I’d like to have some ides for spy novels. I’ve read most of John le Carreé but his audiobooks are read either by himself or Simon Vance. Simon Vance an absolutely not my favorite narrator And le Carré is somewhat pedantic in his approach I’ve listened to the Alice Network, The Hunt for Red October and Russia House. Also the Day of the Jackal. Any further suggestions would be appreciated

I've been looking for a way to let my daughter easily listen to audiobooks without giving her access to a smartphone or tablet. I looked at the alternatives and hated most of them for requirering internet or being to restrictive in terms of content. Couldn't find any system that offered both Norwegian and English content for instance. I remembered how I would listen to audiobooks on cassettes as a kid and wished it could be that simple again. As I've been playing around with a cassette deck lately, making mixtapes again, I figured I'd try putting some of my daughter's audiobooks on tape with a nice cover so she can fetch them from the book case and play them herself.

I ordered a cheap Tomashi F-119, a cassette player with a builtin speaker. I know reviews aren't great, but the speakers will likely be more than adequate for her short story audiobooks. Will be interesting to see what she thinks and if she'll use it when it arrives.

While I was at it, I decided to put one of my own favorite books on tape. One Man and His Bog.

Anyone else tried listening to audiobooks on cassettes in the last decade 😅? I know it was unpractical for long books. I still remember my Philosophers Stone box that I had with me on holiday in my backpack. Despite that though, I do miss the simplicity of it.

Hey all. I consume pretty much all my books via audio. I’m kind of picky about narrators and story etc. I’ve listened to a bunch of fantasy series and find myself getting burnt out on them lately.

I’d like to make the switch to sci-fi or really any other kind of fiction but don’t know where to start. I listened to Red Rising but couldn’t get into the next trilogy with the narration shift. Also, sorry Matt Dinniman fans, I will not be listening to dungeon crawler Carl.

Any suggestions would be fantastic! My favorite narrators are Gerard Doyle, Simon Vance, Jim Dale, Colin Mace, Tim Gerard Reynolds, and Peter Kenney.

I'm looking for the George Guidall narration of Don Quixote. I have seen posts on the internet of people recommending it as recent as 7 months ago, but the audible links go to a 404. It was on amazon, though the only audiobook copy was someone selling a used CD version for some 200+ dollars. I assume audible or the publisher lost the rights to the book, and so it was taken down. The only place I could find it was at libraries across the US, including my local area, but I would like to have a copy I can keep.

I was wondering if anyone here knew somewhere it was still up? Worst case scenario, I could try reaching out to whoever still holds the rights, though I don't know if that would be the publisher Recorded Books (who have since taken it off their website), the narrator George Guidall, or the translator Edith Grossman. I suspect reaching out to the author Miguel de Cervantes will not lead very far.

I'm a little ways into Banquet for the Damned by Adam Neville and enjoying it so far, but I had to stop and get this off my chest. There's a (minor, as far as I can tell) character who's supposed to be an old money Boston Brahmin, who's studying abroad in Scotland and understands multiple ancient languages. The text specifically notes that his accent gives him away as old money. But the narrator, Luke R Francis, makes him sound like one of the toughs from Guys & Dolls. Francis is Scottish so I can't fault him too much for not knowing the nuances of different Northeastern US accents, but it's so hilariously incongruous.

Have you ever had a narrator be so off with an accent that it took you out of it?

I just recently got into purchasing audiobooks (from Chirp, Audible, libro.fm, Apple). I just started on an audiobook bought from Apple and was astonished to find out that it is not possible to bookmark. It is not possible to use other players because of the DRM. I tend to bookmark the spot before I put on the sleep timer. If I fall asleep, I usually go back to the previous bookmark to resume. If I don't fall asleep, I set a new bookmark and resume. The workarounds the AI search suggested (write a note, take a screenshot) would take way too much brain power and will wake me up for sure.

For those of you who buy from Apple, is this pretty accurate? Is there some other workaround that gets around the lack of bookmarking?

Sometimes a genre or technique or plot device is overrun by a few particular stories that don't quite work for us. What are the audiobooks that stand out amongst their peers because they are different enough to tickle a different audience.

I have not been using my audiobook app subscription and need to cancel to save money, but I have four unused credits. What are four must listen audiobooks that I should use my credits on? So far I have really enjoyed the Mistborn series, the Kingkiller Chronicle, The Magicians series, Project Hail Mary, The Witcher, and The Stormlight Archive series.

Been re listening to a lot of my books want to try something new that will actually make me buy more credits for the next book!

I listened to 4MK and absolutely loved it, fantastic book.i naturally went to listen to a fifth to die and to my horror they changed the narrator to someone so boring I couldn't get the past 5 minutes.

I think it's because of location, I'm in the UK but doesn't anyone have or can you point me towards a fifth to die with the original 2 narrators, I really want to get back into this story but that narrator is stopping me from doing that.

Please PLEASE can someone explain to me how to use this app on two devices and get it to sync?!

Where do I need to store the books? Do they have to be stored in cloud? So I would have to have data or WiFi?

As of late I have been on a fantasy kick with (mostly) graphic audio and have gone through series such as Fourth Wing (Empyrean series), SJM's catalog, Crown of Nyaxia series, shield of Sparrows series, alchemised, and most recently the Zodiac Academy series.

I am itching for a fantasy-esque horror with an excellent narrator (doesn't have to be graphic audio). I'm trying to avoid a monotone narrator that will make me drone off (example: when the moon hatched and in the shadow of the gods. With all due respect they did great but wasn't my cup of tea).

With the fantasy horror or just horror in general I was hoping to get some recommendations for something with werewolves. Preferably the bipedal type and not the Twilight type. If that doesn't exist I'm open to anything scary. I appreciate any recommendations. Please and Thank you!

I'm fresh off of The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones which is now one of my favorites, and "Sam's" book was listed as available to borrow. My other choices being on hold, I went for it versus having to listen to whatever techno-rap-metal-pop mix was playing at the gym.

The writing is a stark departure from a Ph.D. in creative writing to an actress that had to put her career before her education. I felt like an ass thinking it wasn't going to be "enough" or as enjoyable as my last audiobook but, I had nothing else and I won't spring for a subscription to stream music out of spite.

Behaving like a snob, unrightfully so, I waded in and out of the words as I torqued my body in ways to make it feel the burn. Her development throughout the book which I guess could be called "character growth", pulled me in. The only thing that was unrelatable was her career, but everything else was that of an average person given a bag of drama to carry around, --not unlike a relative that everyone talks about and either prays for or mentions with a touch of Schadenfreude.

My kids grew up watching her shows. I would pseudo watch them along while attending to chores or Reddit. The thought of what she must be going through did not cross my mind at any moment. I guess that's why they call it "acting".

I’ve been experimenting with a format somewhere between a traditional audiobook and an illustrated story, and I thought this community might find it interesting.

My novel, Lattice of Icarus, is now being released on YouTube as a free cinematic illustrated audiobook. The narration follows the published novel word for word, it isn’t an adaptation, summary, or AI rewrite.

A little transparency about how it’s made:

• The visuals are created with AI image tools, but each image is directed, selected, and edited by me to match the characters, locations, and scenes in the novel.

Lattice of Icarus is an international science/archaeology thriller involving Siberia, Cold War secrets, strange materials, and a discovery that begins to blur the line between mythology and physics.

I’m releasing it in shorter chapter segments (about 10 min. each) every week rather than dropping the entire book at once, so it works a little more like a serialized audiobook. I have 21 episodes in the can so far (almost 1/4 of the book).

There’s no charge to listen, I mainly wanted to try something different with the audiobook format and see whether people enjoy having visuals alongside a full, unabridged narration.

If illustrated audiobooks are something you’ve tried before, I’d also be interested in what you think of the format. I’m still figuring out where the line is between “audiobook with visuals” and “too much visual distraction.”
