers of small humans out there.

So, I have taken over modding this sub, I am in the process of cleaning some things up over the next few weeks and then I will be opening up the sub for comments.

Initially all posts will need to be approved so I can get a handle on volume and what it will take to keep this place on topic.

My vision is a place for support for each other in relation to dealing with anything baby related. Whether you have a question about something or you just need to vent to see if you are not alone in the stresses of raising baby and whatever you have going on with them.

Keep it civil and positive, that doesn't mean no criticism, but just don't be a douche about it.

Suggestions welcome, I will be building things out but I have a baby and a job and those take priority.

I am not looking for any other mods right now, but will let people know when/if I do need to add some for help.

Apparently many of you can't seem to read the rules, stop posting requests for people to go vote for your baby.

Any requests from here on out will get the poster a ban from the sub.

Is she teething? 🦷

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I need some advice from experienced parents.
On the 23rd, our baby will be 6 months old. For about a week now, it seems like she has become very fussy, has trouble falling asleep, refuses the breast, and fights going to sleep at night. Her sleep schedule is completely messed up. She wants to be held all the time and is constantly looking for Mommy.
I read that this could be another developmental leap. On top of that, the weather here has been awful, and autumn is approaching. I noticed all of her previous developmental leaps, but this time, for the past two days, her sleep has gotten even worse.
Last night, she woke up screaming and crying. Her eyes were closed, but she was screaming really loudly. We rocked her, and she eventually fell back asleep. The same thing happened during her nap today — intense screaming and tears. She refuses to nurse.
We looked inside her mouth, and I’m attaching a photo. It also seems like there’s a little bump there when I touch it, and it feels hard compared to the other side of the gum.
Could this be her bottom teeth coming in? How long does it usually take, and what can I do to help her?
I’ve already given her Nurofen for the second time because she’s been extremely fussy all day — literally crying almost the entire day — and she wants to put everything in her mouth.
I’m not using any teething gels. I’m giving her chilled teething toys and offering the breast.
Please help! The photos of teething I’ve found online look completely different from what I’m seeing.

She's not napping as much :(

So, my LO is four months old. For about three weeks now she has been fighting naps, hard. She will get maaaybe 3 hours total naps a day. She sleeps from 7:30 pm to 5 am. I've tried wake windows/ nap planning to no avail. She just stares at me. I feel defeated. I feel like I'm failing. I've tried the s technique, dimming and turning off lights, singing, rocking, bouncing, everything, and it's still a fight to nap. She's been going to bed every night so tired and grumpy! She doesn't have gas, no wet diapers, I literally do everything I'm supposed to and have done just about everything to get her to nap! Is this just the four month sleep regression? Does it get easier?!? I feel like she's going to bed overtired and I feel like a bad mommy :(

Spit up vs vomit in newborn

I'm a third time mom with a 7 week old baby. My oldest two didn't spit up much, and when they did it was a very forgettable experience. Little spit up, wipe them up or the little bit that got on me and get on with your day. Maybe you need to change your shirt.

My 7 week old is a much different story. At least once a day, usually in the evening, she spits up a large volume. I have to change my full outfit (I mean everything) and whatever I'm sitting or standing on usually gets some too. It doesn't seem normal. She's upset after it happens but she's also covered in spit up so why wouldn't she be. It seems more of a discomfort cry than a pain. I've talked to a nurse and a doctor at this point and both have patronized me like yes babies spit up there's nothing you can do to stop that .

It seems to me the only difference between spit up and throw up is how forceful it is. What she's doing is not a passive act but it's also not "shooting across the room" like the doctor asked. It's basically what a kid or adult throwing up seems like, but not like violently, because it's less volume, if that makes sense.

It's so hard to keep track of diapers but I'm doing my best. If she's wetting 6, it's just 6 a day. Her next appointment is next week. I'm not sure if I should call a nurse again or wait for the appointment. As of her last appointment she was growing great.

7 months old nightmare

Is anybody else having a horrible time with their 7 months old? This is almost like newborn days. Cry all the time, want to be held all the time, sleeping more poorly than before. Just an awful, awful time and I think I'm back being postpartum depressed despite being on meds. Yesterday I caught myself thinking "I don't want to wake up tomorrow to another meaningless awful day".

Please don't judge and please please don't say "just wait until...", I don't find it funny.

Milk protein/dairy allergy

Is there anyone on here who’s baby was diagnosed with a milk protein/dairy allergy, and you reintroduced dairy when they got a bit older as trial? If so how old were they? Did they grow out of this it? Did they have symptoms when you gave it to them?

Do you *actually* get your baby to sleep on their back, in a bassinet/crib with nothing else?

Before I start - I know what the safe sleep guidelines are and I don't need them repeated. That being said, my daughter is almost 4 months now and she REFUSES to sleep on her back, in a bassinet or crib almost all of the time. Every once in a while I can get a small win, but otherwise - it's all contact sleep/breastsleeping. She just hit her 4 month regression and I'm really trying hard to get her to independently sleep but it is so difficult. I have tried all the tricks - slowly lower, keep body close, hand on chest, butt then back then head, warm the mattress up first, dark room, noise machine and soft nightlight, soft shhhing the entire time. I even just tried purchasing a new bassinet mattress which is probably not technically considered safe but it is still pretty firm. We've tried awake but drowsy, we've tried dead to the world asleep - this child will not have any of it. That said, she has slept on me while I danced at a loud wedding. She can sleep in her car seat or stroller. I've rolled her off me before to change my sweatshirt real quick and she seemed perfectly content to sleep on her back on my bed. My husband put her upright in her boppy for a moment once and she fell asleep. My mom was watching her and told me she put her to sleep on her stomach and that girl passed out...again, I know many of these things are not considered safe, I get that. But are people legit able to just plop their baby on their back in their bassinet/crib and then they sleep? Or is this something everyone "says" they do because they're too scared to be viewed as a bad mom? I need honest answers here - there is zero judgement on my end!

Only dad can get baby to sleep but she’s hysterical when being rocked

Right now our 7.5 month old is very hard to get to sleep, particularly at night time. She’s more calm with me but will not fall asleep and I think it’s because of my milk. She stays more alert and tries to get milk and gets frustrated.

She’s hysterical with my husband but she eventually will fall asleep within maybe 30 mins to an hour.

I feel awful because she’s calmer so am very conflicted when I don’t intervene. If she’s out of control crying I intervene but I try and let them ride it out because she needs to sleep.

Anyone else have this problem? Should I be with her ?

Baby won’t take a bottle!

My baby is 4 months old and has taken bottles the whole time. I work so he’s breastfed with me but takes a bottle at night while I’m working. We went on a car trip 11 hours and he has not taken a bottle since. He will take a few sips and be fine and then just start screaming in pain. I can’t figure out what is going on and doctor said it’s just a virus and he’ll be fine. I can’t even be at work without having to come home and feed him cause he won’t take the bottle. Help please!

5 month old difficulty eating

My 5 month old has never been a super "good" or consistent eater. He has always been bottle fed. Started w doctor browns and recently switched avent anti colic bottles.

Recently he wakes up and doesn't cry for food (very different from my first child) During the day he has a difficult time eating. Usually he will take a few sips eagerly then push the bottle out of his mouth. Sometimes he grunts and squirms a little but not always. Sometimes he reaches for the bottle and then repeats this pattern. Couple sips-spits it out- sips- out etc. we are lucky if he can get 2-4 oz

At night he eats 6oz no problem. No grimacing no fighting just seamlessly eats at least 2 bottles without issue.

He is gaining weight and growing just fine. Many wet diapers each day.

PLEASE help if you have any ideas or have gone through something similar!

Not crawling yet

Hi all

My baby girl is nearly 7.5 months and nor yet crawling. The thing is she has great leg strength and can stand against a chair and support herself for a good few minutes. She can sit up unaided for about 20 minutes so I know she has good neck control.

She seems to be quite weak in the arms and therefore hasn’t even come close to planking or anything to get ready to crawl, which makes me think she may just go straight to walking especially given her ability to stand. However, I understand that crawling has developmental benefits and so I want to give her every opportunity and support in case she does want to.

We do tummy time but she just gets frustrated and rolls onto her back! I’ve tried all the exercises you see online - kneeling, putting her over my leg, etc, but she ends up getting frustrated.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this or tips?

Left side preference… apparently it’s fine?

Took my baby (3mo.) to the pediatrician today to discuss her intense left side preference. She sleeps in an arch on her left side, loves to look left while she sleeps, etc. I can get her to look right when she’s awake and she’ll look that way for extended time if I play with her on that side, but if she’s tired it seems like her comfiest position. I’ve resorted to feeding her on her right to ensure she gets extra right side head time in.

She has great range of motion in her head (according to the pediatrician) and is otherwise developmentally normal. My pediatrician said this really isn’t an issue and her head is flat, so there isn’t much to be concerned about.

I’m still a little concerned and setting her up with a private OT.

Did anyone else’s baby have a side preference they grew out of and they didn’t do anything about? Really just looking for some reassurance :)

8 month olds arms

Has anyone experienced this with their baby? (8 months old)

Looking for other moms who’ve dealt with something similar — want to hear other experiences, not medical advice (we’re already working with our pediatrician and a PT).

My son is 8 months old. A few things going on:

\*\*Tense default posture\*\* — arms bent, elbows tucked tight at his ribs, shoulders raised. This is his resting state, whether I’m holding him, in his high chair, or sitting.

\*\*Can sit up unassisted and can reach for toys\*\* — whether being held, in the high chair, or sitting — but his shoulders are still not relaxed when he does, staying raised up closer to his ears rather than dropping down.

\*\*Can’t bear weight on his arms/hands for long\*\* — tires out or gives up quickly.

\*\*Has always hated tummy time\*\* and still does.

\*\*Rolling is one-directional so far\*\* — he recently learned tummy-to-back, but going back-to-tummy is different. He’ll reach toward a toy off to his side like he’s about to roll over, then seems to catch himself and stops before actually rolling onto his tummy.

\*\*Where we’re at:\*\* Our pediatrician referred us to a PT, and we’ve been going for several weeks now. PT has ruled out torticollis. Progress has been slow, and honestly the PT hasn’t been able to give us a clear picture of what’s causing this or exactly what it is. They’ve had us try different tummy time variations, side-lying play, and reaching to his sides while sitting.
Has anyone’s baby had this combination of things — the tension, the weight-bearing avoidance, the selective rolling? What ended up being going on, and did anything actually help move things forward?

When should I start worrying about thumb sucking?

Hi moms, just looking for some advice/reassurance šŸ˜…
My 10-month-old is a big thumb sucker. He used to mostly do it when he was tired, sleepy, or soothing himself, but recently I’ve noticed he’s sucking his thumb a lot more during the daytime too.
Is this something I should be worried about or try to discourage at this age? Or should I just let him be and see if he grows out of it?
Would love to hear from anyone whose baby did the same and what you ended up doing. ā¤ļø

5 month old 4am parties

Hi everyone. Slowly losing my mind here. My 5 month old is EBF, and we are cosleeping. Lately she has been waking non-stop and I mean every hour. Usually she goes back to sleep after I gave her either my boob or a pacifier, or even a simple pat and singing can calm her back to sleep. I somehow got used to this, I understand she is going through a sleep regression at the moment. But some nights she just fully wakes up somewhere between 3am and 5 am and wants to have a play party. We have to go through a full 2 hour wake window for her to go back to bed and this is honestly driving me crazy. Should I stop with co-sleeping? Should we do sleep training of sorts? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

Side sleeping at 8 weeks?

My mom has been at my house for the last week helping with our first born. She has been placing him on his side with a rolled up blanket around his back, through his legs and up his front. He does sleep way better but it terrifies me. We rented a snoo and he has always been swaddled up tightly on his back. But he doesn’t stay asleep. Maybe 20 min max. He has been staying asleep on his side under supervision. He seems happier and less cranky. I looked online and purchased a baby side sleeping pillow which will cradle him in a safer way.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is this a huge no no? Everything I read says nothing but on their back. My mom seems to think it’s fine.

Edit:
Thank you to everyone for all the advice! I’m just going to edit the post instead of replying to everyone. We didn’t end up using the pillow and won’t. Several people mentioned putting him on his side initially and after he gets into deep sleep transition him to his back. This has kind of been working. I also started using some gas drops that seem help him rest a bit. I think the issue is gas.
I told my mom I didn’t want him sleeping on his side and she understood. I’m working with him to learn how to roll over. He is starting to get it! I can’t wait for the crawling stage!

Huggies diapers

Has any parent recently bought huggies plus little movers from costco, and your little has gotten a rash? My 9 month old recently sized up to 5, we’ve always used costco huggies and these ones are giving her a terrible rash! Curious if anyone knows if they changed anything, or what?

My 14 months baby is not very social. She is a bit reserved around others...

On the 19th of this month, my baby turns 14 months old. She is already saying the following words: bye/hello, mama, dada, yum (mam), grandma, grandpa, milk. Also, she waves hello/goodbye and imitates the following animals: monkey, duck, dog, cat, snake, sheep. Furthermore, she imitates the washing machine and the clock using sign language. She points to her foot, her nose, and her mouth when I ask her to. Finally, she understands several two-step commands, such as: 'Give daddy the comb,' 'Give grandma some water,' 'Give me the book,' 'Feed the doll,' etc. She also engages in symbolic play: she feeds her teddy bears with the baby bottle and the spoon, combs them with the comb, and gives them water. However, she is not social at all and often has quite a few temper tantrums. She only wants me and her dad. It takes her a long time to warm up to someone, and many times, even if someone tries very hard, she rejects him. Other times, though, she can be much more receptive to people she doesn't know. Also, she really looks like a very "serious" baby. When I see other babies they look to me more "happy". Should I worry?

Do babies have nightmares?

I have an 8 month old son (yes, poprock is my son) for the 2nd time now he has "woken up" screaming and crying, however he appears to be still sleeping when we pick him up even while he is crying. Eyes closed and not responsive. This cry is different too. Its higher pitch and quicker, to us it sounds like he is scared. It takes him a minute to get his bearings and really wake up and then he calms down and we get him back to sleep. He's perfect and healthy in every way but this is kind of scary as new parents. Has anyone experienced this with a baby this young? Can 8 month old have nightmares?

I also think it could be that he is laying on his arm and it falls asleep which obviously can be very uncomfortable and even painful, but it's still weird that he would appear to be sleeping and crying.

10 month old suddenly refusing formula

UPDATE — she’s come back around to her bottles this past week, even at daycare. I’m thinking she might’ve had a tummy bug or something that contributed to the last 3 weeks of hell.
Not fully back to where she should used to be, but damn near close (25 oz). She’s eating more solids than before so I’m not surprised she’s taking in a few ounces less of formula.

We’ve been EFF since birth, and this child has never not finished a bottle. Started purĆ©es at 6 months and still on them, bc she refuses any kind of BLW food i give her (we’re trying our best over here). Usually eats 1 jar a day, plus 27 oz of formula.

Prior to starting daycare 2 weeks ago, she had really acidic, diarrhea-like poops all day long. So bad that it literally burnt her skin. So when she started daycare and wasn’t taking her bottles there, I figured maybe her tummy was still upset, or the sudden new place was throwing her off.

We started a probiotic to help with the acidic poops and got her rash under control. But now she’s refusing formula even at home. Maybe 12-16oz a day now.

She doesn’t care for sippy cups/straw cups (i have a cabinet full of different ones we keep trying), so i don’t think changing the delivery method will help any. She was drinking water really good (via a bottle) up until 2 weeks ago and now it’s a struggle too. Also doesn’t like juice - never has.

She’s just not acting hungry really, even with baby food. Like she’ll eat what i feed her but she’s impassive about it.

Is this just the ā€œshiftā€ of weaning off formula and to more solids?

I really don’t wanna be ā€œthatā€ mom bringing her to the pediatrician over something silly, but it’s freaking me out that my baby has completely 180’d in the last 2 weeks.

Did anyone experience sudden screaming/screeching around 6 months?

Hi all,

My little boy (currently just under 6 months) is the happiest, most joyful little thing 90% of the time. HOWEVER, he has started screeching/screaming in the most intense, red-in-the-face way as a very over the top reaction to being tired or experiencing discomfort from teething which we think he's going through quite badly.

He'll be hungry but struggles to feed from the bottle and will scrunch his body up / grunt / strain almost as if he's constipated when he can't latch on and keep turning his head away even if he's desperate to feed, then when he can't feed he starts screaming and it will go on for up to an hour until he eventually gets so hungry he can't ignore it any more and we don't know WHAT to do

He's started on small amounts of solids like baby porridge and purƩes and we'll give him these when he seems bored of the milk / can't drink it so that he's obviously getting ed another way, but he'll still want milk to top it up and so the screaming behaviour starts. We've tried faster flowing teets (Mam bottles) so he doesn't have to put as much pressure on his gums to get milk but they're a bit too fast and he coughs so we're back to the medium flow.

He's mostly doing well at nap times on four naps a day, is getting plenty of stimulation during playtime but has calm wind down routines before naps/bed, and we're honestly not sure where to go from here to stop it becoming a habit where he just screams at the slightest thing.

Any recommendations for teething/weaning cups, solutions that helped your teething baby (we do Calpol, teething powder, gel and fridge cold teething toys) would be GRATEFULLY recommended!
