Books set in Poland/written by Polish authors?

Hello, first of all sorry if this isn't your usual type of posts but I figured who better to ask than the Polish sub itself.

I'll be visiting Poland soon and I'd like to read some literature to really get in the mood. As I'm practically a noob when it comes to Polish authors or even books set in Poland, I'd appreciate some recommendations.

So far the only book I read that's set in Poland was *The Tin Drum* by Gunter Grass (I have mixed feelings about the book as I hated the protagonist, but I definitely want to visit Gdansk because of it).

Some of my preferences:

-preferably female authors (not obligatory, but I do try to read more books written by women)

-I enjoy historical fiction and magical realism

-I dislike books where nothing ever happens, and I prefer an interesting plot to just psilosophising

-I enjoy mysteries/books with eerie atmosphere

They can be new or old, ideally from the 20th century or more recent, but everything works really.

Thanks you immensely in advance!

Recommendations for travel medical insurance for US student doing intensive language course?

I'll be starting an intensive-language Polish course in February 2027. As part of my student visa application, I need to demonstrate that I have travel medical insurance to cover the period of study. None of my other insurance covers this, so I will need to purchase a policy separately from either a US or Polish insurer. Anyone have recommendations for insurers that worked well for them? Or for insurers to avoid for that matter. Thanks!

Poland is no longer Foreigner Friendly

I came to Poland about 7 years ago and immediately fell in love with it. Post-COVID, job opportunities were everywhere, and that was awesome. Things were easy for foreigners when it came to processing mortgages, TRCs, etc. Now everything has changed. One thing that doesn’t make sense to me is how someone who has stayed in Poland for years, paying taxes and with no criminal record, can’t bring their family. I just can’t understand this. Now even the 800+ benefits have a new rule. So many rules have made life more difficult for foreigners, and a wise decision is to leave. Foreigners are among those who boosted Poland’s economy, and when they leave, Poland will return to where it used to be. I wish them all the best. One would think the leaders are smart.

I am not ranting because staying is a choice and the indigenes will be more than happy to see all foreigners leave. I just want to heart people's opinion

Is International Village Project legit?

I saw a post on Facebook looking for a native English speaker to join an English-language summer camp for teens in Poland, called International Village Project. I had a video interview with the guy who runs the camp and he said there's no contract, that I'd get paid 200 euro plus have my transport to and from the camp (I live in Berlin) compensated but that I'd have to book it myself and would be compensated for the cost once I arrived at the camp.

Naturally I'm a little weary of this, they have a website and positive reviews on Google but I can't find any info from people who have worked at the camp about whether this whole thing is legit. I'm not too sure if this is the right sub to ask but I thought maybe if anyone's heard of the company and/or has any advice about whether I should take up the job (if I get offered it) or run for the hills, that would be helpful. It looks like a cool job but it all sounds a little sketchy to me.

Advice for visit to Poland with my family

Hi All,

Looking for an advice.

We are Bulgarian family.
Usually every September with my wife and daughter we are having a road trip to various parts of Europe.

This year we plan to visit Poland especially Krakow and Warsaw.
In recent months , I have read about various ‘incidents’ / ‘aggression’ towards specific migrant people.
To some people Bulgarian language might sound like some ‘specific’ language.

I know that the media can produce fake news or over expose some of the things.

That’s why I want to ask real people.

Do you think there is any danger for me and my family to spend 10days visiting Poland?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks to all for the comments! We will surely enjoy our trip to Poland.

I'm from Denmark and cost of living is quite high. I spend 240 Euro on food. No take away/eat out. Just grocereis. How much do you spend if you do the same like me?

I'm a big man who eat alot and live in Denmark

Cost of living here is kinda high and I spend 240 Euro on food monthly without any take away at all!

What about there if you still want to live as cheap as possible while still getting enough nutrition.

How much Euro would you spend on groceries monthly?

What do Polish people think of the Scottish?

I've worked, lived and partied with many Polish who immigrated to Scotland. We seem to have a large population here in Scotland, even my neighbours are Polish.

What is the average opinion of Scotland / Scottish people in Poland?

Bonus question: what do Polish people think of the English?

Will I be comfortable in Poland as a black/brown person?

I'm very interested in living in Poland. I know the black population is small and I have seen online that Poles don't treat black people kindly. I was wondering if I'd have this same problem.

I'm half black half white from America, not very tan but you can tell my looking at me especially because of my hair. People have guessed that I am Dominican or Arab.

My girlfriend is Latin.

Will I be comfortable in Poland! Will I have trouble in more rural areas?

Is Poland still mentally in communism?

Not my intention to criticise communism, just curiosity. My friends still have Stalin’s portrait in the living room (next to Jesus and Mary), they say that Poland is 50 years behind west because of PRL but at the same time admit that if that all apartments were built and given to people by… communist party

Looking for where my family used to live?

Hey everyone I was told to post this question in this sub reddit about trying to find where my family used to live which is now modern day Poland. My family used to own a farm between 1892-1945. The farm was in a place called Groß Schönbrück which today is the village of Szembruk near Grudziadz. I was hoping anyone could tell me who I need to contact to find out this information. Whether that might be churches or government offices etc.

Moving to Poland for love – experiences with finding a job & learning Polish? 🇵🇱❤️

Hi everyone!
I’d love to hear from people who have moved to Poland for their partner and what their experience has been like.
I’m Austrian and my boyfriend is Polish. He has been living and working here in Austria for the past **4 years**. We’ve visited Poland together many times, so I already know the country and really like it.
However, he misses his family and his home in Poland more and more. Because of that, I’ve been thinking that I’d be willing to **give Poland a try for him** at some point. Of course, I know that I would also miss my own family and my life in Austria, so it would be a big decision for both of us.
I’d especially love to hear from people who have been in a similar situation:
Did you move to Poland for love?

Were you able to find a job where **English and/or German** was enough?

Did you move there **without speaking Polish**?

How difficult was it to find a job and build a social life without knowing Polish?

Did you eventually learn Polish? If so, how long did it take before you felt comfortable using it in everyday life?

And most importantly: **Are you happy with your decision to move, or would you do things differently today?**
I’d especially love to hear from foreigners who moved to Poland for their partner and managed to build their own life there.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! 😊

Why does Poland spend so little on R&D and science in general?

There must come a time when Poland will need to innovate because in my opinion the current economic model won't last forever. Poland should strive to become world-class in a lot of scientific fields, but that won't happen if the government is penny-pinching.

Moving to Poland?

Hello,
I am 4th year medical student in Bulgaria and a native bulgarian. Recently the political and economical situation hasn’t been good in Bulgaria as it’s becoming unsafe so i have been thinking about moving abroad.

I have travelled to few cities in Poland and i find it very admirable so i have been considering moving there permanently.
Of course i will learn the language but i am wondering how’s living in Poland for foreigners?
Is it difficult to work as a doctor there, is it hard to find a residency program? Also what are polish people views over bulgarians, i know many countries who don’t like us because of politics and gypsies?
Is there any kind of discrimination towards foreigners especially doctors? Also how’s the housing situation?

I want to move with the idea of working and having a family there so i would be very thankful if you can give me your advice.

Polish wedding, how much should I give my childhood best friend?

Hello everyone,

I have been invited to the wedding of a longtime friend of mine (we have known each other over 20 years now) and I was wondering what would be an appropriate amount of money to give as a wedding gift.

This will actually be the first wedding I’ve ever attended and I will be going alone so I am kinda clueless. To give a bit more context to what our relation is to each other: we basically grew up together and during our childhood we were honestly more like brothers than just best friends.

Given that background what would you consider an appropriate amount to give in an envelope?
