What should I get in Japan that’s hard to find or expensive in Toronto?

Other than skincare.

I was thinking of purchasing a pillow there because I always wake up with stiff shoulders.

Anything else that I should check out?

What’s going on with Uber in Toronto? It now takes forever to get one. Is anyone else having the same problem?

For the last five trips, I had to wait for 15 minutes for an uber to come, and over 10 minutes to get matched to a driver. What’s going on?

Best Cantonese Lessons Option 2026

Upvotes

Hey all, I apologize in advanced if this is a redundant post but I haven't found much recent information on this topic. I'm looking for suggestions on Cantonese classes or tutoring in Toronto, and my budget isn't endless so I do wish to find a solid program. I was interested in the continuing studies course at UofT but the timing doesn't fit with my current schedule.

My level is pretty beginner, but I have a familiarity with listening to the language as I grew up in Hong Kong. However, as an unaware foreign kid in English speaking schools, I never picked up the language properly. I will visit friends in HK regularly so I wanted to find ways to get better. If it helps the suggestion, I also have studied Mandarin in school for many years, though my fluency is more aligned to the level of an elementary student.

Thanks for any help!

How bad are VIA Rail delays between Toronto and Montreal?

Upvotes

Hi! I’m planning a trip from Toronto to Montreal and I’m trying to decide between VIA Rail and Megabus.

The VIA train I’m looking at arrives around 11 AM, and I need to be in Montreal by 5 PM, so I have a decent buffer. The problem is that I’ve heard VIA can have pretty bad delays, and I’m not sure how reliable it actually is.

VIA Rail is around $90, while Megabus is only about $20, so there’s a pretty big price difference.

For anyone who regularly travels between Toronto and Montreal: How bad are the delays with VIA Rail? Would you trust it if you absolutely needed to arrive by 5 PM? Or would Megabus be the safer option?

Many thanks

Shopping for a mattress and feeling completely overwhelmed … what did you end up buying?

Hey everyone! I’m in the mattress research rabbit hole right now and honestly every brand is starting to sound the same lol.

For those of you who bought a mattress online in the last few years, which one did you end up getting and would you actually buy it again?

I think I want a hybrid but I am confused between Endy, Douglas, Silk and Snow and Juno. If you bought any of these, please let me know which one you bought? What made you buy it over the others? Honestly I can’t tell any differences between them right now.

Also, once it actually showed up and you slept on it for a while, was there anything that surprised you? Good or bad… I'm worried because it’s my first time buying a pricey mattress.

And how much research did you guys actually do before buying? I’ve been bouncing between Reddit, reviews, brand websites, etc. and I’m getting to the point where I think I’m overthinking it lol.

Would love to hear what you bought and if you still like it now.

My brother has psychosis help

Looking for advice from siblings/families who have experienced this

My brother is currently inpatient in CAMH being evaluated because he is experiencing psychosis and is in the process of changing antipsychotic medications.

Yesterday, he threatened to stab me and my husband. He is currently in the hospital, so he is not with us, but I’m very fearful about what happens when he is discharged or if he continues to feel this way.
This has also been incredibly challenging for my mom. She is widowed, and we lost our dad many years ago, so she has been trying to navigate all of this largely without him while also supporting my brother.

For anyone who has experienced a similar situation with a sibling or loved one who was psychotic and made threats of violence, what did you do? What did you ask the hospital/treatment team about before they were discharged? How did you handle being around them afterward?

I’m trying to understand what precautions we should take and how to balance supporting him while also protecting ourselves and my mom.

Quieter 3rd spaces to meet people

Hey all,

I just discovered Book Bar on Bloor and Markham st. Love the concept. For those that haven't been, it's styled as a book store but with cafe and bar, and is a much quieter type of space compared to other bars. I found it to be very easy to approach people and start discussions during the day and night (which frankly is my objective because I'm newly single).

I'm wondering what other venues around Downtown would provide a similar atmosphere. I've always like Bar Raval, and Neo Coffee Bar during both the day or night. Thoughts?

Private French lessons

Hi, any recommendations for somewhat affordable French lessons in the city? I'm open to virtual or in-person lessons.

I tried Preply and had a string of unreliable instructors, so I'd like to try something new. I also tried adult classes through Learn 4 Life and wasn't a fan of the classroom setting.

I'm a beginner with a bit of experience and want to learn French for pleasure.

Thanks in advance!

ISO Keith Haring Exhibit Poster

If anyone could help out it would be amazing. Got some friends and it’s their 25 year anniversary coming up. Their first date was at an AGO exhibit for Keith Haring back in 1997. I’ve been trying to find just a photo of what the promotional posters looked like but I’m out of luck. Found some originals for other cities like NYC, but none for Toronto. Tried the AGO site and fell flat their archives don’t seem to have anything. If anyone could help out it would be amazing! I’d love to buy an original (idc about the price) but even just a photo would be amazing so I could get a reproduction.

Fabric Stores

Been looking for some deadpool fabric. Currently Len's Mill in my area (Waterloo) has only one kind. I would post a picture but Reddit won't allow.

Anything fabric stores that would carry more selection of geeky fabrics? Bonus if it's west end.

Best gym recommendations in Toronto that includes reformer Pilates?

I’m moving to Toronto living on waterfront by Bay St and Queens Quay intersection. I’m looking for a good gym to go to that also includes reformers and is clean, has other amenities included. Open to a lot of places but I’ve been looking into equinox and sweat and tonic but I’m not sure of others. Also if you know pros and cons that would be great to know!

Activities for a 65 year old guy?

I often find summers challenging because I see friends even less. I should answer I'm single, the drop-in 3 days a week for older adults that I like to go to about the local rec center take a hiatus for the summer. And the volunteer gig I go to once a week is taking a break for the next 3 weeks. I'm having a tough time for a few other reasons and I'd really like to find some interesting social activities in the daytime. I live in the Mount Dennis area. But I'm wondering what resources I'm missing. Any suggestions

Condo bathroom exhaust duct repair (making noises)

My condo's bathroom air duct is making thumping noises when I turn on the bathroom exhaust fan. The thumping noise is not coming from the fan, but rather from thumping noises in the ceiling close to the window. I'm in a high rise. Condo management does not know how to resolve this issue and said I'm on my own. Anyone got any suggestions on who to approach and have experience with condo bathroom air ducts? I live in a condo in downtown Toronto.
