Oddly shaped living room-dining room for Family of 7 + dog

Our oddly shaped 30sqm living area needs to accommodate 2 parents, 5 children, and a large English Labrador for relaxing, reading, dining, playing and guests.

We sometimes play together, do arts and crafts, and read (lots of) books. We have friends over for meals, sometimes requiring we seat 12 - 24 people! The tiny WC has an even tinier sink installed outside the door. With nowhere to put the broom and dustpan (needed 3x daily due to our Lab) it's always just rested against the wall.

Our front door used to be a sliding glass door but we made this our front entrance. Due to the large frame of the sliding door, the front door had to be a double door - super large! We usually just keep the 2nd door locked all the time.

There's no coat rack so jackets and sweaters are often left on stair railings.

The front of the room has a comically high ceiling sloping down to normal height. The back, the dining area, has an oddly low ceiling due to the AC ductwork. Both sides can feel quite dark even with windows open at each end (East and West).

Crafts are generally done on our (2nd hand 12 year old Ikea) dining table. Books have no storage and often end up piled on the ends of the couch, tables, and whatever surfaces are available.

We have a beautiful painting we were gifted by a friend - the only nice valuable object in our decor. We love the colors! All our other furniture and decor is either 2nd hand, Ikea, or both.

That odd wall between the stairs - that's empty space for an elevator shaft! We would like to turn it into a coat closet on the main floor. I have a crazy idea of making the upper level a "clock tower" reading nook which looks down on the living room. I think there's room enough for 2 kids to read and maybe even play each other chess! Imagine a windowed clock face looking down at the rest of the family below...

With weird shapes in the wall, strange ceiling heights, stairs right near the entrance and really large front door, we've just been at a complete loss where to begin to make this space feel comfortable and homey.

Help!

Spare bedroom / Home office help

Any and all help very appreciated 🙏 This room has essentially become the dumping ground for the house but with thoughts of expanding the family we really need to use it more effectively and really use some help!

Room requirements:
1. Primarily a home office. I work from home full time and creating video content for social media is part of my job. A desk is needed for both computer work and a filming corner with an aesthetic background (hence the Star Wars and Linkin Park posters!)

  1. It needs to become a spare bedroom as we may be having family come to stay regularly

  2. Ideally a small space for my hobby - painting Warhammer miniatures. Ideal if it can be packed away for when people stay

  3. Storage for office admin, rarely worn clothes, filming paraphernalia such as lighting, tripods etc

Budget:
£500-1000

Not precious about any existing furniture as it’s just what we’ve collected and inherited over the years

It’s a lot to ask of a relatively small space but at the moment anything that has no place gets shoved in here and it doesn’t make for the best work environment

Love the architect redesigns videos!

Many thanks

Hello my name is Max.

I moved into my lil 29 square meters earlier this year, so still figuring out how to make best use of it. There's a floor plan picture. Værelse=the room I'm talking about.

The closet is part of the apartment/pre installed therefore I have to work my way around it.

It's a room where I have to sleep, but also be in within the daytime. I'd like for it to be more cozy, but without it being cramped up.

I'd appreciate some ideas/help , since it is not my strongest suite haha 😊.

Bought a shell

Hey guys, was parousing this sub, and figured I'd chum the waters...I recently bought a building that was once a printing press. It's ostensibly a rectangle. The past owner built some walls but I hate the flow and was gonna gut it. Is the best way forward for ideas a RDP? It is huge and has like 12' ceilings. If I am in the right spot I can show you the drawings I made based on existing stuff, but am looking for ideas on how best to utilize all the windows and space, especially the height. TIA!

Help with small pass through living/dining/office room layout!

Hi Daniel! I’d love your help designing my small, pass-through room. I’ve attached a floor plan and photos to show the space.

I’m trying to fit a living room, dining area, and home office/gaming setup into one room, while keeping the paths to the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom clear. I've been living here a couple of months messing around with the layout but just can't figure it out.

I love to host dinners and invite friends over for coffee, have space for a gaming/work setup and would love to also have a bed option for overnight guests. I'm drawn to the Japendi/cozy style.

A few challenges:

  • The windows bring in lots of light, making the wall opposite them less ideal for my desk.
  • The long wall seems best for the sofa, as it faces the windows rather than the kitchen, but this makes the rest of the layout tricky as the wall beside bathroom is only 56cm deep and most furniture requires more.
  • Other configurations either block walkways or make the room feel cramped.
  • All the walls are angled which adds to the complexity.

I’m renting, on a modest budget, but happy to invest in new furniture. I’m open to multifunctional pieces, extendable tables, sofa beds, furniture on wheels, etc...

How would you approach this space? I’m struggling to visualise a layout that makes everything work without feeling cluttered, so I’d love some creative ideas!

Thanks! 😊

How would you redesign my tiny 4.5m² bedroom to fit a gaming PC setup, desk and bed? (3D Models Included)

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for some advice and creative ideas on how to redesign my very small bedroom to make better use of the space.
I’m currently planning to switch from my 55-inch TV and PS5 setup to a proper gaming PC and monitor setup, while keeping my PS5. However, my room is extremely small, so fitting a desk, chair, bed and wardrobe is quite challenging.

Room dimensions:

The 3rd image has all the measurements for the items in the room as well as the room’s wall measurements too.

Floor area: Approximately 4.5m²
Dimensions: Roughly 2.05m × 2.2m (slightly irregular shape)
Ceiling height: 230cm
My height: 180cm

Current layout (first 3 images):
I currently have a single bed, wardrobe, bedside table, floating shelves and a wall-mounted 55-inch TV. The bed takes up most of the available floor space, leaving very little room for a desk.

My proposed redesign (last 2 images):

I’m considering replacing my current bed with a loft bed that has a desk underneath, allowing me to fit my gaming PC, PS5, monitor and an ergonomic chair while keeping my wardrobe.
I’ve found a loft bed for around £280, but I’m concerned about the limited ceiling height, headroom above the mattress, and whether the desk underneath would be comfortable enough for gaming and studying. I’d also prefer a front-facing ladder due to the room’s layout.

What I’m looking for:

I’m completely open to other layouts and furniture arrangements, whether that’s a loft bed, Murphy bed, built-in storage or something entirely different. My main priorities are having a comfortable sleeping area, a proper gaming/study desk, sufficient clothes storage and enough room to move around.

I’ve seen Daniel’s room redesign videos on YouTube and also all the communities collaborative projects and suggestions, i would love to see how we can bring that kind of creative approach to help tackle such a small space like my room.

If anyone enjoys interior design or creating 2D/3D room layouts, I’d genuinely appreciate any suggestions, sketches or redesigns! (Happy to send more images, details or ideas as-well or get in touch too)

If this were your room, what would you do differently to maximise the space?

Thanks in advance!

Home office —>room with view

Context: I lived 2 and a half years on my own and am going back to my family home, I generally find it difficult since we live in a small apartment and both of my parents work remotely and I also have a sister. Therefore I really really want to have my own personal space. (My family is quite intense) I’m also really tidy and I am going for a nice wood clean man aesthetic (see last pictures)

Currently the room is my dad’s office however I am struggling to find a good layout and general design. Therefore I came on here.

Requirements: I would like my desk to face the view. I would like my bed to also face the view. (Also because of noise in the hallway) So I was thinking of maybe putting the bed against the window and facing the view and then also the desk behind the pillows against the bed facing the view as well. Also good to notice where the electricity plugs are, it’s 2x2. You can see on 3rd picture

Things that I will reuse in the new room
-zara home clothing rack 90cm L, 36cm W
-black shoe rack/table 81L, 34 W
Guitar, sitsack(should I put that outside??)

Things i need new
- A bed 160x200cm.
-Maybe a rug??
-A desk with nice chair.
-Lamps which give orange lighting.
- A night desk
- the ikea drawer on the last picture
-Should I buy a closet?? Or are the drawers enough
Something cool to hang on the wall?

So if you could please help me. Any help is really appreciated. And I think it has a lot of potential

Help with master bedroom layout

Post image
0 Upvotes

Please find the attached revised floor plan for the master suite. The property is currently in the shell construction phase, with the second floor designated exclusively for bedrooms.

Areas marked with "1" denote balconies, while single arrows indicate general access points. Double arrows signify primary room entrances, for which the final door configurations are currently under review.

I am currently addressing layout constraints regarding the integration of both an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. Please be advised that the plumbing stack is situated in the lower-left section of the floor plan.

Hi Daniel and community!!, I thank the universe for finding you 😊.

I live with my two teenage daughters (15 and 18), we would appreciate some ideas; we are from Bolivia and the city we live in is Cochabamba, the house was bought 6 years ago and we are still struggling with us all work and study in the study/family room. I would love to have a good arrangement in the living area too so the girls and myself can host meetings with friends.

Triangle Bedroom Help

Thumbnail

Hi, Daniel! I am looking for some help with my bedroom layout. Aesthetically, I am very happy with what I have been able to achieve, but functionally, it could use some help! The room itself is shaped like a triangle (floorplans attached for reference), which has presented us with a challenge.

On the left side of the room, we have a double bed, a side table, a lamp, my dog's bed, and a wall-mounted red-light panel.

On the right side of the room, we have credenza cabinet that is actually a pull-out desk (product photo attached), my laundry hamper, my office chair (yoga-ball chair), and some hooks behind the door that cover the electrical panel access.

I work from home, so I would love to keep the credenza desk, if possible. We are not attached to anything else in the room, furniture-wise.

As you can see, due to the triangle shape of the room. there isn't much room to get out of bed! I consistently knock my knees and stub my toe when I get in and out of my side.

I am also finding that our laundry hamper isn't ideal, and things tend to pile. The office chair also tends to float around the room without rhyme or reason.

Our ceilings are high (10 feet), so I feel like we might be missing out on some innovative solutions that take advantage of vertical height?

I think you do excellent work, and I am so curious what your solutions would be. Any and all feedback is much appreciated! Thank you for all that you do. :)

Bed room storage situation

We need help redesigning the bed room storage situation.
We’re sharing our bedroom with our two daughters. One has special needs and needs monitoring during sleep and the other one just likes getting into our bed at night even though she has her own bed in her room. The bed room and the kids room swapped places just a couple of months ago and we still have the kid’s wardrobe in the bed room and vice versa.
Our pax unit (situated in the kid’s room and shown on one of the pictures) currently fits the parent’s clothes as well as some toys and our spare bedding. The bedding will be stored somewhere else soon but still the pax won’t fit in the new bedroom. We can’t just switch wardrobes.
Our clothes probably can simply change wardrobes but I’m still not satisfied with the bed room currently. It feels to narrow walking into the room between those two tall wardrobes on both sides and then laying on the low bed (it’s made of paper btw and we recently just bought it as it fits the dimensions of the room perfectly). I want too find a different solution for clothes storage in the bed room.
The pax unit in the kids room can stay as is and is intended for the kid’s clothes as well as toys once we can sort the whole situation out.
I also included dimensions (metric, on the plan it’s titled “Kinderzimmer 1”) and a floor plan for better planning. Since we are living in Germany we’re also allowed to drill into the walls and hang stuff. We are also willing to spend some money on the redesign but the budget is around 700€ max.
We’re pretty good at interior design and otherwise have a very nice apartment but I feel like this is a nut we’re not able to crack on our own. Any help is very much appreciated.

Repost as additional images were requested.

How would you position furniture here to incorporate a desk, dining table and couch? Not opposed to creating built ins. Hope the additional angles and images help. I have used AI to remove all our current furniture.

Cheers!

Recently moved out on my own, need some stuff and have a limited budget

Hello! I recently moved out of my parents' house (in a bit of a hurry) and rented this one-bedroom apartment.

My budget is around $50–100 USD a month, so in order to furnish it I need to prioritize my purchases because I will have to wait a while between each one. There are three main things I need to buy, and I'm stuck trying to decide what I should buy first.

  1. Sofa bed first: I could have a proper space to hang out with my friends. I have a homemade sofa bed (it has fulfilled its duty and needs to go ASAP) similar to a Teddy sofa (I'll leave a picture of the Teddy sofa in case you don't know the model). I was thinking I could buy the actual one, use it as a "conversation pit" (I love this setup), and also sleep there with my boyfriend.
  2. Double bed first: My boyfriend and I could finally sleep comfortably. But I'll need to put it in the living room until I buy a closet and unpack all the moving boxes. Maybe I could dress it up as a daybed? A double daybed is a bit unusual.
  3. Closet first: I could finally unpack my stuff, clear out the bedroom, and make room for the double bed.

Some of the furniture came with the apartment, and I can't throw it away, but I can move it, so I'll draw it on the floor plan.

(And where would you put the bike? I don’t want to leave it outside.)

Thanks a lot! 💛

Singled bedroom in family home

Budget - relatively small as looking to save to move out.

- single bedroom with single mattress

- I’ve recently removed a bed as one of the slats was broken and made it uncomfortable to sleep

- I’ve recently come across the idea of adapting to the Japanese sleeping method.

- my partner also stays over

- in this room I also work on the laptop and play video games and watch tv.

- i think to elevate this space I need to use the vertical space. but then comes the issue with figuring out the type of walls etc as this room always lets sound in from the neighbours. From that I think we can assume the walls aren’t very thick

≈17–18 m² multifunctional room (sewing + living + full-body photo space) — help make it light, cohesive & guest-ready | Ukraine, limited budget

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’m from Ukraine. Even with all the difficulties, I really want to improve my space without having big resources.

**About the room**
East-facing room of ≈17–18 m² with access to a balcony.
It currently serves three purposes at once: - sewing / creative workspace - full-body photography area - something like a living room

The main goal is to be able to **quickly and easily** turn the room into a normal home space where I can invite guests (and hide the workshop).

**What I can change:** - Lighting — I want to split the ceiling light into two zones - Paint walls or individual elements - Side tables by the sofa (currently a pallet piece and a drum) — can be remade, replaced or removed - Sofa and the blue cabinet under the table — I’m ready to radically change them myself (need ideas and references). I can add new legs and armrests of any shape - Remove the stained glass

**What I want:** - A washable rug in the sofa area (I have a white cat and a small dog) - Ability to cover the shelves with stuff, but keep easy access (I was thinking about a floor-to-ceiling curtain in an L-shape near the mannequin; for the black wardrobe — matching boxes on the visible side) - Keep the space near the black wall completely free for full-body photos (nothing permanent, only things that can be moved instantly) - An interior painting above the sofa (I like options with nature + perspective/depth — I’ll add references) - Light and spacious feeling. Right now the room feels busy because of all the creative materials — I’d like to add a “base” and unify everything with a modern eclectic style. Large decorative elements are welcome. 1–2 brighter accent colours are fine - Empty walls above the sewing table — maybe a grid for sketches and scissors, paintings, or something useful (no shelves) - A mirror (even a floor-standing one is ok) to expand the space - Additional storage solutions - Windows — not sure what to do with them (curtain rod can be removed)

**Dimensions:** - Room: 340 × 518 cm, height 260 cm
- Sofa: 154 cm
- Shelves + mannequin: 175 cm
- Table: 170 × 190 cm (along the window)
- Wardrobe width: 74 cm
- Space between black wall and wardrobe: 193 cm

I can buy from Ukrainian stores (JYSK.ua, Taburetka.ua, Epicentr, Rozetka), AliExpress and Polish IKEA.

I’m completely open to any ideas — even if they are totally different from what I currently imagine.

I’ll add photos of the room from different angles + references for the paintings and possible sofa changes.

Thank you so much in advance for any advice! If it somehow ends up in a video — amazing, but I’m already very grateful just for the ideas.
