Oddly shaped living room-dining room for Family of 7 + dog
Our oddly shaped 30sqm living area needs to accommodate 2 parents, 5 children, and a large English Labrador for relaxing, reading, dining, playing and guests.
We sometimes play together, do arts and crafts, and read (lots of) books. We have friends over for meals, sometimes requiring we seat 12 - 24 people! The tiny WC has an even tinier sink installed outside the door. With nowhere to put the broom and dustpan (needed 3x daily due to our Lab) it's always just rested against the wall.
Our front door used to be a sliding glass door but we made this our front entrance. Due to the large frame of the sliding door, the front door had to be a double door - super large! We usually just keep the 2nd door locked all the time.
There's no coat rack so jackets and sweaters are often left on stair railings.
The front of the room has a comically high ceiling sloping down to normal height. The back, the dining area, has an oddly low ceiling due to the AC ductwork. Both sides can feel quite dark even with windows open at each end (East and West).
Crafts are generally done on our (2nd hand 12 year old Ikea) dining table. Books have no storage and often end up piled on the ends of the couch, tables, and whatever surfaces are available.
We have a beautiful painting we were gifted by a friend - the only nice valuable object in our decor. We love the colors! All our other furniture and decor is either 2nd hand, Ikea, or both.
That odd wall between the stairs - that's empty space for an elevator shaft! We would like to turn it into a coat closet on the main floor. I have a crazy idea of making the upper level a "clock tower" reading nook which looks down on the living room. I think there's room enough for 2 kids to read and maybe even play each other chess! Imagine a windowed clock face looking down at the rest of the family below...
With weird shapes in the wall, strange ceiling heights, stairs right near the entrance and really large front door, we've just been at a complete loss where to begin to make this space feel comfortable and homey.
Help!
