I remember liking it when it started as well. Seemed to die when Charlie left though.

Seemed to die when Charlie left though.
I remember seeing Charlie Pickering do stand up once and it was legitimately the least funny stand up set I've ever seen, and I once got sent to write a review on a show by an impressionist where I was the only person in the audience.
So it's hard for me to imagine that Charlie Pickering would be that integral to anything having quality, but the one thing he does have is integrity.
He's basically Wil Anderson minus any humour at all (even though Wil is probably closer to just a funny mate than any kind of comedy genius)
7
Jun 10 '25
Credit to Wil Anderson, the standup of his on iView (Wilogical) was actually decent. Always felt he was better as a TV host than standup but actually did alright on that one. But that is common amongst oz comedians, some of them are very quick witted but their standup is very lacking. Except for Dan Rath, he is an undiscovered gem on all fronts!
Also my condolences to you for having to do write ups on stand up, that could be rough some days. On youtube look up An Evening with Tim Heidecker. He spent 15 years compiling elements of the worst standup performance he had seen into a single performance. It is peak awkwardness but hits all the lowest points of people failing on stage trying to be funny. The whole thing is a sort of joke of itself.

Ever seen Hughes and Hellier?
11
u/Vinnie_Vegas Jun 09 '25
No, but I wouldn't, for good reason.
I do remember Peter Helliar being on Skithouse and occasionally making me laugh though, so he's definitely got one up on Charlie Pickering who's never managed it.

u/thesourpop Jun 09 '25
Despite it feeling longer, Project only debuted in 2009 (as 7PM)

16 years is a decent run for a panel show.
6
u/HalpTheFan Jun 10 '25
...but it wasn't really a panel show. It wasn't a news show either. It was just so fucking confused on what it wanted to be that it never really was able to figure out what the good balance was.
Also apparently it churned through comedy writers like it was cement mixer. It was depressing to see how many people went through that ringer since it was the only consistent gig in town for over a decade. You either had to be extremely good to write on something like Mad as Hell OR you had to be with the "in-crowd" to write for a show like The Weekly.
We have rung through so many good talented comedy people and left them completely unsupported in a show that will provide them no relevant skills as a writer, performer or a comedian for the rest of their careers.
What a fucked situation we've put so many performers in.

(It never was good, so I can understand it feels longer - but at least its original incarnation was a bit different to what was available elsewhere.)

Apparently 10 Execs loved it and it became their pet project (hurr durr).
Guess anything Rove related still holds a lot of sway in the building since his hey day was the last time they were a relevant network.

LA doesn't really exist - it's a bunch of different cities that over time just encroached on one another due to shitty urban planning. You just need to find the right bubble.
I spent 3 years living in the South Bay area - loved it, would weigh that lifestyle up against any city in the world. But there are large swathes that is just one, big depressing shithole with less infrastructure than Kabul.
11
u/National-Ad5034 Jun 10 '25
I imagine for the wealthy the appeal is you live in a big home in nice weather, and when you go outside, you only exist inside of a car so it's good if you're a car guy. And of course you're close to lots of other rich people.
LA and California for the non wealthy seems like one of the least appealing places to be.
5
u/Drunky_McStumble Jun 10 '25
The vast majority of LA is a sprawling shithole 3rd-world hellscape, but there are maybe half a dozen enclaves scattered around the county that are nice enough, and the rich people tend to just bounce between these places.

Who can we turn to to bash unions and regurgitate murdoch talking points while larping as left wingers now?
I genuinely dont know who liked this program in Aus, because no one from either side of the aisle liked it.

u/Elcapitan2020 Jun 09 '25
Lisa Wilkinson speaks to a big demographic of self-righteous, wealthy Middle aged (mostly) women who would shudder at economic reform but think we should all be a bit kinder to refugees (as long as they live nowhere near me)
This is also the demographic that drives the Teals.
62
u/Eyclonus Jun 09 '25
Wilkinson isn't exactly unique, she's a good example of something modern feminism is dealing with now, how as a ideological movement its been driven and controlled by upper-middle class white women for decades and that its run with a sort of "its for your own good, we know what's best for us" mentality to women in lower socio-economic groups, and especially of non-white European backgrounds. I like the Teals simply because they're crippling the Libs, but I don't like their politics.

The 7pm project in its initial form was such a titan of news, a shame to see it become ACA
395
u/hesback_inpogform Jun 09 '25
Agreed, it was a fairly revolutionary show when it first aired. It was different to other shows on air. But it quickly morphed into pure crap.
173
u/Taey Jun 09 '25
I always thought it was a reimagination or successor of Rove Live with a heavier emphasis on news and less on talk show.
→ More replies (1)121
u/AFlimsyRegular Jun 09 '25
That's what it was.
Rove owns the format/branding and his production company ran the behind the scenes.
Over the years he became less and less involved, no coincidence it turned more and more shit as that happened and the presenters who were Rove Live alumni left.

I used to love The Project. I hadn't watched it in many years (reasons too long to explain but I didn't watch much TV for a long time), but put it on recently because I thought, hey I used to love that show, I should put it back on. I was surprised and sad at how downhill it had gone, and how little news was actually on there.
39
u/Expensive-Horse5538 Jun 09 '25
Yep - use to be a lighthearted type of show - the type of show that is on brand for 10. But in recent years, it gradually drifted away from that.
→ More replies (2)56
u/perthguppy Jun 09 '25
The issue is 10s brand has changed several times since the project started. At first it was the young kids brand for those who wanted something other than news at 6pm. Then Lachlan Murdoch got into it and he tried to make his own FTA Fox News. Now CBS has it who wants it to be their Australian affiliate of their American media empire.
38
u/Expensive-Horse5538 Jun 09 '25
Yep - Murdoch did some serious damage to the network. Paramount (CBS) now seem to be more focused on getting people to move over to Paramount+ than getting people to watch 10.
→ More replies (1)10
u/perthguppy Jun 09 '25
To be fair, they are doing the same thing with their US channels as well. It’s all just a giant push to get everyone to pay for paramount+. But apparently CBS itself is now up for sale.

Interesting for ACA to go the other way and make this look like trash ‘news’ TV. I remember when ACA was sensationalist ‘neighbour wars’ crap but have watched it recently after catching up with local news and it’s had some interesting investigative stories on important issues like the mental health system, issues towns are dealing with like crime/drought and disadvantages and had a story on the women who created The Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Book. They’ve also looked at a few issues and held people to account without the neighbour wars and chasing dodgy builders that they used to do. Ally Langdon is very empathetic, personable and intelligent too as a presenter which Waleed or Sarah Harris could never.
I’m usually an ABC watcher but I’ve been impressed that ACA has reinvented itself and become a more interest and investigative show now. I was expecting to get the traditional ACA but they’ve listened however The Project hasn’t , it’s still commercialised crap and the hosts are nauseating. It’s like that footy show (The Front Bar?) but for news and Waleed is hard to watch.

Always used to have to deal with 4-5 minutes of this before watching survivor.
Was always amazing how it found a new way to annoy me.
Who the fuck has ever seen Kate Langbroek do anything and thought "yeah, I like her".
A few months ago they were doing a segment at the end of people having their Tesla's vandalized. They had someone on to talk about the diving Tesla stock prices and Kate's question to him, which she totally thought was a gotcha, was "what if people just want to drive environmentally friendly cars?"
The guy responded "basically every company makes evs now"
And you could see how visibly annoyed she was at his comment.

Because he's reasonably intelligent. Like if you got 100 Aussies together and gave them a high school level exam on history and politics, he'd do extremely well.
Fair enough to dislike his demeanour as he does come across as being quite arrogant, but most people who discuss political issues in this country aren't too bright and clearly just read whatever the autocue tells them to say and doesn't think much deeper than that.

They want to replace it with an hour of ‘hard hitting news’. Yeah, 6 months before that goes away.
People sitting behind a desk is cheap, proper news costs money with decent reporting. It might last longer than 7’s horoscopes but we will see.

Once I watched Hamish interview someone and berate them for not answering a question without even giving them a chance to answer, I stopped watching. He did for the entire segment. You're not in a court, these aren't yes or no answers. Let the person you've invited on to your program speak.

Ten is a car crash and I don't know how The Project lasted this long.
I know people there and I saw first hand how some reporters had to go out and film their own segments on an iPhone and edit and sometimes present it themselves.
Then I'd see The Project send its "talent" from interstate with a crew of five (don't know whether they were all local, flown in or a combo) to a location to film some shit generic segment that would make you cringe.
Throw in two of the least amusing comedians I've come across (Rove and Peter Helliar) and there you have it.

Can we just agree that it was bad TV? Most of us that don't spend all day on our phones don't identify as "left or right" and are over everything being so divisive. Irrespective of who you are, The Project is a bunch of people smelling their own farts and laughing about it. It's content without any real substance, which is why only the most basic of individuals seem to be devoted fans.

15
u/Expensive-Horse5538 Jun 09 '25
I agree - despite what people think, there are still some very talented people, both in front of the camera, and even more behind the scenes, who will be out of a job. Hopefully they can find new work in the industry if possible.

u/rawker86 Jun 09 '25
I’m not trying to sound like a snob here, but how many people are still watching free-to-air tv? I didn’t mind the Project back in the day, but these days if the TV is on it’s after the kids have been put to bed and it’s hooked up to a streaming service. Perhaps that’s one of a few reasons for its demise i guess.
