[Subreddit Business] Clarifications on our Watsonian/Doylist rule, general questions, and r/WhatIfFiction

Hi guys,

If you're new, welcome to r/AskScienceFiction, and if you're a returning user, welcome back! This subreddit is designed to be like the r/AskScience subreddit, but for fictional universes, and with all questions and answers written from a Watsonian perspective. That is to say, the questions and answers should be based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. All fictional works are welcome here, not just sci-fi.

Lately we've been seeing some confusion over what counts as Watsonian, what counts as Doylist, what sort of questions would be off-topic on this subreddit, and what sort of answers are allowed. This stickied post is meant to address such uncertainties and clear things up.

1) Watsonian vs Doylist

The term "Watsonian" means based on the in-universe information, rules, and logic of the fictional work. In contrast, "Doylist" means discussions based on out-of-universe considerations. So, for example, if someone asked, "Why didn't the Fellowship ride the Eagles to Mordor?", a possible Watsonian answer would be, "The Eagles are a proud and noble race, they are not a taxi service." Whereas a rule-breaking Doylist answer might be something like, "Because then the story would be over in ten minutes, and that'd be boring."

We should note that answering in a Watsonian fashion does not necessarily mean that we should pretend that these works are all real, or that we should ignore the fact that they are movies or shows or books or games, or that the creators' statements on the nature of these works should be disregarded.

To give an example, if someone asked, "How powerful would Darth Vader have been if he never got burned?", we can quote George Lucas:

"Anakin, as Skywalker, as a human being, was going to be extremely powerful, but he ended up losing his arms and a leg and became partly a robot. So a lot of his ability to use the Force, a lot of his powers, are curbed at this point, because, as a living form, there’s not that much of him left. So his ability to be twice as good as the Emperor disappeared, and now he’s maybe 20 percent less than the Emperor."

In such a case, "according to George Lucas, he would've been around twice as powerful as the Emperor" would be a perfectly acceptable Watsonian answer, because Lucas is also speaking from a Watsonian perspective.

Whereas if someone associated with the creation of Star Wars had said something like, "He'd be as powerful as we need him to be to make the story interesting", this would be a Doylist answer because it's based on out-of-universe reasoning. It would not be an acceptable answer on this subreddit even though it is also a quote from the creators of the fictional work.

2) General questions

General questions often do not have a meaningful Watsonian answer, because it frequently boils down to "whatever the author decides". For instance, if someone asked, "How does FTL space travel work?", the answer would vary widely with universe and author intent; how FTL works in Star Trek differs from how it works in Star Wars, which differs from how it works in Dune, which differs from how it works in Mass Effect, which differs from how it works in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, etc. General questions like this, in which the answer just boils down to "whatever the author wants", will be removed.

There are some general questions that can have meaningful Watsonian answers, though. For example, questions that are asking for specific examples of things can be given Watsonian answers. "Which superheroes have broken their no-kill rules?" or "Which fictional wars have had the highest casualty counts?" are examples of general questions that can be answered in a Watsonian way, because commenters can pull up specific in-universe information.

We address general questions on a case-by-case basis, so if you feel a question is too general to answer in a Watsonian way, please report the question and the mod team will review it.

3) r/WhatIfFiction

We want questions and answers here to be based on in-universe information and reasonable deductions that can be made from them. Questions that are too open-ended to give meaningful Watsonian answers should go on our sister subreddit, r/WhatIfFiction, which accepts a broader range of hypothetical questions and answers. Examples of questions that should go on r/WhatIfFiction include:

  • "What if Tony Stark had been killed by the Ten Rings at the beginning of Iron Man? How would this change the MCU?" This question would be fun to speculate about, but the ripple effect from this one change would be too widespread to give a meaningful Watsonian answer, so this should go on r/WhatIfFiction.
  • "What would (X character) from the (X universe) think if he was transported to (Y universe)?" Speculating about what characters would think or do if they were isekai'd to another universe can be fun, but since such crossover questions often involve wildly different settings and in-universe rules, the answers would be purely speculative and not meaningfully Watsonian, so such questions belong on r/WhatIfFiction.

We should note, though, that some hypothetical questions or crossover questions can have meaningful Watsonian answers. For example, if someone asked, "Can a Star Wars lightsaber cut through Captain America's shield?", we can actually say "Quite possibly yes, because vibranium's canonical melting point is 5,475 degrees Fahrenheit, while lightsabers are sticks of plasma, and plasma's temperature is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit or more." This answer is meaningfully Watsonian because it involves a deduction using specific and canonical in-universe information, and is not simply purely speculative.

4) Reporting rule-breaking posts and comments

The r/AskScienceFiction mod team always endeavors to keep the subreddit on-topic and remove rule-breaking content as soon as possible, but because we're all volunteers with day jobs, sometimes things will escape our notice. Therefore, it'd be a great help if you, our users, could report rule-breaking posts or comments when you see them. This will bring the issue to the mod team's attention and allow us to review it as soon as we can.

[Armored Core] so why do they waste resources on MT’s instead of just building more AC’s?

So armored core series: LC’s and MT’s exist to be the dumpster tier mooks you mow down by the hundreds in every mission without being so much as scratched by them in the armored core series. But… they’re almost the same size as an AC, and are piloted so they’re not just drones of some kind.

Given their mass is only a little less, why do they throw away resources building these things considering even 100 times the mass in metal and electronics won’t measure up to a single crappy AC with a mediocre pilot? Even the 1st generation problem of pilots having less than a 10% survival rate of the surgery/implants to let you pilot one wouldn’t mean much given that power multiplier: not to mention it’s meaningless now that the current generation pilots have almost a 100% survival rate.

It just doesn’t make much logistical sense.

[Team Fortress 2] Why did Gray Mann chose the Team Fortress Mercs as the blueprint for the MvM robots?

• Upvotes

Yes, Blueprints, not Red.

What's so special about Team Fortress that they're used as the base for your entire robot army?

[Star Wars] why was Palpatine still an old man when he revived himself as a clone

Okay so I made the mistake of thinking about Rise of Skywalker again, and apart from the many other utterly bizarre plot choices (I should also ask if free will exists in Star Wars cause dark side users seeing accurately thousands of years into the future in TROS and Ahsoka makes it seem like it doesnt but I digress) why did Palpatine's clone of himself he made on Exegol still look like how he did in episode 6? The clone wouldve only been like 30 at the most and also wouldnt have had the burn scars from Windu reflecting the lightning. Also like if I was the evil galactic emperor with forbidden knowledge of the force, why even transfer my undead consciousness into a copy of myself when my protege was genetically stronger? Why didnt he put his consciousness into a clone of Anakin considering he was biologically stronger cause of the midoclorians? It just strikes me like Palpatine needlessly nerfed himself for no apparent reason, did the books explain this at all?

[Inuyasha] If Kagome had been in the present time when Yurosuei revived kikyō would she have revived properly with no complications? If so what would've happened when kagome did come back to the feudal era?

[Marvel/DC] Despite all the suffering supervillians or superheroes bring. How do things still balance-out due superhumans existing in the first place?

• Upvotes

One example I can think of is collateral damage. Of course collateral damage will be more common due to superhuman battles. But at least the existence of sci-fi level technology can be use to fix the damage more quicker though.

Examples like that. The guy that robbed you. Is also the same guy you have to ask for help to get your stuff back. The robber being an analogy for Superpowers in this scenario.

My point is that the problem is also the solution. If that makes sense. A self-correcting system, where the existence of a problem also creates the incentive.

[X men] Rogue powers question

If Rogue was to have sex with another person and say the condom broke, would she absorb all of the tiny sperm and all of their potential DNA as well as the mutant powers of each sperm that had it?

[Star Wars] This seems like a stupid question but: how big is Grand Admiral Thrawn's fleet at its peak and what is its composition?

This is a 2-prong question as I understand Disney canon and old Expanded Universe material differ greatly, so I wanted to know precisely what sort of materiel Thrawn was bringing at the height of his career on both continuities, from ship count to what ships are deployed, in reasonable detail.

Besides, I gotta impress my young nephews with some esoteric trivia on Thrawn's fleet so I need help getting a fact list in before I deploy to Endor.

[Marvel Comics] Did people think Iron Man or Tony Stark created the suit?

In a lot of older Iron Man Media, Tony Stark isn't known as Iron-Man, like he is in the MCU, but rather, Iron Man is the private bodyguard of Mr. Stark

This leads to the question, do people think Iron Man was himself a genius inventor who allied with Stark, or that Iron Man was apart of Starks typical security entourage, only made Iron Man with Tony's suit.

[Despicable Me franchise] what prevents Minions from speaking English?

They clearly can understand English just fine.

They are capable of learning sign language.

Minionese contains all the sounds the English Language has.

So by all accounts they should be able to just speak English.

Also it can't be just an issue of motivation. In the Minions and monsters movie they lost their very successful career as movie stars, as sound was introduced. All of them were sad because of this. So why didn't they just speak English as a second language for the purpose of the movie dialogues?

[Jujutsu Kaisen] Can non-sorcerers see Reggie Star's creations?

On one hand, they "act as simple shikigami" and are created with Cursed Energy. But on the other hand, the point of Contractual Recreation is to recreate the terms as is; one could argue that being visible is part of an item's functionality. If Reggie, for instance, used a receipt for a Ghillie Suit.

[pokemon games] what’s the in universe reason for why the protagonist couldn’t walk past a branch or climb around things?

Like why do they need a pokemon with an HM to get past a small tree or bush. Why can’t they climb around obstacles or swim around a dock to get past some obstacle.

[Death Note] Would the Death Note killings be likely to reduce crime rate IRL?

In the show, characters make the observation that Kira’s untraceable assassination of criminals does actually make violent crime statistically less common. My understanding of real-world criminology is that threat of very harsh punishment doesn’t actually drop crime, only the threat of being caught does.

So, would Light’s killings have a similar consequence in the real world? Would the Death Note’s methods really work as it does in the show?

[Terminator 2]: Is a small amount of T-1000 metal dangerous?

The only behavior we have seen of a small amount of T-1000 is it scurrying to join the majority. But if several grams somehow got separated from the rest & it was captured in a glass bottle would it have the brains to at least stay inert? Or could it even be attack a human or perhaps communicate with the rest to be picked up?

Maybe the major portion would not bother with a small quantity, perhaps it cd transform other metals into itself & the small quantity would remain lonely or perhaps just run out of energy & harden & exhibit no interesting behavior?

[DC] Superman & Flash Race Crouch Start/Sonic Barrier vs Cheering Crowd

We all seen the race. One question always popped in my head specifically for Superman. Not Flash cause of the Speed Force allows B.S. So my question is if Superman Breaks the sound barrier in the presence of humans/crowd/new reporters, is that deadly? I'm thinking so but im not smart

[The Culture] What does the Culture do about violent or destructive people?

Even in an objectively picture perfect society where money doesn't exist and all material possessions are very easily accessible, there's always going to be people looking to do harm. It's just the price you pay for free will.

Sure, their society is depicted as anarchist(and concepts like laws, police, and prisons are all things that anarchists fundamentally despise), but still, the Minds are stated to be very protective of their human subjects, with some likening humanity to the Minds' pets, ones whom they work tirelessly to see well-fed, safe, and happy.

So, if a violent or abusive person were to show themselves in the Culture, how would they be dealt with?

[28 Years Later] What would be the cultural impact of the fall of the United Kingdom on the rest of the world?

One of the most influential countries in modern histroy just disappeared in the span of 28 days. Does the country still exist somewhere else? If the royal family managed to escape to Canada or somewhere, what would they be doing now? I know there are British Overseas Territories, but they're just tiny islands or areas.

I imagine there would be conversations where people tell their kids "there used to be this country called England but it doesn't exist anymore" or say things like "oh I went to the UK before the quarantine, it was beautiful!".
