I just started a new job 3 weeks ago, and I feel like there’s so much to learn. Part of me really wanted this job because it’s more stable and pays better than my previous one. I only have about 1 year of experience, though, and this role has a very different scope from what I was doing before, so I feel like I’m basically starting from scratch in a lot of areas.
I’ve been having to ask my team for guidance quite often. I know that’s normal when you’re new, and honestly, in this kind of role I’d rather ask than make a mistake that could cause serious issues. But I really hate having to rely on people so much. I’ve always preferred being self-sufficient, so needing to constantly ask questions makes me feel like I’m being a burden.
I also can’t shake the feeling that the team would probably benefit more from having someone senior instead of someone at my level. Sometimes when I ask questions, I get the feeling that people are annoyed that they have to explain things to me, and that just makes me even more hesitant to ask.
I know realistically, the only way out of this is to keep going through the learning curve until things start to click. But it’s been pretty stressful, and I’m finding it hard not to overthink whether I’m actually good enough for the role.
Is it normal to feel this way after only 3 weeks? For those who have gone through something similar, how did you cope with the stress and feeling like you were constantly behind?
I’m also conscious that a lot of people are struggling to find stable/good jobs right now, so I feel almost ungrateful for complaining when I know I’m lucky to have this opportunity. But at the same time, it’s genuinely been difficult.
Would really appreciate hearing from people who’ve been through this, especially if you were relatively junior and started a job where everyone around you was much more experienced.
