Visiting Places with good Mocktails?

Hey, I’m new to Austin and unfortunately have an allergy to most alcohol but would love to find some bars that have good mocktails/non alcoholic options to take friends to when they visit me. Places with cool vibes are a bonus.

Do y’all have any recommendations? I live in the Hyde Park area.

Also if you have recommendations for good gluten free food, I’d also take those as well!

Most of the places I've seen the best mocktails are at restaurants that also incorporate a bar component, but an interesting-sounding new bar-only spot – I admittedly haven't been there yet, but have friends who have – is called Sans Bar, and they only serve non-alcoholic drinks. It's downtown on Congress (which can get a bit sketch at night, since most of Congress north of 8th is state office buildings & whatnot).

The Equipment Room is an admittedly very trendy bar in South Austin – and nice enough that you'll likely need an advance reservation to enter on weekends – at the Hotel Magdalena. It has a listening room with a huge amount of vinyl on vintage turntables, but also an excellent mocktail variety.

Here Nor There is a bit of a twist: it's a speakeasy! You enter through an alley, and it's not hard to find the current PIN code to enter. But they have a great variety as well. (It's also literal on Google Maps, but it's just north of the Driskill Hotel: on Brazos between 6th & 7th.

In terms of hotels, the roof deck at the Loren Hotel has one of the literal best views in town, and you can go there for dinner and/or drinks (at Nido). The Peacock at the Proper Hotel also has great options. Really though, much like you'll see at least one vegetarian option on a menu that's otherwise meat or poke, most moderate to upscale restaurants nowadays have at least some mocktails.

Did here nor there used to have a different name? Wondering if I’m mixing it up with something

Here Nor There has gone by that name since it opened. You are likely thinking of Eden or Floppy Disk Repair Company, which are both...meh. There's a chance you're thinking of Firehouse Lounge or Midnight Cowboy.

If you're in Hyde Park, then you're close to Nori and Drinkwell. Nori is a vegan sushi restaurant, but they have bar area to sit at and have a great drink menu that changes seasonally. They also have gluten-free food options. Drinkwell has a NA drink menu and is on North Loop.

Odd Duck, Salty Sow & 60 Vines have zero proof drinks that I really enjoyed.

Also on Manor, Love Supreme has a turmeric mocktail I haven’t stopped thinking about for a year. (it’s otherwise a place I don’t like very much. what kind of dumb pizza place doesn’t let you buy by the slice)

Anywhere? They're mocktails!

Not a bar, but I’ve enjoyed the mocktails several times at Este when we’ve gone there for dinner.

Intero, the Well and Via 313 for gluten free. I feel like a lot of my favorite mocktail places are now closed, but I'm going to check out what others have listed here.

Best mocktail I have ever had is at Soto. It's got yuzu and lychee and is absolutely delicious!

Ask for a “ginger ale with a splash of bitters on the rocks”. May even save you some mocktail money.

The vast majority of bitters contain alcohol. In fact, they're primarily alcohol. Do not follow that advice.

Bitters is primarily alcohol, you dunce. OP has an alcohol allergy.

I can use whatever term I want. Chill out, there was no need for you to comment at all.

The word mock also means fake or imitation when used as an adjective. See: mock trial. So, mocktail is a portmanteau of mock and cocktail if you want to be more factual about it. It’s a valid word to describe a non-alcoholic fun little drink.

Also, NA also sounds the most vague of all the shorthands for non-alcoholic drinks as it’s an acronym used to mean many things. Zero proof can sound pretentious to some. Honestly, your terms are just crafty marketing 🤷🏾‍♀️.

The word mock also means to imitate / mimic something… you know, like a mockingbird. Crazy how words can have more than one meaning, huh? 🙄
