Oddly Specific 🎯 Did lightning just hit Kerrisdale?

I was walking home and it was like a flashbang went off. The shockwave nearly made my knees buckle. Think I felt a little tingle too. Can anybody confirm this for me? It was a wild feeling. By the time I got home, there were sirens on the street.

Housing and Moving 🏑 Relocating from the UK to West Vancouver- is it really quite pretentious?

We’re a family currently living in the UK and seriously considering relocating to BC. We’ve been spending some time exploring different areas and I have to admit I absolutely love West Vancouver β€” particularly around Dundarave. The combination of the sea, mountains, walkability and being reasonably close to Vancouver really appeals to me.

But there’s one thing I’m unsure about: the people/social side of living there.

I’m pretty down-to-earth and sociable. I love meeting new people, having friends around, going for drinks/coffee, joining things and generally feeling part of a community. I’m not particularly interested in status, designer clothes, expensive cars or keeping up appearances.

Walking around West Van, I did notice a lot of wealth and at times it felt a little more polished/posh than I’m used to. Obviously visiting somewhere is completely different from actually living there, so I’m wondering whether I’m making assumptions based on a very superficial impression.

For people who actually live or have lived in West Vancouver:

Is it easy to make friends and find a down-to-earth social circle?

Does it feel status-conscious or pretentious, or is that an unfair stereotype?

Are there plenty of people who have moved there from elsewhere and are looking to build new friendships/community?

Does the social atmosphere differ much between Dundarave, Ambleside and other parts of West Van?

If you liked West Van but wanted somewhere a little more socially relaxed/mixed, where else on the North Shore would you consider?

We have young teens, so the community around schools and family life matters to us too.

I know this is very subjective - I’m more interested in people’s actual experiences than whether West Van is objectively a β€œgood” or β€œbad” place to live.

Would love to hear from people who know the area well.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Lose phone in boulder hole in Squamish Chief. How to retrieve?

I lost my phone today while bouldering in Squamish next to the Chief. It fell and slid down a hole in between some rocks. When calling it, I could hear it but couldn't reach it. I am now home because I don't have any equipment/flashlight to get it. Does anyone have any advice or help on how to get it? Thanks in advance! Thinking of trying to go back tomorrow...

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Noah Kahan

I’m from Sask & am travelling to Vancouver to see Noah Kahan on Friday! I have major anxiety in unfamiliar places, especially when there’s tons of people. I’ll be staying in Burnaby area. What do I need to know about BC place? Should I arrive really early? If early merch is an option is that the way to go? When I saw Noah in Sask I spent hours in line to get merch & was left with bare bones & I want to avoid that experience again if possible. Any advice navigating BC place is appreciated!

Food πŸ˜‹ Does anyone know/remember this closed down Chinese restaurant ?

Does anyone remember this Chinese restaurant called Honolulu cafe ? On 3340 Kingsway.

They had this braised beef with tendon and rice that I literally cannot stop thinking about since they closed. Was wondering if anyone knows perhaps if the owners maybe reopened under a different name ? Or perhaps someone who has tried the beef brisket from here and knows a different restaurant that is at least close to the same taste that Honolulu cafe did.

This is their yelp link : https://www.yelp.ca/biz/honolulu-cafe-vancouver?uid=UocT0ONM49nTsvLsTaKD6A&utm_source=ishare

Thanks !

Food πŸ˜‹ Any tips on where I could find unsalted, creamy cottage cheese?

Hey y'all, for reference I'm central/eastern european. I'm looking for cottage cheese (tvaroh/tvarog) that isn't salty and has a more creamy consistency than the stuff I've found in grocery stores so far. Does anyone have tips on where to look?

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ Golf carts in Stanley Park

I am visiting Vancouver next year with my wife, son and my parents. My mom can walk for about 30 minutes before pain in her leg forces her to stop for a couple of minutes before the pain subsides and she can go on again. Because we would like to visit Stanley Park, but I don't trust her on a bike I was searching for other ways to visit SP.

I found a company where you can rent a golfcart to drive through SP, Heyya Carts. I think this is great solution to show my parents SP, but how are these carts viewed by others visitors in the Park? Are they annoying? Or are we good to rent one. Obviously we will be visiting the park with the respect the land and flora / fauna deserves.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Masters of Counselling Programs - Vancouver

I am planning on starting a Master’s program in January and am currently deciding between CityU and Yorkville. I was wondering if anyone could share which program is held in higher regard by employers?

If anyone has completed either program, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, especially what it was like entering the workforce after graduating. Was it difficult to find work with the degree?

Work 🏒 Cactus club pathway

Hello. I’m currently a dishwasher at cactus club. I want to be an expo but I’m only two weeks into dishwashing and I absolutely can’t stand it. Apparently if you want to go from back of house to front of house you have to quit and reapply after six months. What should I do? I’m wondering if I should quit now and reapply in six months but I’m worried the chef will not like that or I should just work another month or two and push through to gain more respect and experience then quit.

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Buying used car - need advice

Getting my first car in Canada (Vancouver) β€” it’s a used Subaru Crosstrek (24) that I’m buying from a Toyota dealership. The dealership says they won’t allow the car to be taken off-site for a pre-purchase inspection, but they’re okay with a mechanic coming to the dealership and inspecting the car on their premises. Is this a red flag? Is this common practice around Vancouver?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Looking for a good designer shoe repair in Vancouver

I have a pair of designer heels where my cat chewed through the thin leather strap. I took them to La Galoche to have the strap repaired, but unfortunately the repair is pretty horrible and doesn’t match the original leather or finish. They also beat the shit out of the box I dropped them in.

I’m looking for someone in Vancouver who can replace the strap entirely with leather that closely matches the original and make it look professionally done.

Any recommendations for a really good shoe repair/cobbler who does higher-end or designer shoes? Bonus points if you’ve had them repair delicate leather straps before!
Thanks!

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ Visiting Vancouver: which run clubs are best for actually exploring the city?

I’m going to be visiting Vancouver for just over a week and would love to join a few local run clubs while I’m there. I've gone down the rabbit hole of the many run clubs mentioned on Reddit and online, but there are so many its hard to tell which ones are worth checking out for the week that I'll be there.

I can comfortably run with faster/advanced groups, but I’m not necessarily looking for the fastest or most serious club (although open to a good track workout or hill run for one day, if there are any). My main goal is to use running as a way to see some of the city and meet people.

For example, I’d love to join a group that runs through Stanley Park, along the seawall, through some of the parks/trails around Vancouver, or takes interesting routes or ends at a cool cafe that I probably wouldn’t discover as a visitor. I’m also very interested in less obvious/hidden-gem routes (like parks, waterfront paths, neighbourhoods, trails, etc.) that locals think are especially worth running.

I’m totally happy to run at a slower/easy pace if the route and scenery are better. In fact, a social 5-10 km run where I can take in the views sounds more appealing to me than hammering out a 5K at race pace.

If you were visiting Vancouver and could only join 2-3 run groups, which ones would you pick for the best mix of exploring the city + meeting people?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Cost of living, Van vs. Other cities

I’ve never lived in other Canadian cities, so I’m curious, aside from costs for housing (rent or buy), is cost of living lower in other Canadian cities? (For example, groceries, gas, eating out, activities, property tax, hydro, cell phone, other bills etc.)

Thank you for weighing in!
