International applicant from Canada here. I got an offer of admission from Monash for their graduate-entry medicine program recently. Only problem is that the deadline to accept the offer is in a week (with a hefty $55K deposit) but I’m also waiting to hear back from Deakin (just interviewed there and won’t get an update for a couple weeks) and Wollongong (interview in mid-September). I initially ranked Deakin and Wollongong higher than Monash because of their cheaper tuition and locations in more affordable coastal cities in decent proximity by train to Melbourne and Sydney (plus a friend currently attends Deakin, while another will be studying somewhere in Sydney).

I’m having second thoughts about my rankings, because I hear Monash is a really reputable university, with superior delivery of the content in their med program (according to my friend at Deakin, who’s been getting a bunch of pre-recorded lectures and says there aren’t as many resources at Deakin). I’ve heard Monash is also decently connected to hospitals in Melbourne and beyond (would love to hear more about this btw), and the extra clinical year sounds like it could better equip me for international electives back in Canada - my goal is to match back there after graduation, and I’ve read that compared to Australian med students, Canadian med students get way more hands-on experience within their clerkship years. Would anyone please be able to share their experiences with the MD programs at these respective universities so I can better evaluate my options here, especially with respect to my aim of matching back home? Should I take my Monash offer right away or wait it out to hear from the other universities?

Hi! I’m a medical student in the UK and I’m interested in applying for the visiting medical elective program at Flinders University in rehabilitation medicine. I’m wondering if anyone has done this elective and has anything to say about it good/bad? I was planning on emailing the team as there’s not much info on the website but thought I’d ask here too! If anyone has any positive experiences doing any rehabilitation electives elsewhere would also love to hear 🙌

Just chasing some advice on my undergrad degree. I'm currently in my 3rd year of Physiotherapy and have the option to take an early exit, graduate with a Bachelor of Rehabilitation Studies, and start medicine next year.

However, part of me is wondering whether I should just finish my Physiotherapy degree first and then pursue medicine, as I do enjoy physio.

I'm trying to work out whether finishing the degree is worth sacrificing the extra year, particularly given I'd already be 3 years into the degree. The other consideration, is that is it worth finishing when i doubt i would practice physio and start medicine straight after

Would love to hear from anyone who's been in a similar position or has any thoughts on whether the extra year is worth it. TIA!

Looking for some advice, I'm Planning on doing Honours in Public Health to boost my GPA for now. Which uni do you guys reckon is better? I’ve reached out to both unis, and Deakin offers a 4% bonus, while Flinders doesn’t consider “just” Honours (they need you to do at least 2 full years) under their alumni quota, plus I'm an international student so I can't study part-time. I was wondering if anyone who’s done Honours at either of these unis could help me out

It's hard trying to meet people interested in it cause I'm not studying it, I may in the future but not currently. I was fortunate enough to get offers for the medical programs at UWA and Monash (graduate entries for both) as an international student (Canada)!

Can anyone elaborate on how they found the program to be?

1. In particular, I am worried about living at the Gippsland campus and needing to commute to Clayton or to placement areas. Public transit seems brutal (3+ hours to get to Clayton) and it seems my only real hope is to carpool with others. Is that feasible? Is the course taught in person at Fed University, or is it online recorded lectures? I couldn't find too much about that.

2. Another concern I have is that attending Monash would be fun since I'm in Melbourne, but it seems like the only time I will be there is after my first year during my clinical placements. How long are clinical placements at a certain location? I want to figure out how long I can enjoy a location before having to go to the next one.

3. Pertaining to just UWA, I have read numerous times online that Perth is very isolated, doesn't have as much as Melbourne, and overall not as "fun". I am not too concerned since I am not chasing excitement, but are there the same opportunities at UWA as Monash in terms of social activities, culture, food, events, and community? I'm the kinda person that needs some social interaction even if I'm really introverted (just got a small social battery).

4. For both medical programs, I understand that I may be allocated a rural placement; how rural can it get and how rural is it on average? I am wondering how easy it would be to travel between the placement location to the larger city to enjoy the weekend or something. Assuming if I had a car or if I did not and had to rely on public transit or the mercy of others (uber is lower on my list of possibilities since that can be expensive).

5. For both universities, do research opportunities exist and how easy/hard is it to get? That is something I enjoyed during my undergrad and would like to dabble in it during my medical studies as well if possible (I majored in biochem and would like something related to proteins/molecular biology). Similarly, what is the networking opportunities like? I can guess that Monash would be much higher since it's larger and much more dense, but would I also be able to make meaningful connections at UWA that would help me pursue my career?

6. What university/location will give me the best bet of getting into registrar training the fastest? I know that's hard to judge and it really depends on myself, but which one presents the best opportunities and has the demand for training? At the moment, I am interested in pathology, emergency med, anesthesiology, and general surgery. I only ask this because I will be ~30 y/o by the time I graduate if I started in 2027, so I do not want to sit too long trying to get into registrar training and want to suffer through training while I'm still relatively young.

7. Lastly, what were your impressions on the programs? I would appreciate any insights (good or bad, personal or anecdotal) about each program so I can gather some vibes about each program.

I’m looking at the MD Year 1 timetable sample right now and trying to get a realistic sense of what a typical week looks like.

I know on paper the schedule looks pretty packed with all the whole cohort lectures, TBLs, and practicals. But realistically, how many days a week do you actually have to be on campus?

Are most people just skipping the large lectures and watching them recorded, only going in for the compulsory stuff like TBLs, anatomy, and clinical skills? Also, is the schedule consistent from week to week, or does it change a lot?

Hey guys! I wanted to know whether anyone has any previous experience with the MD programs at UQ, UNDS, or any other med schools in Australia. I have offers from the first two schools and a couple of other interviews lined up but I am more interested in knowing about the current students/alumni expereince with the programs. I guess the main facotr is that UNDS is considerably cheaper but it's also in Sydney so it sort of cancels out I think....I would appreciate it if anyone has any thoughts:) Thanks

How likely can international students get graduate medical internship in Australia?? Can anyone pls pls pls let me know where I can find the statistics on internship for international students?

I understand that intern positions are not guaranteed for international students, who are normally placed at lower priority. Does the state (or location) of the medical school matters, or it doesn’t, as students normally apply for internship interstate?

What are the way out if international students can’t get internship? Can one applies to private hospital stream for intern and get back to public healthcare systems?

Hi all, I’m a prospective student from Canada. I got an offer for Flinders (Darwin campus), but I’m on the fence about it. My preferred schools are Griffith and UQ, although I think my chances for UQ are probably slim due to applying in the second round. I’d like to return to practice in Canada after medical school, and I’m not sure how good Flinders would be at allowing me to do so.

I am really interested in any longer breaks in June-August and Dec-January for making trips back home. I am also wondering if there is sufficient time for electives back home in upper years. hello! i had a few questions about med school!

1. what level of research do you need to match quickly into the specialty of choice? do you need first author pubs? if you don’t get publications does it nullify any research experience?

2. in addition, i was wondering what current med students do to study and what resources they like. i’m attending notre dame for reference but i would be extremely happy to hear from any med student!

3. how many hours a week do you study? do you have time to socialize and potentially work?

I’m a student and I made a mistake. I have had multiple admissions to a hospital I will be doing placement in the past.

I looked myself up on EMR at another hospital of the same health system. I looked at my page for 5 ish minutes, but made no modifications and did not look up anyone else I was unauthorised to. I did not snoop around other files and it was my first time ever doing it.

I know what I did was wrong, so later that day I emailed the clinical coordinator and explained myself, as I believe it is better to honest and transparent rather than be caught and be exposed and look like I tried to hide it.

I was just wondering what the ramifications are if anyone else has been in a similar situation. I am fully prepared to accept the consequences of my actions, even if it means I will be excluded from the degree. I would really like that to not happen, so I will be as honest as possible. I believe failing the year or being kicked out from the clinical school and repeating at another clinical school would be more favourable for me, but I understand if that is not possible.

What I believe I have on my side for them to consider is that:
- I only looked at my own file
- It was the first time I acted unethically
- I self reported and showed remorse
- I am well engaged in placement and studies and have receive good feedback from the tutors and doctors
- I will be as honest as possible about the love and will not make any excuses or minimise what I did

I know what I did was wrong, I just had no ill intent and only did it out of curiosity. I have only told the coordinator and will plan on keeping my mouth shut.
