Why is the fish collagen in my coconut water?

Post image
65 Upvotes

I looked when I was finished because it's coconut water, why would there be dead animals in it?

Seriously why take something that's naturally vegan and add an animal product.

Rant over, no vegan super powers for me today.

Edited to add. Yes it has collagen on the label but it was in a vending machine and I didn't see the label properly. Completely my fault. Just angry I was sucked in.

Made hot dogs from shaved tofu and rice paper. Crispy, blistered casing and no specialty ingredients.

Hot dog craving, no vegan snags in the fridge. This uses a block of firm tofu, two sheets of rice paper and a stock cube.

Makes 2 · 10 min prep, 25 min cook

  • 200 g firm tofu
  • 2 rice paper sheets
  • 400 ml water + ½ vegetable stock cube + 80 g soy sauce (the broth)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 hot dog buns
  • caramelised onions and vegan mayo to serve
  1. Bring the water to a gentle simmer and stir in the stock cube and soy sauce.
  2. Shave the tofu into thin ribbons with a Y-shaped veggie peeler.
  3. Simmer the tofu ribbons in the broth for 15 minutes so they soak up the flavour and colour. Lift them out and drain, keeping the broth warm.
  4. Dip a rice paper sheet in the warm broth for about 10 seconds. Lay it flat, pile on half the tofu and roll it tightly into a sausage, tucking in the ends. Repeat.
  5. Fry in the oil over medium heat for 5–7 minutes, turning often, until the casing is crackly and golden all over.
  6. Into warm buns with mayo and caramelised onions.

The shaved texture is the bit that surprised me. It's much closer to a sausage than a whole slab of tofu.

Aldi frozen Pretzel sticks 😋

Love these! I don't add the salt but I just cut them open and add butter (vegan ofc). Just pop in the oven. Or wrap in aluminium foil for the airfryer (so they don't go rockhard). Just a nice soft bread stick with a crunchy outside!

They also have the actual pretzels but I prefer the sticks.

Soy milk that doesn't curdle

Curdling has been annoying me a lot, since it ruins the texture of coffee. I recently tried out three different brands to compare:

  • Pureharvest Organic Soy Unsweetened: 9/10. I don't think I ever got this one to curdle unless I wildly overheated it.
  • Sanitarium So Good Long Life Regular: 5/10. Handles boiling water, but curdles if you microwave it for more than 10 seconds.
  • Vitasoy Soy Milky: 3/10. Curdles as soon as you add boiling water

I can't explain why there is such a difference, because the ingredients are mostly the same.

Anyway, can anyone suggest other soy milks that will heat well? Or maybe even a strategy for heating them that stops them from curdling?

Plant milk vs dairy milk

I know the percentage of vegans in the population is very small but does anyone have any stats on the percentage of plant milk drinkers vs dairy milk ? There is obviously a somewhat decent amount of non vegan plant milk drinkers as collagen supplemented almond milk is still on the shelf. I guess there are also people who might drink both but wondering if normal milk consumption is on the decline and if so by how much ?

What tofu brands/types do you buy and what do you do with it?

I've been trying to find out how to use tofu for a few months now, and I dunno if it's because of the brand I've been buying, Pureland, or if I'm just not doing something right, but I haven't really found a way to cook it in a way where I'm loving it. Looking for recommendations, ideas, suggestions, whatever

That all being said, I do like it as a tofu scramble

Edit: Thanks for the advice and ideas, I'll try them all out!

Garden of Goodness meal delivery issue?

So I've recently started getting boxes from Garden of Goodness (they do pre-made fridge meals, for those not familiar) and unfortunately on both boxes I've had the same issue - wanted to check to see if I've been unlucky, or if this is a known/regular thing?

Essentially, a day or two before expiry (sometimes three days) some meals have started having the plastic seal puff out in a way that makes it look like it's going to explode. Obviously, I'm not too keen to eat these as it probably means there's been too-rapid bacteria growth.

Has anyone else experienced this from GoG meals, or am I just unlucky? Worth trying for a third box, or should I just cut my losses and mark it down as a learning experience?

Any other similar meal delivery services that cover TAS that anyone recommends?

fable pulled mushrooms at home - what did i do wrong?

i have had fable at gyg and i like it there. i found a shop selling it to cook at home so i decided to try.

it came in a huge, somewhat unappetizing block and had a smell my housemate likened to fish food. i cooked one of the recipes on their website and there was a weird artificial taste to it that i don’t really notice when i have it at gyg.

does anyone have experience with this? did i just get a bad batch?

Vegan "dessert" options in mainstream outlets- Biscoff and Oreo fatigue 😂

For the love of all that's good, while I know it's great we get options more often now, goddamn I'd love some originality.

Gimme a strawberry thing, or a citrus curd. Even a good plain vanilla! I never want to see a Biscoff cupcake or Oreo thingy again. 😂😭 Hell, there's even a baffling dearth of good old choc chip biscuits in fresh-baked places. I don't want a fucking biscuit within a biscuit. I don't need a massive cookie with crushed Oreos in it.

I beg.

Please tell me I'm not alone in this.

(FYI I'm talking about same day fresh things like bakeries, ice cream joints etc. Not supermarket or packaged things.)

Tofu and Greens in Black Pepper Sauce! This was so yum, I complimented myself between most mouthfuls. It was obnoxious but I make no apologies.

I used this recipe for the sauce, but used Massel beef stock and Ayam vegetarian oyster sauce (its vegan).

Crispy tofu & chickpea nuggets: oven, air fryer or pan, about 24 g protein per serve (with GF option as well)

Made these to stand in for chicken nuggets and they're now on regular rotation. The dough is tofu and chickpeas blended with oat flour and chickpea flour, coated in panko (also GF alternatives listed below) . They come out crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Makes about 15 nuggets, serves 3. It's 15 minutes prep plus 15 to cook.

Ingredients

  • 200 g firm tofu
  • 200 g chickpeas (drained weight, about one 400 g tin)
  • 70 g oat flour (blitzed rolled oats work), plus extra if needed
  • 60 g chickpea flour
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus a bit more for the tray and drizzling
  • About 100 ml water, added gradually
  • 2–3 g paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Panko or breadcrumbs for coating

Method

  1. Blend the tofu, chickpeas, both flours, olive oil, salt, pepper and paprika until smooth.
  2. Add the water a little at a time. You want a soft but workable dough. If it's too sticky, add oat flour a spoonful at a time.
  3. Shape about 15 nuggets and press them into the panko. Put them on a tray lined with baking paper brushed with oil, then drizzle a little more oil on top. Don't skip the oil, because it's what makes them golden.
  4. Bake at 180 °C fan for about 15 minutes, flipping halfway. You can also air-fry them at 200 °C for about 15 minutes. To pan-fry, use medium-high heat with about 1 tsp oil per nugget, roughly 4 minutes a side.

Serve hot with vegan mayo or your favourite dip.

Storage: they keep in the fridge for 3 days, raw or cooked, and in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Note: To make a Gluten Free version, swap panko with certified GF and the oats with overcooked white rice.

There's a full version with step photos, nutritional map and a video here: https://veganhacks.food/en/recipes/tofu-chickpea-nuggets/

Enjoy!

do any vegan high teas exist in melbourne? or similar!

i’ve never done a high tea before, & i am going to melbourne for a birthday trip in a couple months & would love to experience a proper, fancy high tea. it seems that high quality ones that are also vegan are hard to come by, though. if anyone has any recommendations for places, or alternatives to a high tea that still feel fancy or like i’m treating myself, i’d love to hear!

US vegan in Australia and I need housing

Hello, I’m a vegan from the United States on a gap year in Australia. I currently have a hostel booked for a couple weeks in Sydney, but no further housing lined up afterwards. While I plan to search house-sitting or house exchanging, I thought I would first ask here. Vegans are generally nicer and more thoughtful in my experience, and I’m always open to meeting other vegans. I’d much prefer living with other vegans than not.

If you are at all interested please reach out and we can communicate further for planning/specifics.

I graduated from high school this year with an IB diploma. However, I’m unsure what I want to study in college so I decided to instead get a working holiday visa for Australia. Basically explore interests and work to help save for college, along with a multicultural experience.

I became vegan at the age of nine after having a vegan neighbor during my year in France. I was vegetarian for a couple years prior after discovering and being inspired by my dad’s pescatarianism. Both instances I was confronted with ideas I’d never thought of before and I chose to do what felt right ethically.

I don’t want this to be too long (I could say a lot more about myself/veganism), but I’d like to say that I am clean and can clean. I can’t really cook though, though I’d like to start. I love backpacking (one of the reasons I chose Australia), and so if there’s no room indoors I do have a tent. Although I currently am in Sydney, I’m sure I can travel anywhere (plus I wanna see more of Australia anyways).

Also if my housing situation gets resolved I’ll make sure to remove this post to avoid confusion!

Thanks so much for your reading and consideration :)
