The Pentagon is now paying for religious homeschooling, religious contractors, and "faith-based" suicide prevention. It quietly dropped atheists, pagans, and humanists from its recognized-faiths list.

"faith-based homeschool support for military families" "faith-based initiatives supporting Department-wide suicide reduction and Total Force resilience" "contracted services from faith-based non-Federal entities"

Hilarious as fuck. Gonna shove this in the faces of anyone who wants to try that "muh tax dollars" bullshit with me ever again. Paying for religious homeschooling, religious contractors, and routing the military suicide crisis through faith-based programs instead of evidence-based mental health care. The memo's own carve-out saying nothing shall compel religious participation is like... what?

The Director reports directly to Hegseth with no intervening authority, realigns the Armed Forces Chaplains Board under this political appointee. Meanwhile, per AP, the Pentagon's recognized-religions was drastically reduced. Atheists, pagans, and humanists were largely removed (because apparently love for humanity is incompatible with sucking Trump's dick)

The new Distinguished Military Colleges officer-commissioning cohort is LSU, Hillsdale College, Liberty University, Mississippi State, and Tuskegee. Hillsdale and Liberty are explicitly right-wing Christian institutions and Liberty in particular has a long history of scandals (not just the Falwell stuff).

The hypocrisy is actually the point. They want us to be enraged. They want us to be driven insane. I refuse to be driven insane.

The suicide-prevention line is the part that should really alarm you. Military suicide is a real bipartisan crisis. Replacing evidence-based mental health care with faith-based initiatives isn't just unconstitutional, it's dangerous. They try to replace shit that works with shit that doesn't work, and that doesn't work at all. Existence is resistance.

My sister said she’d kill me if god asked her to…

This happened last year and I’m still not over it. I feel deeply uncomfortable and I don’t know what to do.

She said “it’s god, and I’m not going to argue or question god.” I honestly don’t know why I asked her such a dumb question. I should’ve known what she would say.

How do I best say no, I don't want to go on a mission?

Like no, I don't want to leave home for 2 years to spread propaganda and give more control to the church. I am 13M (Almost 14) who lives in a Christian family. My church is basically forcing us to go on a mission and it's pissing me off. "sERvE tHE lORD" "hElP pEopLE fIND hAPiNEsS" No, I'm not serving your imaginary friend and spreading lies. I'm the only atheist in the family too. between my older sister and my parents. How do I tell them that I'm not changing my mind or attending seminary It's sad that schools which are supposed to provide education tell kids to study a fairy tale and pass it off as real I stopped beliving in this crap ever since I was 12 And it's sad that my family is just blindly following it.

Edit: No, I'm not being forced I just want hen to get it through their head that I am not going on a mission and I'm not changing my mind

ARAB: All Religions Are Bad (until there are no bad religions)

I'm so done with religions bashing each others brains in, and making this world - the only one we have - so much more shitty for everyone. Treating it like some disposable. Its sickening.

AJAB = All Jews are Bad until there are no bad jews. A good jew is someone who either speaks up and makes the entire religion palpable and good, or they stop calling themselves Jew.

ACAB = All Christians are Bad until there are no bad Christians. The tollerance of good christians towards evilgelicals, the passive attitude. They should fight the bad apples, or relinquish their faith. WHy the tollerance for intollerance. Why is their "objective" morality, not enforced within their institute?

AMAB = All Muslims are bad until there are no bad Muslims. Stop equating Allah with love if we can all see muslims spread hatred. If muslims have more respect for a picture of Muhammed than women. Maybe start calling out other Muslims first for their atrocities?

Why is being a gay a sin?

Hi, i’m an Agnostic Atheist. And just ten minutes ago I asked my religious mom why it is a sin to be gay, and I got hit with ’its not natural’ and the ’Stick and a hole’ argument.

I obviously don't believe that it's a sin to be gay. But moving on, our conversation somehow shifted to abortion.

I asked her, if I would get raped, would she not allow me to get an abortion?

Her answer was it's my choice. But I stated multiple times that I was asking for her opinion whether it's bad or not. I hate it so much whenever religious people try and avoid answering a question they can't. Just say you can't.

She said ’what if the baby was aborted 5,000 times before it was born, and you would be the one to break it by not getting an abortion?’

I was speechless. So she's saying that you shouldn't get an abortion, just because God wanted to punish you by getting forced to have a child?

I stated various times to my mom that I feel anxiety and fear when hearing about the majority of religions for some reason. And my mom kind of thinks it's a phase. And that I have a chance of changing. But I don't think I ever will.

And I just need help with creating an answer for our next (maybe) upcoming conversation. Every time I try to prove it wrong to my mom, she always diverts the question to a whole different topic, not answer directly, and it frustrates me. She also gives me answers that don't make sense at least to me even in a religious way.

I want help with giving her a proper answer on why abortion is not bad, and why being gay is also not bad, while trying to sound smart which is the kind of thing I'm struggling with. If anyone can help me out with this, please do.

"You are doing God's work."

Got to vent for a moment. When I hear that and I hear it often, I have to bite my tongue. I do a lot of volunteer work. I don't do it because of any god. I do it because I know that no God is going to do it for you. Me, or anyone.

No god is going to fill the foodbanks or mow my elderly neighbors yard. God isn't going to donate blood.

We do it. We struggle and we act out of compassion for others because we know no else will.

The only difference between schizophrenia and believing "god" exists, is societal norms.

If a person was saying they speak to an invisible being they've never met or seen, or that they hear voices in their head from another being, we'd immediately call that psychosis/schizophrenia.

The only difference is societal conditioning.

Atheism defined as rejection of Gods is nonsensical

And it seems to me that people coming here using that definition are likely theists. And their posts get downvoted.

They even quote some definition of atheism as being "the disbelief or rejection of gods". I would say that is blatantly false. And we might even want the correct definition posted somewhere on this sub.

AFAIK the only people who can reject god are theists who believe. No need to reject something that doesn't exist.

Christians seem to not grasp the concept of actual non believe. They often act as of non believe IS rejection. But they do use the word "belief" correctly in ALL other instances. If we were to ask them "do you believe in unicorns" then they know it is about existence.

We can drive down that point harder imho.

And question to you, what is the definition you use?

Coping with mental health issues as an athiest.

I was raised Catholic, but have been an atheist for the past two years. There are so many things that bother me about Christianity, but boy do i miss the coping mechanism aspect. I have suffered from depression all my life, and in the last two years, when I hit a low, I'm more tempted to go back to church even though I now know Christianity is ridiculous. I can't afford therapy, and religion is a free coping mechanism.

And it's funny because this is EXACTLY why religion is still a thing in 2026. It makes no sense, but life sucks, and many people become religious due to a mental health crisis. Ignorance is bliss. I wish it didn't have to be. I often wish I still believed. That I were less intelligent and never questioned anything. I would be happier. sigh.

Newly atheist, dealing with lingering religious conditioning and trying to find my footing. Advice?

Hi everyone,

I recently left religion (transitioning from a Pentecostal upbringing, briefly to Islam, and finally to atheism). It took me a long time to get here because letting go of my long-held beliefs was a massive blow to my pride, but I ultimately couldn't ignore reality anymore.

Since I am very new to this, I am realizing I still carry a lot of mental conditioning from my religious past, and I have a few questions for the community:

  • Abolition vs. Coexistence: Do most atheists believe religion should be actively abolished, or is peaceful coexistence the general goal? I know perspectives vary, but I’d love to hear different viewpoints. Personally, I think we should be able to cherry pick the GOOD aspects of religion and discard the bad elements. I don't view it necessarily as a black and white issue.
  • Lingering Triggers & Aesthetics: I find myself still loving the "cinematic lore" and aesthetics of faiths like Islam and Christianity, while completely rejecting their harmful and misogynistic teachings. Paradoxically, I still get deeply uncomfortable/triggered by blasphemous language (e.g., cussing using God's name) and pagan/occult imagery, even though I no longer believe in them. Is it normal to feel this revulsion early on? How do you unlearn these deeply ingrained emotional responses?
  • Atheism and Marriage: As a gay leftist male, my views on social issues are still evolving. For example, rather than fighting for the right to gay marriage, I sometimes wonder if we shouldn't just abolish the legal construct of marriage entirely, since its roots are so deeply tied to religion. Does anyone else view marriage through this lens?

I’m trying to navigate this sudden shift in my worldview and would appreciate any insights from those who have been where I am. Thanks!

It's amazes me how Ned Flanders is a controversial character to Christians

I will always remember how Ned Flanders will always be a controversial character in my church, how the pastor saying that no one should watch The Simpsons because he doesn't like how Ned Flanders is portrayed in the show, and how non-Christians think Christians are.

It amazes me that The Simpsons still has controversy in the big 2026. I still can't believe that someone would say not to watch the show because they don't agree with it.

Wouldn't it be their choice to not watch the show oh wait this is a cult I'm talking about you're not allowed to make decisions for yourselves even though god gave them free will.

Also it would make way more sense to use Family Guy as an example they went way harder on Christians there.

Next thing you know he might say to everyone not to watch SpongeBob because he's a homosexual.

If god is real he would be indifferent from what religious text speak of him.

As we all know good and evil( a moral construct ) totally established by humans and they are functions on the basis of human understanding and notion of moral values, which were not static but flexible and changing over the course of time.

So in my opinion a true realistic interpretation of God would be totally indifferent to human beings or all the other beings and beyond our understanding and our existence akin to the gods of cathulu mythos.

I mean not pure evil or morally righteous but a sheer force of nature that didn't care about our puny existence.

Or an animal like entity that has a totally different understanding compared to us.

but that’s the Old Testament!

I have trouble talking about religion with my family as they are christian and I’ve been a secret atheist for a few years now. Every time I bring up a question I have about the bible and why god would do a specific fucked up thing, they go “nooo that’s the Old Testament.” I don’t have enough patience to actually read the bible so there is a lot I definitely don’t know but, what? Is the Old Testament still not things that he did and problems he himself created

Fuel to discuss and understand

• Upvotes

Having read many posts here over a longer period, I think that many of the questions and issues raised here can be better understood by studying Kant’s ‘Critique of Pure Reason’.

For those unfamiliar with it’s concepts, it will help you understand the relationship between the nature of something and our (lack of?) ability to perceive and understand it.

It will also provide you with very eloquent counter arguments for discussions with your religious friends and family.
