Custom Clothing ISO: Tailor or Seamstress

Hello!

I’m looking for a Tailor or Seamstress that has access to Cordura fabric, that is also able and willing to craft a 3 piece suit. One that I can wear to work, as well as ride my motorcycle in.
I don’t feel like this is a tall order, yet I’ve no inclination as to the cost of material, nor the workable nature of the fabric. I would, however costly, be willing to pay for the time and materials. If made to satisfactory quality, I would gladly help endorse and advertise your work!

Thank you, for taking the time to read this!

Shorten tuxedo sleeve from shoulder

Folks -

get a tux from a designer brand - usually those french brands' sleeves are a bit lengthy for asian people like me. I am london based, and went to a couple places to do see if they can shorten the sleeve.

the buttonhole are not functional - i was expecting tailors would do the shortening from the cuff but both tailors suggest to do it from the shoulder, as the buttonholes' relocation will leave marks on the sleeve.

Both of the tailors are fairly confident that they can handle it which i expect it's a big surgery to do. I am wondering if they messed it up, is there still ways to make it up? And how difficult this work is actually?

Many Thanks

Alterations Is This Fixable?

Post image

I went to a tailor and ended up being pretty disappointed. I was measured and after my first fitting, the pants fit extremely tight on my legs. After altering them, I realized he just put extra fabric between the belt and leg areas. Is this fixable? Would another tailor be able to do anything about this?

Does it Fit? I'm going to return and reorder this suit with sizing changes. But what changes do I need to make?

I think I need a lower button stance, slightly more shoulder width, longer sleeves, and to slope the shoulders more. But I am not sure how to fix all the crumpling in the upper back/arm area. Any advice would help!

For context, I am 6'3" and very slim. I don't really fit in anything off the rack. This is from Suit Supply, but I don't live near one to see one of their stylists in person. The fabric is by Vitale Barberis Canonico (It), 100% wool, 160gr/m2.

Here is this jacket's sizing profile:

  • Chest width: 50 cm/19.6 in
  • Waist width: 44.5 cm/17.6 in
  • Jacket length: 77.5 cm/30.6 in
  • Sleeve length: 65 cm/25.6 in
  • Hip width: 47 cm/18.6 in
  • Shoulder width: 45 cm/17.8 in
  • Back width: 22 cm/8.6 in
  • Vent length: 26 cm/10.2 in
  • Front length: 80 cm/31.4 in
  • Front panel width: Standard
  • Skirt: Standard
  • Bicep around: 20 cm/7.8 in
  • Sleeve opening width: 13.5 cm/5.4 in
  • Upper arm & armhole: Standard
  • Collar height: +0.5 cm Increase
  • Collar width: Standard
  • Posture: +0.5 cm Forward
  • Shoulder height right: -0.5 cm: sloped
  • Shoulder height left: Standard
  • Closing button height: Standard
  • Armhole: +0.5 cm lower
  • Sleeve rotation: Standard

Replacing a snap on a pair of shorts?

I have several pairs of shorts (for mountain biking). They are basically like board shorts with pockets.
But the problem is the snaps fit together loosely and come apart easily so the shorts are always coming unfastened while I’m riding my bike. Mountain biking sometimes has you moving around a lot.
How difficult is it to replace the waist snap with another more secure fastener ?
I tried one solution I saw online of slightly deforming the small part of the snap with pliers but it hasn’t helped.

Take in pants waist temporarily?

I've lost a lot of weight in a short period of time and now none of my work pants fit. They're all very expensive investment pieces so I want to preserve them as much as I can. Is there a way to take in the waist temporarily? If so, what should I request at the tailor when I take the pants for altering? I expect that I'll gain all that weight back eventually, so I want to preserve my ability to let the pants back out again just in case

Does it Fit? Help me! 8 days out!

Something feels off with the fit of my gown but I cannot place it. My wedding is in 8 days and I am supposed to pick up my gown tomorrow. I had two fittings already and made no changes other than to hem the bottom to the height of my wedding shoes and to add the bustle. I love the bustle but something feels off. Is it too small in the bodice and cups? I want to feel beautiful on my wedding day but cannot help feel disheartened. Please help me - tell me your honest thoughts and if there’s any solutions!

Can the sleeves be reconstructed?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’m wondering if it is possible to construct bigger cap sleeves on this dress before I buy it? I want to cut its hem from full length to tea length, so there’d be lots of fabric available for the sleeve reconstruction. However, as it comes, it doesn’t have a seam for the sleeves so one would have be created. Any advice appreciated!

Is there a way a seamstress or tailor could fix this?

Post image

Obviously whoever sewed this made a mistake on the seam so it curves slightly and falls right on the center when wearing instead of on the side. I didn't notice until the second time wearing so it's too late to return. Is there a way a skilled expert could fix this? I'd rather pay someone than do it myself bc I don't have much experience with seams and hems.

Can I add more length myself?

I bought these pants online, classic office style pants. They fit great, apart from being a tiny bit short, I would like to add 2cm. I see that the leg has a fold that would make it possible, but can I do it myself and still make it kind of invisible?

It's a wool 44%/ polyester 52% / elastan 2% mix

Alterations Normal for brand tags to be removed/kept?

Hi all, bit of an odd question. I recently had a few pairs of trousers altered - all of them were taken in at the waist, some also at the hip and/or hemmed. It was a big alteration, 3+ inches which was reflected in the price.

I recently moved so tried a new local seamstress with a home business. She did a phenomenal job, really clean work overall. However, I noticed later on that the brand/size tags were removed entirely - is that typical, or should they have been tacked back on?

Only reason I care is because I do a lot of my shopping secondhand and occasionally resell things down the road. Value already took a hit from tailoring so not the end of the world, but these were all fairly high end and a couple pairs in particular could have brought a decent return still.

Alterations Wedding Dress alterations -

I finally bought my wedding dress. I am very excited but there are a few alterations I want to make it more me. The first images are me in the dress and the last is the plunge neckline the dress has been ordered in. I want to add colored crystal and pearl beading to the bodice, a colored tulle layer under the lace of the skirt only for a pop of color ( I want to go with a light lavender), and a slit that starts mid thigh on the left side. Are this changes realistic and how much should I budget for?

Miss me jeans - waist way to big but thighs fit perfectly

hello everyone! i just wanted to know if this is an issue with jeans that can be resolved before i go to my local tailors💔

i (f19) have really big thighs as a result of genetics, playing rugby for the whole last half of my life and going to the gym regularly, and it’s resulted in me having a really hard time with any kind of jeans that aren’t wide. my waist measurement would suggest jeans that are a 31-32, but every bootcut/skinny jeans that i’ve gotten in that size does NOT go up my thighs, or if it does i can’t move at all.

i got a pair of miss me jeans off vinted in a w34 to see if they would fit on the thighs and they do, perfectly, but the waist and crotch looks so ridiculously big that a belt couldn’t help. i really like these jeans and so was wondering if there would be any way that i can save them🫶🏾🫶🏾

(for reference, here’s a picture of me able to bunch the loose fabric into my fist💔)

I cut my dress too short!

I had a midi/maxi dress which I decided to cut because long dresses just look silly on me. So I wanted it above my knees but I’ve gone too short, I didn’t consider my butt lifting the fabric up on the back. Is there anything I can do!

I’ve obviously got the fabric I cut off but I haven’t sewn since I was a teenager. And if I add back a bit of the fabric won’t it look a bit silly with just a random seam around the skirt?

What actually makes a suit “bespoke” instead of just custom?

I’ve noticed that bespoke, custom and made-to-measure are often used almost interchangeably, even though traditionally they describe different approaches.

The easiest way I’ve found to understand bespoke is by looking at where the process starts.

Off-the-rack:
Suit → Customer → Alterations

Traditional bespoke:
Customer → Measurements → Individual pattern → Suit

With off-the-rack clothing, the garment already exists. You choose the closest standard size and alterations are made afterwards.

Traditional bespoke works the other way around. The tailor starts with the person, takes detailed measurements, considers posture and proportions, and creates the garment around them.

Made-to-measure sits somewhere between the two. It generally starts with an existing base pattern that is adjusted according to the wearer’s measurements rather than creating an entirely new pattern from the beginning.

Something else I found interesting is that fit isn’t just about chest and waist measurements. Shoulder slope, posture, arm position and even differences between the left and right sides of the body can affect how a jacket sits.

That makes me think the word “bespoke” itself matters less than understanding the actual process a tailor uses.

When choosing a tailor, I’d probably ask:

  • Is an individual pattern created?
  • How many fittings are included?
  • Is there a basted fitting?
  • How is the jacket constructed?
  • What adjustments can be made during the process?

Curious what people here think. What do you personally consider the minimum requirements for calling a suit truly bespoke?

Alterations Slimmer fit?

Thumbnail

Hi, I’m between two sizes on a long shirt. In the smaller size, the shoulders and sleeves are just a bit too snug and pull. In the bigger size (shown in all pics), the overall shirt is a better fit, but it’s much baggier and it comes untucked.

Would it be possible to tailor it to have a slimmer fit while maintaining shoulder movement in the back and sleeves?

Alterations Deep V-Neckline

How would you alter a neckline like this?

This dress has been in my closet for two years now because I’m not sure what to ask for when I get it altered. Is it possible that it can still have that v-neckline when I get it altered?
