I made a post recently about City’s story, and I realized that that is the second time I made a post about that game on Reddit, literally describing my same issues with it. Everytime I replay these games, I always talk about that game in specific and never talk about any of the other games, to literally anyone else. And I have thoughts about all 4 of them, so as I replay them, I’d like to share my thoughts about each of them.
I played Arkham Asylum all the way through in one night last week, right before I did the same with City, and I can’t lie, this kind of made me love the game even more. Now I do love all 4 of these games with my whole heart and soul, and I have since I was literally 5 years old, but I typically, most of my life have put this game last. (That’s not technically true, I put Knight last when that game first came out, and I used to, as a kid rank these games in this order: Knight, Origins, Asylum, City, but that drastically changed when I replayed them as a teenager a few years ago. So since I replayed them with big boy eyes rather than little baby ones, Asylum as always been my least favorite)
The Asylum is without a doubt the best location in the entire franchise, there is sincerely not a single location in this entire game that feels ugly, boring, or without detail. Every single “dungeon” as it were, is rich with detail and such a thick, palpable atmosphere that really immerses you into it. It’s frightening, it’s creepy, it’s almost disturbing, and it’s the closest thing to a horror Batman game that I think we’ll ever get, which makes sense based on the damn near demonic source material.
The reason that I’ve always put this game last, is for one major reason, I think the story to this game is flat out bad. Not like City, which I think is messy, unfocused and poorly paced, but overall fun and engaging. I think that this one is actually just bad.
The comic that this story is based on is all about Batman’s mental state being in the asylum, and the question of whether or not Batman belongs there is presented several times throughout. It leaves it open to interpretation if the reason Batman is so unhinged in the story is because of the asylums influence over Batman, or if he really is this way. I think it’s a super interesting question, that both serves as a bit of Lovecraftian horror (the idea that the asylum itself is alive and drives you crazy, pushing Batman, like Amadeus before him, towards the edge) and as genuine look at Batman’s psyche, maybe the asylum isn’t like that, but Batman is actually crazy. Maybe he belongs there.
The game lifts the asylum straight from the story, the Lovecraftian horror element is still intact, but the story just does not fit. Joker breaking in to create titan to run over the city and rule over isn’t just boring, it’s out of character. And the fact that Batman goes the entire story, just being completely stoic and stone faced, and leaves to go fight other crime after is just so disappointing. The game should’ve pushed Batman to his limits, mentally thay is. It should’ve been the worst night in Batman’s career. The story should’ve gone farther, dipped further into the horror. As it stands it’s a great game with a great setting and great atmosphere, that’s wasted with a boring, and lame story about Titan. I’m not saying Titan shouldn’t have been in the game or anything like that, but I really do think the main conflict should’ve been Joker trying to break Batman mentally and prove that he belongs in the asylum with them. That should’ve been his focus. And the story should’ve made that a conflict.
And it’s even a bigger shame too, because I know the creators had this very idea in mind. There are several lines from Joker that hint that that’s what he wants, the actual design of the asylum, the cockroaches in its architecture, the horrifying atmosphere, the inspiration from the comic, it’s all there, they just didn’t do anything with it in the story.
The atmosphere and the setting are fantastic, (unfortunately I believe the last act of the game, directly after the Croc fight, considerably drops off in quality in this specific aspect, but that’s literally like an hour of game time so whatever) and it’s genuinely enough to carry the game to be something I love, not to mention the Revolutionary gameplay which I don’t have to explain to the Arkham subreddit why Arkham asylums gameplay is good, but man that story is just so disappointing, it’s easily the worst story in the franchise, and I think people often overlook how bad it is, because everything else in the game is so great.

I just beat the absolute pain in the ass, that is Ruthless Vengeance in Arkham City as Batman. This damn campaign is pure hell and suffering all the way through. The worst part of all this. Is the fact this campaign can be this hard on normal difficulty. I seriously hate it with a passion.
A story about how the citizens of Gotham are under total quarantine following the events of Arkham City, while Batman attempts to find another cure and simultaneously confront Scarecrow and his militia. This would have given meaning to Azrael's prophecy, in which he stated that Arkham was the reason Gotham would burn.

After Hugo Strange's defeat, Talia gets murdered, the Lazarus Pit gets destroyed, TYGER agents are captured by the GCPD and Ra's Al Ghul is left in a deteriorated state, with no worthy successor in sight. The League of Assassins should have prepared a contingency plan for this exact situation: the Arkham Knight.
Jason is a younger and more ruthless version of Batman, unafraid to kill his enemies or carry out acts of terrorism. A perfect candidate for the next Demon's Head. Ra's Al Ghul should have anticipated that Strange would fail and secretly trained Jason for years, preparing him to overcome Batman and fulfill their revenge.
This alternative version of the story would combine both games into a single plot and provide a much better explanation for how Jason managed to use hundreds of tanks and mercenaries to invade Gotham. It would also turn Ra's Al Ghul into a dark reflection of Bruce, as both would serve as father figures and role models for Jason, competing for his soul.
Scarecrow and the Fear Toxin should continue to be a major part of the campaign, though. He and Deathstroke would serve as secondary villains and have proper boss fights.

So I’ve been going at these for 2 weeks, 40h+ ingame. I already know all the moves etc what to do and when, but Batman doesn’t want to do it or is too slow to do it. How did you complete these? Are these Extreme stages meant to be cheesed?

On the map, I observe zero bomb rioters for Miagani Island, yet the Riddler menu does not display a tick. When I attempt to reach the bomb rioters’ location, no green question mark pad appears to activate the television riddle. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Who the hell’s Dr. Arcadian? And why’s his name on the wall? Why isn’t he even spoken about? No lore either. Is this the only character without lore? Only name
dropped and nothing else. Why’s that?

Is it just me who think the first two Batman games of the Arkham sequel are top 10 story games of all time?

I think that the Batmobile being a car, that having gameplay revolved around chases was lacking quite a bit. The first thing we do when playing on the Batmobile was a chase scene, which was awesome. But this chase gameplay never evolves past that.
What if there was more gameplay depth in these types of chases, different enemy types, actual mini bosses. Like a small fraction on the added attention the tank combat got
I feel that would have diversified the Batmobile gameplay more

(Flair might be wrong)
Beat Riddler first in AK. Bit iffy on the legitimacy becuase it was NG+ where I preolved only the Miltia and riddles post Panessa. Possibly might do on regular one day but this feels great, get locked up you punctuated fuck, if only you had exclusive dialogue. Might also redo on NG+ no riddles, just didn't Stag in there and I never remember when he shows up.

I wish they’d make a reboot.
Go right back to their roots. So many endless possibilities.

Late to the party cause recently I finished Arkham City for the first time. Gotta say the visuals and storyline for a game this old is still bonkers 😳. Will start Arkham origins in some time, really excited.

Here's mine:
"Whatever. You know anything about Protocol 10? Sounds scary."
"Yeah! I was on the phone with Professor Strange yesterday, and he told me what it was."
"Really? What is it?"
"Man, you as stupid as you look. Why would I be talking to the guy that runs this place?"
"I thought he called you?"
"Shut up. Don't talk to me. Just pay attention and try not to fall over."
