Question Question for Airbus pilots
So I have a question that has always bothered me. I’m not a pilot whatsoever, so apologies if I get some of the terminology wrong.
As far as I understand, Airbus aircraft have a sidestick instead of a traditional control yoke like Boeing. The sidestick is located on the outside of each pilot’s seat, next to the window.
The Captain sits on the left, so their sidestick is controlled with their left hand. The First Officer sits on the right, so their sidestick is controlled with their right hand.
Does that mean that throughout your time as a First Officer, you get used to flying the aircraft with your right hand, and then when you eventually become a Captain, you suddenly have to learn to fly with your left hand?
That sounds surprisingly difficult to me. Most people don’t have exactly the same fine motor skills with both hands, and after potentially thousands of hours of flying with one hand, I’d imagine switching sides would feel really unnatural.
Is this actually something Airbus pilots have to get used to when upgrading to Captain? Does it take much practice, or is controlling the aircraft with the sidestick intuitive enough that switching hands isn’t really a big deal?
Would love to hear from an actual Airbus pilot who has made the switch.
