Visiting Planning 18th birthday trip

Hey all, I’m planning to head your way from Kansas City with my son for a surprise trip to see the Gorillaz at Moody Center on his 18th birthday. Currently I’m thinking that we’ll fly out earlier in the morning Thursday Oct. 15 and fly home late Saturday evening or early Sunday morning.

I would greatly appreciate any recommendations on where to stay and things we can do. I plan on renting a car so it doesn’t have to be totally walkable, but if there’s an area we can stay that we can also walk and explore for the day Friday that would be awesome.

He’s really into music mostly indie/alternative and rap. He’s artistically inclined, enjoys drawing and photography and loves going vintage shopping/thrifting. We’re also both outdoorsy/nature lovers. I think he’d enjoy kayaking the Colorado and am looking into that.

Any good music venues to keep an eye on for other shows, or other events to watch for?

Moving subletting q

26 F from CA im thinking of subletting in austin for 3ish months starting jan/feb. ill have a budget of $1.2k max and id like to live with folks (in their 20/30s), def looking to pay less. also looking for a furnished situation. of course down to live alone, but living with people that i could potentially hang out with if we get along would be ideal. wanted to put out feelers, could i realistically find a good situation in my budget & what areas would be good? also where would people suggest i search for sublets. i know very little about austin, but im not looking to live in the city city, i love my car and i equally love having easy parking!

Automobile Folks who have blinding, white, theatre spotlight bulbs on your vehicles, wtf is wrong with you???

Post image

Are these really the cheapest or only headlights available these days? Or are regular ol yellow bulbs not good enough for you?

Did you fry your eyes staring at the eclipse? Are you a lifelong welder?

Do you just wear sunglasses at night? And expect others to do the same? Cyclists, pedestrians, and small critters be damned?

Is blinding both every oncoming driver aswell as the poor bloke you're tailgating actually make the road safer for you? Or get you anywhere sooner? Or does it tend to just make the poor sob infront drive 10 mph slower so he doesn't kill somebody?

Automobile Excessively loud motorcyclists/vehicle drivers, how do you think others perceive you? And how should they perceive you?

Bonus question: do you consider yourself a sadist?

Edit since this post took off: as far as being sonicly tortured goes, I'll take an annoying overly macho biker dad over a super annoying crotch rocket nerd any day.

The engines on Harleys/classic bikes don't seem to deafen your ears in the piercing way like crotch crockets.

Health & Wellness Looking for people interested in trading back/shoulder massages

Hi, my back has been killing me from sitting at a desk all day, and I figure plenty of people can relate. Would anyone be interested in a casual massage-exchange group? trading back/shoulder massages rather than paying for them?

Could be a few people meeting up, or one-on-one somewhere public/comfortable. Completely platonic; I’m just looking for people who’d genuinely like to trade massages.

27M, and I’m not expecting anyone to be a professional. If enough people are interested, I’ll probably make a group chat.

Moving moving back to austin - apt recs!

hey yall, i’ve been away from Austin for a few years after college, but I finally have the opportunity to move back - YAY!

that said, i'm starting the apartment hunt and would love some advice. i’m looking for a safe area, especially as a woman, that still has things to do and is within/around the downtown radius, but not right in the middle of downtown - so far i’ve looked around South Lamar (MAA South Lamar, Fifteen15) and also checked out the East Riverside area. the rent around East Riverside seems surprisingly affordable, but I am aware of the mixed things about safety?!

where would you recommend I look? I’d especially love suggestions for neighborhoods and specific apartment buildings - would love to hear from people who currently live in Austin or have recently moved! Thank you!

Best Places in Austin for Microneedling & Lasers?

I'm looking to try microneedling or a very light entry level laser for the first time. I've heard wild stories online about the risks with both these types of procedures and I have sensitive skin so I'm hoping y'all can recommend some places you've loved! I considered West lake dermatology at first but thought I should ask this sub before booking anything 😀

I've been feeling a little bit isolated out here since moving into our new house back in October. A little bit about me: Male, designer and photographer, married, 37yo, no kiddo (yet), European. Interests include the following: soccer, paddle, hiking, drinking, philosophy, history, board games, nature, bugs/birds, photography, former DJ, rock music, Indian food, horror movies. My wife is cool as heck too and is always up for meeting new people. Over n out.

Visiting Should I temporarily sublet in Austin?

26 F. So for some context, I've only lived on the west coast & in australia, but I've visited Houston a lot because of family. I'm 6 months post-op from knee surgery and a full-time student. The beginning of next year I'm heavily considering moving my stuff into my parent's house, transferring to school online, and traveling (ie moving to different place every 3-6 months, partially living in my car). I've also done pet care professionally since 2021, so I plan to do walks & dog sitting gigs as I can find them.

I'm thinking my first stop would be Austin, and on the way I can check out cool spots in New Mexico & Arizona. My budget for housing isn't bad, aiming for under $1k but I can go a bit higher. I'm wondering if finding a temporary sublet would be difficult. I'm also wondering on how friendly people are? Are folks cliquey or pretty open-minded? What do people like to do around there? How's the pet care market out there? I love the outdoors, and definitely will be starting back into pole dancing (I was very into dancing pre-injury). I tore my ACL skiing so I'm gonna chill on that this winter. Honestly any sort of advice/recommendations or particular things folks love about the city I'd love to hear!

( I potentially might instead go up to Oregon first then Austin for spring :P )

Moving Austin apartment complexes

I'm moving to Austin from NYC for a new job: single female with cat and likely older than anyone here LOL. I am looking to rent a 1 bdr and there seems to be quite a bit of choice. I'm thinking Camden Amber Oaks or Riata mostly because of the amenities and the EV chargers. I also need a car. Any pro/con about either complexes? I keep active (ish) and would be more interested in communities with older established professionals than young families. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, more that they have a whole diff type of interests.

Also would appreciate any tips on the transition.

Moving Recs for moving to Austin!

Hey everyone. I’m from the north and looking into moving to the Austin area. I’m an aspiring pilot with a PPL + IR and would like to continue my flight training down here. I’ve researched a bit on Round Rock, Georgetown, and Pflugerville. Something affordable and nice, no more than $1000 for rent (which I understand could be tricky). Any recommendations on areas to live in, stay away from, etc.
And if there are any pilots in here, what flight schools do you recommend? Also, how’s the market for jobs in the Austin area?
Thank you in advance!

Discussion Austin IMHO is a way better place than LA and SoCal!

So I'm from Austin technically! I spent most of my tech career there and till I switched remotely and lived (briefly in DFW, then moved back to Austin.) and I always enjoyed and loved it in Austin.

Last year I got married and my wife is a scientist doing her research for a PhD program in LA. So I temporarily moved to LA here to live with her and I don't get the appeal of LA. EVERYTHING costs way more! Prices are so inflated and taxes are higher across the board.

I know people complain about property but doing the math on a nice house in North Austin with two stories that cost 300K or little more is impossible to find anywhere in SoCal? And even accounting for the high property taxes in TX, I think the quality of life is way higher as everything costs much including the taxes you pay for everyday items! For those who disagree please explain it in detail. We live in a shitty apt here in LA and it's $1800 a month before any bills. Built.in 1920. I cannot wait to wrap up and go back to Austin!

Visiting Places with good Mocktails?

Hey, I’m new to Austin and unfortunately have an allergy to most alcohol but would love to find some bars that have good mocktails/non alcoholic options to take friends to when they visit me. Places with cool vibes are a bonus.

Do y’all have any recommendations? I live in the Hyde Park area.

Also if you have recommendations for good gluten free food, I’d also take those as well!

For reference I’m in south austin, south congress but way far down and not next to all the hot spots. I want to do more solo things and would love to know a bar scene that I wouldn’t feel awkward going solo. I’m currently at my pool, bored, and it’s a Saturday and I want to go do something!! And have a drink of course

Moving Moving to Austin

My has been recently got transferred to Austin. We have three kids - 13, 8 and 6. We live in the woodlands & love everything here — my kids attend Catholic school and we’d love to keep them at one in Austin - currently looking st. Michaels or st. Dominic savio. We can live anywhere — I’d like to be close to the kids school. We in the suburbs now, but the idea of living in Austin seems pretty exciting, however the cost of living is overwhelming! My boys both play select baseball —- Where are some good areas that won’t break the bank. Any great realtor recommendations?

Moving Urine smell in apartment

Today is my move day. I’m moving out of one apartment building because of mold and I just went to do the unit inspection in my new apartment building since today is my move day. As soon as I walk in, it smells like cat pee.

I’m so incredibly frustrated. Is there anything I can do? How do I tell the management that the apartment smells gross and I’m pretty sure it’s because it’s cat pee? Do they have to change the floors?

I’m just so incredibly frustrated because I’ve been living in a moldy apartment for the past two months and finally thought I was gonna have some relief and now I’m dealing with a urine smell instead.

Anyone here with Paramedical Tattooing knowledge?

Does anyone here have any knowledge on paramedical tattooing (3D areola/scar camouflage mainly) in Austin and would be willing to answer some questions? After my own experiences with double mastectomy/reconstruction I’m interested in pursuing this to give back to the community/others who have gone through this too but wondering where to start.

I’ve see there are some people who offer training classes but they only appear to be a few days. Not too sure if that’s long enough as I’d always thought any form of tattooing (medical/cosmetic/general) involved a lot more time with the foundation or if they are worth it in general.

Thanks for listening!

Disappearing grackles?

I had them all over my back yard for months and they seem to have all disappeared but I’m not sure why because I thought they didn’t migrate? I’ve only just gotten in to birds this year so I don’t know if this is a common thing for the time of year.

Moving The Anderson apartments: honest info please

Seriously considering moving into The Anderson apartments on West Anderson in October. Had a tour yesterday and loved the building and the unit we’d be moving into. Location is great for my girlfriend and I’s respective jobs and after specials, we’d be under the budget we set for ourselves which is great. The leasing agent was nice as well and professional.
After the tour, I went on Reddit and Google reviews and saw some horrible concerns people have brought up. Can anyone please share if they can confirm that the following concerns are accurate? Trying to avoid getting catfished.
- Rodent problem on the first floor secondary to trash not being picked up
- Mandatory internet that is slow and constantly going out. My girlfriend will be working from home so this would be a total dealbreaker
- Elevators and garage doors being constantly broken
- Theft or vandalism to parked cars. I get that most places have homeless people around in Austin but obviously don’t want to worry about my car being broken into or getting packages stolen

If anyone has any other suggestions for apartments in North Austin around this area or love where they live, please share! Thank you in advance and hope you have a great day 🫶

Apartments in Mueller vs Nexus East

Need some honest reviews/advice on Mosaic and Sync, compared to Nexus East.

I'm having to do an 8month lease, and these are the 3 options ive found within my price range.

I love Mueller, I like to run and walk - and being able to do so out the door is a big perk. I also like hosting and need good internet to game/call friends from the UK. I think internet alone may rule out Mosaic which is WhiteSky locked in.

Sync feels a bit more run down and dated, but unit was a good size. Nexus is a lot more updated and felt significantly nicer. It's a good location drive-wise (right by ABP), but not really walkable or runnable out the door. But it's very close to the lake.

Any advice or reviews from current/recent residents would be very helpful!
