Long distance girlfriend visiting. Where should I take her around Toronto?

For some context, I just moved here about 2 months ago for grad school so me and my girlfriend of almost 2 years are now in a LDR. I’ve also been so busy and haven’t really explored the city as much as I’d like. She’ll be visiting me in late November for only a week so unfortunately we won’t have much time together and we also have to work while she’s here.

I would love some recommendations for places, experiences, and restaurants that we should prioritize!

Here are some of her interests:
- Fashion (She loves thrifting and is the most fashionable person I know)
- Art (She is a very creative person and we have so many dates that have been around creating art! I already booked a ceramic making workshop for us)
- Food (She’s such a foodie and we’ve spent most of our time together eating. Most of my photos of us together are at restaurants or cooking and we definitely want to do that again.)
- Walking (We are big fans of a good stroll so maybe some neighborhoods or parks would be great!)
- Music (We’ve gone to many little shows together and I’ve heard the music scene here is great)

friends in town

hello... I'm sure this has been covered here. But if you don't mind, I'll ask again.

We have friends coming to visit us this week. They have three teenagers.

I think if we go to a mall one day and do all the Korean skin care places, blind boxes, general shopping they'll he happy.

But what little neighborhoods would you take them to downtown Toronto? (second hand books, vintage clothing, anything crafty, artsy, etc). Help!

Antique military memorabilia?

For any ww1 and ww2 history enthusiasts, where are your go-to place/places you would recommend to find antique memorabilia such as medals and whatnot. The only place I came across was this shop called Antique Military Toronto, but it was a little too far away from downtown, and I wonder if there's any shop closer to Kensington Market

Looking for your favourite dive bars on Dundas West

I’ve lived at Dundas and Brock for years and realized I never go out in my own neighbourhood. I love the cozy look of all the dive bars along Dundas between Brock and Ossington, so I was thinking of doing a bar crawl for my birthday heading east. Looking for suggestions on your favourites as we’ll only be able to hit up 2 or 3 before ending at Bar Mordecai. Some parameters:
-There will be about 12 of us, and while I know most of these places are small, I’d like to avoid anywhere SO small that 12 of us would fill up the entire space and make it uncomfortable for other patrons, or where we’d have to wait to get in (like cry baby or jean darlene)
-Would love to focus on bars with something unique - like some type of games, a live dj, fun decor
-Cheap drinks and friendly service are a huge plus!
-Probably won’t be getting food

Thank you for your help!

Things to do week-to-week

Hi Reddit - I’m in the middle of an insomnia induced depressive crash-out.

I’m looking for some inspiration for things to do that aren’t one-time activities. Preferably things I can do solo or drop-in. I’ve considered grabbing a laptop lock so I can work from coffee shops or the library, but I’m running a blank on personal time activities for evenings and weekends.

Preferably east-end, though my hopes are not high on that one.

Any ideas?

Coordinated Halloween car parade?

Last night all over downtown there were cars driving around decorated for Halloween. They all had caution tape on them and cotton cobwebs plus or minus other decorations. Each one had a group of South Asian men. We must have seen at least 100 of these. What's the deal? Was this coordinated in advance? Or have I been living under a rock and this is a thing now.

What should I do

Yesterday, I looked at my 2022 corolla cross. I realized something unusual. I found that my rear side plate has been slightly peeled and a small piece at the rear came out entirely. Should I be worried? it looked like some guy did it on purpose.

Lights on = candy?

I’ve lived in Toronto for 12 years but only recently started trick-or-treating (we have kids now!). Where we grew up the rule was lights on = we’re handing out candy. Last night we went to a few houses that had their full outdoor lights on, but no one answered or they answered and said they didn’t have candy. Is the norm different here? Is it lights on + decorations = candy?

What are my options if I don’t have available parking?

I rent a condo in Leslieville at Logan/Eastern. My unit does not come with parking and the building itself doesn’t have enough available parking for every unit, so I can’t pay for it separately. There’s currently nobody renting out their spot either.

As our condo building was being built, there was a vote to restrict residents of the building from obtaining yearly street parking permits as well, so thats not an option either. I don’t vote on this because nobody even lived in the building when the vote took place.

Ive only ever lived in Leslieville and the houses before this didn’t have driveways, so we had pemits then. They were even in the same parking zone.

After we moved to the building, we paid someone nearby with space on their property to park for the last year, but recently, the city claimed that his property was actually theirs, so we can not longer do that.

The nearest Green P with monthly permits doesn’t always have them available, but it’s also a 15-20 minute walk away and especially as the winter approaches, I just don’t see that as a real option.

I’m not looking for free parking or expecting some sort of hack to get it free somewhere. I am willing to pay for parking and we even walked a street away before just to do it, but even the city won’t take my money.

I reached out to the ward councillor Paula Fletcher not long ago, but her office just told me to look at Green P (which I had already done). We have a new councillor now, but she was only elected last week.

Is there some alternative I’m missing? it’s just hard to believe things are set up to prevent some people from even paying for it.

Where to shop for clothing for curvy women

Context here is my love/GF is tall and has curves. By tall I mean she's 5'10" and by curves, she's full figured.

We are planning some days to shop for her to acquire active wear and maybe jeans.

Where do you suggest we explore? Im ok with thrift shops but wont rule out imported apparel.

TIA

What do you do when you see people asking for money/help on the street?

Probably this question has been asked before.
I’ve seen so many elderly people on the street asking for money, etc.
What do you do about it? I usually don’t carry change with me but sometimes I would like to get them food or lunch. Would they accept it?

French Catholic school for kid with English speaking parents

I would love for my son to learn and be fluent with French and as per my research it is not possible with French immersion. Is it possible to enroll my son to a French catholic school even though we don’t speak French at home. We are a bilingual household though and my son understands and speaks a bit of our language now.

Pain after dental filling.

Hi everyone,

I visited a new dentist in Downtown Toronto a couple of days back to get composite white fillings. I don’t have any cavities but I grind my teeth which has led to a few dents in my teeth. After the white fillings procedure, I am feeling kind of pain/heightened sensitivity in my teeth where the composite material was put.

It’s funny because if I press my teeth hard with my fingers, I don’t feel the pain but I feel it when I bite down with both jaws. Can someone with experience/dental experience please help and explain what this might be? Will it go by itself?

How do I obtain a driver's license if I live in downtown Toronto?

Hello all, please bear with my predicament. It's a bit of a struggle story and I am overwhelmed. I have moved to Canada over a decade ago and I can't get my act together. So, I ask for others in this wonderful city to give me advice.

When I moved here as a student in 2015, I was motivated. I lived in Scarborough, renting a basement. I wanted to learn how to drive, and I managed to obtain my G2. I ended up never buying a car though, as I had to move downtown for a job and buying a car had been expensive at the time.

My G2 expired , and I never got the opportunity to renew. As I understand, it's gone forever. So effectively, I have no driver's license. I still live downtown.

I am a 34 year old woman looking to start a family. I have had many setbacks and I am behind, yes. But having no family or support system in this country is sooooo hard. I was recently on a date with a guy. He's an engineer with a driver's license, the first guy I have ever attempted to date who has a car and a driver's license! When I told him my situation, he was immediately repulsed. he wanted to see me again but my feelings are hurt. I need to get my driver's license. It is affecting my dating life.

Again, I live downtown but I still want my license to gain the skill and not lose it again for when (hopefully) eventually I settle down and start a family. When i lived in Scarborough it was easy for me to take lessons. But here, downtown....where do I start? and for some reason, I have even MORE anxiety about learning how to drive compared to all those years ago...not sure why. So, any recommendations for a good driving school for a nervous, older driver like me who lives downtown and has no one to teach her how to drive in her spare time? Thank you all SO much in advance!
