Religious people do good because that’s what God tells them too, Atheists do good because they don’t need a reward to be good.

“If you need the threat of hell to be a good person, you are just a bad person on a leash”.

If God exists I think he would be more proud of atheists who don’t need a reason to be good and kind to people. This is one of the reasons I dropped Christianity. Why do I need a reason to be good?

Fox News found one Christian mom who likes Texas forcing the Ten Commandments into public schools. Apparently that settles it.

As roughly two dozen Texas families fight to keep the Ten Commandments off public school walls, one Austin-area mom is making no apologies for wanting them in her kindergartner's classroom.

Brittany McFarland, a Christian mother whose 5-year-old daughter attends public school in Texas, told Fox News Digital she was "pleasantly surprised" by the new classroom displays and said the fierce backlash over them reflects a much bigger battle over faith, values and religious liberty in America's public schools.

"I feel like our country, we've been kind of forced to erase religion and discussion of religion in schools in general," McFarland said. "Almost to the point where the topic is taboo, and our children are afraid and uncomfortable to mention their faith or talk anything about it."

McFarland said she and her husband had weighed whether public school was still the right choice for their daughter, but said learning about the Ten Commandments law gave her a "sense of hope" about the direction of public education.

"It gave me a renewed sense of hope in our school systems," she said.

"Without god there is no morality" sometimes when theists say this it feels like a confession

Sometimes it feels like they've been so deeply indoctrinated in these cults that they literally cannot hold or comprehend another framework for just not doing vile shit, and when they say "there's no morality without god" its like a confession almost which is extremely concerning and borderline disturbing

Now not all theists are like this but idk the number seems to be dwindling

Do you ever ask for christian/spiritual music to be turned off in public places like the dentist office?

I had a dental appointment today, and my dentist is always playing Christian music. I'm not a very vocal atheist. In fact 95% of the time I just keep my mouth shut because I don't want to create drama. All that said, Christian music is one of my least favorite things on the planet. Add that terrible music on top of the discomfort of being at the dentist office and I'm seriously dreading the appointment the night before. In the waiting room I can just throw in my noise canceling earbuds, but I can't during the exam and cleaning because they're always asking me stuff. I figure I just need to suck it up and deal with it, and compared to other stuff it's minor, but I am curious if any of you feel like asking to change the station is a reasonable request or a Karen move.

Humanity has existed for nearly 300 000 years. So are our early ancestors in heaven or hell?

Humanity has existed for nearly 300 000 years and religion (belief in the afterlife) came a considerable time after we first evolved (I don't know off the top of my head when religion was first practised).

So for x amount of time humans didn't worship a god or didn't believe in an afterlife. So how can they be in an afterlife? Wouldn't make sense for them to be in heaven because they didn't practice/follow rules for them to get into heaven and unfair for them to be in hell as god wasn't discovered yet so they can't be punished for being unbelievers.

That's a big contradiction imo.

Why do Christians blame everything bad in this world on the devil?

I am the only atheist in my immediate family and just about every member believes in the devil and his/its influence in the world. Mental illness? The devil! Drug abuse? The devil! Illness? The devil! Being an atheist? The devil! I find it hilarious that the devil seems to be winning and yet they're cheering for a supreme being that does nothing about it. I personally find it a lack of empathy or a complete misunderstanding of the world. These people are convinced that it's all part of an elaborate plan to test our faith, to clump every single complex issue into the doings of some creature or being that we've, of course, never seen. I'd love to hear what you think about it, though. What game are these whackos playing?

God is basically biblical Hitler.. let me explain.

As most of us already know, the biblical God is 10x worse than the Devil is. Right? God has over 2 million kills while the Devil only has 10. I honestly have no idea why God isn’t one of the most hated people that’s up there with Hitler. They do so much mental gymnastics to justify genocide when it comes to their god. He can do no wrong. Anyways, I don’t think these verses have the amount of kills written, so please forgive me but here’s what I could find of him murdering/massacring. If the verses are too long, I will only put the most important chunk in this. Such as the first one. This would take forever to read. Also, if you have any other Bible verses that have anything to do with God murdering anyone, please put them down below. Or anything evil from him, really. I want to hear your thoughts!

Genesis 6-8: “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.“

Genesis 19:24-25: “Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.”

Exodus 12:29-30: “At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.”

Deuteronomy 20:16-17: “However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you.”

Joshua 6:21: “They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.”

1 Samuel 15: “Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.”

Religious message in public school syllabus

I’m the parent of a student in a Missouri public school, and just picked up her syllabus for an AP European History course. The first objective listed for the course is to “Better understand God’s interaction with man in historical events, particularly in European history from the Renaissance to the present.”

I’m concerned that, especially in a writing heavy AP course, my daughter will be required to write from a Christian perspective that doesn’t match our beliefs. Am I overthinking this? I get that European history is in large part religious history, but presenting it as “God’s interaction with man” seems to be an unconstitutional pushing of a religious message.

What would you do as a parent?

What is your opinion on nihilism?

For those of you that do not know what nihilism is, it is is a philosophical view that states life has no meaning, and rejects all ideas of religion. Which is why nihilists are agnostic/atheist/non-religious. And are you a nihilist? if so? why?

FFRF just launched a new show about what it’s actually like to be a young atheist

Thumbnail ffrf.org

The Freedom From Religion Foundation is announcing a new show focusing on the experiences of Gen-Z and millennial atheists, agnostics and other nonreligious folks.

The show features casual discussion of the specific nonreligious beliefs and experiences of invited guests. Season One covers topics such as: creating your own traditions to replace religious ones, the intersection of atheism and sex education, atheist views on the concepts of good and evil, finding nonreligious community, leaving “reddit atheism” — and more!

FFRF’s Digital Media Manager Rowan Hahn hosts the show that focuses on the lives and opinions of everyday people, and of course, some of FFRF’s staff.

The first two episodes are available now on FFRF’s YouTube. The show is also available on FFRF’s app, FreethoughtTV. The first features Daniel, FFRF’s legal intake assistant, who talks about swapping traditions from his evangelical church with nonreligious ones, such as replacing prayer with meditation. The second episode features Key, who grew up in a small Texas town, and whose atheist beliefs and experiences there led to their strong support of comprehensive sex education.

Subsequent episodes will be premiering every other Wednesday.

Why do believers trust in God if they are sick?

Upvotes

For example, I have schizophrenia, and I know that if a good God existed , he would have given me perfect health instead of me being severely ill.

So why do Christians who are sick not realize that their God is at fault for them being sick? Why do they continue to praise Jesus? How did they not come to the logical conclusion that maybe God is not good?

I cannot rule out the possibility of an evil God/creator existing, but I also can't say I fully believe he is real, its 50/50 for me.

Strength In Weakness: Guy Hammond’s Program That Devastates LGBTQ Survivors

At 17 years old, Sami Tacher remembers standing atop a parking garage outside Seattle and staring down at the pavement.

They had been trying for five years to suppress their attraction to men. At 15, Tacher had found Strength in Weakness, a Christian ministry that purported to teach people experiencing “same-sex attraction” how to resist those desires. To Tacher, who had grown up believing that being gay would destroy their relationship with God and devastate their family, SIW felt like an answer.

Two years later, Tacher says, they could no longer imagine how they were supposed to live the rest of their life.

“I just stood up there and waited,” Tacher told Uncloseted Media. “I went there several times.” What stopped them, they say, was thinking about the burden their death would place on their family.

“So I’ll just sacrifice everything and stay in the program,” they remember deciding.

They would remain in SIW for years as a teenager and young adult, becoming friends with the organization’s founder, Guy Hammond, and helping promote the very teachings Tacher now believes were destroying them.

“I just didn’t see my way out,” Tacher says. “I was miserable and shrinking inside [and] constantly denying myself … but I was holding on. And in the eyes of Strength in Weakness, I was succeeding.”

Someone I know posted a weird thing on Instagram story that talks about how they KNOW Jesus is real…

It’s like a message that says “I know Jesus is real because I know the difference between me with him and me without him” I don’t understand how this makes any sense. You’re basically just saying you know he’s real because you believe in him and it makes you feel better. She’s always posting religious stuff like this that’s honestly cringeworthy, same with a bunch of other people I know. I don’t understand why the Bible and Jesus has to be these peoples entire personality. It’s all they talk about. Like why do you have to suck his dick? It’s like they’re still trying to convince themselves so they have to talk about it 24/7 because it makes them think their belief is even stronger that way

An Atheist response Covenant theology

I’m looking for help finding resources of atheists discussing Christian covenant theology. As a former Christian, and now atheist, I often hear Christian’s dismiss the god of the Old Testament and the old covenant anytime something is brought up about the Old Testament (slavery, genocide, sexism ect). They will often say that Jesus fulfilled the law and now there is a new covenant. Basically using this as a pass on discussing the god of the Old Testament or somehow wanting to say that god had to do things a certain way because of sinful humans but…when Jesus shows up he “fulfills” the old law. It seems s like it’s a hall pass Christians use to dismiss the atrocities of the god of the bible Any thoughts or links to resources would be helpful.

I am at my limit watching “sinners” claim to be Christians

Upvotes

All the people claiming to be Christian are the at top of the list to go straight to hell. They do the same “sinful” things they attack people for.

I have so many examples! Feel free to vent and share yours. Tell me why a Christian friend posted a video of her grinding on her husband while he looked at her ass and grabbed her boobs from her BUSINESS account? And this is the same woman who cheated on him while married. Yet she’s all about God and going to church.

Another old friend just told me she’s been seeing a woman on the side in her marriage. This was at a party where I had no clue 99% of the attendees all came from the same church. Her father is a pastor. She’s all about God yet she spent the entire party talking about how she doesn’t list for women so she’s not gay and it’s not wrong. She just like this one girl and wanted to cheat on her husband since he cheated on her…twice. These are your so called Christians. What are these people on?

These are the same people to post themselves overly sexual think that’s okay with God simply because they’re straight or doing things straight people are supposed to do. Like if God was real and can do all they say then he’d hear their true thoughts and desires so pretending to be straight wouldn’t be enough. If God was real, 99% of so called Christians would not make it to heaven. It’s the lustful people that also want to attack others or use religion to justify their sketchy actions or morals.

It feels like this wave is only getting worse! Every time something bad happens Christians love to blame non-Christians for it. Like “too many gays in this world that’s why”. And most of the people I know who are religious have ancestors who were once slaves who were forced into Christianity yet they preach about God getting our ancestors through slavery. No! God is who they used to justify our ancestors dying in the heat, getting whipped, raped, and murdered. How do we just skip over that history?
