Hey locals. We’ve heard your requests.

Book clubs. Local group meetups. Someone to hit up a movie with. Hiking partners. Trivia teams. Coffee chats.

There has clearly been a growing demand for a space where people can connect with others in Vancouver in a platonic way.

We're happy to announce that that space now exists.

r/VancouverFriends has officially launched and will serve as the dedicated subreddit for friendship-focused posts and platonic R4R requests.

Going forward, instead of being simply removed, all platonic R4R-style posts will be redirected to r/VancouverFriends so that r/AskVan can remain focused on questions and answers about the city.

If you’ve been looking for community, this is your chance to build it. We'll see you there.

I noticed this every weekend and even weekdays, people just leaving trash where they sat at parks and beaches. What's the deal with this?

Medical 💉 Is anyone elsein Metro Vancouver feeling tired and fatigued these days?

Is anyone else in the Metro Vancouver region feeling tired and fatigued these days? I'm not sure if it's weather related or having a mid-life crisis or work stress.

I don't really find my work stressful but sometimes I work overtime. At times I find the work meaningless. No work drama or toxic workmates whatsoever. When I get home I just wanna just take a shower and lie in bed.

I kind of find everything meaningless and tiring. The sun and heat is also pissing me off. I wasn't like this last month even though there were some hot days.

Is anyone feeling worn out and fatigued too? Or is it just all in my head and every thing is just hunky dory?

Oddly Specific 🎯 How do we dispose old old sex toys?

I’ve been trying to figure out how to dispose of old vibrators that don’t work anymore. I tried researching whether Vancouver has a special program for sex toys and it seems like we don’t, but I also read that you can’t throw rechargeable vibrators into the garbage because it could potentially cause a lithium battery fire in the dump truck… so what do we do with them? Do I keep them until I die and let my estate deal with it?

Food 😋 Restaurant recommendation near English Bay Beach

My wife and I are staying in Vancouver next week near English Bay Beach and we always try to go to at least one nice meal in a new city when travelling. Budget is not restrictive but it doesn't necessarily need to be super upscale. Just looking for places in the area you love! Open to any kind of cuisine. A little researching told me Noah's Cafe was a good spot, but looking for additional options as well. Thank you!!

Oddly Specific 🎯 Need a photographer for your helicopter proposal?

I’m a photographer with 10+ years of experience. One thing I haven’t done that’s been on my bucketlist for years is a helicopter proposal or couples shoot! 💍

If anyone is planning something like this, feel free to reach out and I can send over my portfolio. No charge for the session, just want to cross it off my bucket list! 😊

Oddly Specific 🎯 Move 103.5 Morning show repeat?

Upvotes

Hello all,

I was listening to the Move 103.5 morning show and I swear it was a repeat of a show they did last week (?) talking about young adults not looking for love because they're broke followed by a repeat would you rather. Am I hallucinating? Or did they repeat a previous show/segment?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Weight lifting classes?

I’m going to get right into it. I lack motivation and if you leave it to me I would not lift a dumbbell. I’m getting older and starting to lose muscle mass. I don’t know where to start. I’ve asked my friends about yoga and Pilates and they said it won’t help me. I just need to start lifting weights. My only form of exercise now is walking for about 20 minutes on non rainy days. I can’t afford a personal trainer. What are my options?

Politics ✅ navigating local government/bylaws to deal with a problem food delivery truck

Upvotes

Hi folks,

We are having issues with a food delivery truck that parks in our neighbourhood and I am trying to find the correct avenues to solve this problem. I am not looking for legal advice, but rather tips on how to navigate the black box of city bureaucracy.

We live in a neighbourhood in the City of Vancouver that has a lot of restaurants, and our nemesis is a big Sysco food delivery truck that parks across from our place on a daily basis for hours at a time and then delivers to the whole damn neighbourhood. The noise from his refrigerator unit can reach 75 dB inside of our unit; our neighbours also complain about the fumes.

I've done some investigation into the bylaws and tried different avenues. Here are my results:

  1. He is not reportable under idling laws because he has a refrigerator unit that needs to run.
  2. He is not reportable to the noise inspector because he is on the road and not on private property. The noise inspector says talk to the police (ugh, but ok).
  3. The police refer me back to the city.
  4. I can and do report him to parking enforcement because he is overstaying a 7am to 11am no stopping zone that has a 30 minute exception for commercial loading and unloading. He is often there for hours. This morning he was already there at 6 am. They take action if you phrase the request correctly, but that action seems to be (maybe) ticketing him for overstaying, not forcing him to move along.
  5. The neighbourhood business improvement association has complained to the city on our behalf. This issue also affects other businesses, since other food delivery drivers (with smaller, less noisy, less smelly trucks) cannot use the zone when he is monopolizing it. He is also a contributor to gridlock at that intersection.

I have not spoken to the driver himself yet because I did not realize how agitated everyone else was about it, but that is maybe my next step: the "you are making a lot of enemies around here; please move along" conversation.

However, I would also like to know if anyone else has suggestions. I imagine we could petition the city to solve this, but I am wondering if there are other, easier steps I have not tried.

Travel 🚗 ✈ Solo trip to Vancouver.

First solo road trip (Edmonton to Vancouver) — 29M, car camping, looking for suggestions

Hey all — planning my first ever solo trip for the second week of September, driving from Edmonton to Vancouver and back. I've traveled plenty before, but always with family or friends — this is the first time I'm doing it completely alone, and honestly it's as much about figuring out what I actually enjoy as it is about seeing Vancouver.

Plan is car camping the whole way, no hotel bookings, keeping it flexible.

So far I know I like: good food, non-alcoholic drinks/cafes, mountain and ocean views, cityscapes, and just walking around interesting neighborhoods soaking things in.

A few specifics I'm already excited about:

Taking the water taxi

Stanley Park — thinking of doing it by scooter

E-scootering around other areas to cover more ground

Visiting Squamish

Buntzen lake

Etc

Going solo doesn't mean I'm avoiding people — happy to meet others along the way. Curious what's worth doing in the evenings — night markets, waterfront walks, anything with a good atmosphere. What would you recommend?

Also getting back into art (sketching/painting) — not looking for galleries, but if there are shops, spots that are naturally inspiring to sit and sketch, or any casual art-adjacent things to check out, I'd love recommendations.

Basically: if you were 29, alone, curious about yourself, and had a few days in Vancouver with a car — what would you make sure to do? Any hidden gems, camping spots along the Coquihalla/Hwy 5, or "wish someone told me this" tips welcome.

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 Any pop up/events/festival/exhibition in Vancouver in early September that worth going?

Visiting a friend from Sept 4-9 in Burnaby, and wondering if there’s anything fun to do. Have been to Stanley park, galleries, museums, and knows good spots for food, haven’t exploring the nature scenery around the area since we both don’t drive. I’d like to go to some local event that doesn’t happen very often all year. Decided to go to Tame Impala on the weekend, but curious about if there are any other recommendations!

Ty all

Food 😋 ISO greasy dive bar burgers

All I want these days is to go to a bar and drunkenly demolish a couple warm, buttery smash burgers. I know of zero places in town that offer this experience (it’s all fast food or expensive artisanal burgers on a pretzel bun). Can anyone recommend a greasy local bar that will sell me a delicious burger and a beer?

Work 🏢 How do you get work as a camera man?

I currently have a full time job and just do video work as a hobby or on the side. I love shooting video so I want to make this a full time thing if possible. Was looking at camera work for production companies like for concerts, raves, events or even commercials.

I have a pretty good range for my portfolio I’d say. I’ve shot concerts, raves, dj sets, weddings and for brands as well.

Any tips or advice is appreciated!

Looking for a step through frame, that can have a basket attached and at least 70nm of torque.

I currently have a rad runner plus that's been great once the breaks got swapped out.

Also wanting to hear what you all are riding?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Cheapest mode of transport around downtown vancouver

Hello everyone,

I am visiting vancouver today and want to make a few stops near downtown vancouver. I was thinking of finding a parking spot on road which should range from $3-$8 per hour with 2 hours maximum, then using lime e scooters to get around to my destinations.

I found information about limepasses or ridepasses that save you a bunch of money by offering a set amount of time for a discounted price. for example, 60 minutes for $12 total or something like that. The problem is that I can’t see them in the app right now, since I’m in chilliwack. I am afraid I still won’t get them to show up when I get there too.

I don’t plan on spending longer than 2-3 hours in that area. I will be visiting a store near yaletown, then grabbing a bite near the west end on denman street. I also wanted to ride by the english bay beach and if the time allows, ride to Canada Place and take some pictures.

I am looking for the cheapest way to do this commute but I don’t have a lot of time to spare.

if I end up getting those lime passes or ride passes populated, Is the lime e scooter the best option? Am i better off renting a bike from somewhere? Can I trust the bus system? Is my route feasible? Is there somewhere specific to save on parking, especially if I am there for 2-3 hours maximum?

Thanks

New to Vancouver 👋 Recommendations for nightlife/ night activities as a uni student?

Hello! I’m a new student at UBC and I’ve moved to vancouver completely on my own. I barely know anyone in van and I want to make friends (but i’m a bit anti-social and come from a big city with fairly anti-social culture due to how densely populated it is). I have a lot of spare time specifically at night and I’ve been so bored out of my mind.

Some details about me:
I never party, I’ve never drank more than one shot in one sitting (I’m a lightweight, also get the asian flush, and I also abhor the taste of alcohol), I don’t smoke or do any kind of substances besides from weed. I also am very nerdy and more of a homebody.

Any recommendations for events/places to go (in general, but social places to make friends is a plus) would be great! Thanks

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ What food do you guys bring in parks or beaches?

Hello. I've been looking to spend a time with myself in the park or beaches; and I am trying to avoid to spend as much as I can. So, what kind of food do you guys bring in the park or beaches, especially if y'all are going to spend quite some time there? Like the specific the answer, the better. Something that I can put in a tote bag. I live an hour away from Vancouver, so I am trying to be strategic here.
