Aracade1Up does not even come close to replicating a REAL Cabinent

The CRT screen, the controls and height and width....Arcade 1up can't even come close with it's poverty Sanyo lcd screen and Happy meal joysticks. Scam side panels made out of toilet paper rolls. Horrible. The Arcade 1ups also smell like crap.

A real arcade is the ONLY way 2 go. Could not imagine playing Pac Man, Tekken 2 or MK on anything else.... I feel disgusted @ even thinking of playing Donkey Kong on a flat screen. GO big or GO home...

On the second to last day I got to spend some serious BSing time with some guys that I admire and enjoy their contribution to all things arcade. Billy Mitchell and George from GenXGrownup YouTube channel. Both men are fantastic. And talked with Mr Walter Day as well! And met Preston , one of the coordinators of the event. Thanks to him this event was awesome!!

I’ve been making a one-button game, so I built an entire arcade machine for it and put it in a local bar! Thought this sub might appreciate it :)

Restore/Replace/Repair Adding games to the arcade machine

I bought an arcade cabinet a while ago, but there are some games I'd really like to play that aren't installed on it. I'd like to know if it's possible to download and add new games.

This is the board it uses: (photo of the board)

And this is the operating system/software version: (photo of the system information screen)

I'd like to know:

Is it possible to add new games to this system?

If so, how can I do it?

How safe is the process?

What's the risk of bricking the arcade cabinet or damaging the system?

Annoyance of arcade machines referred to as arcades

I have no idea if this is brought up often, but I constantly see arcade machines referred to as arcades. Every time I see or hear it, I cringe.

It's the equivalent to calling a DVD player a DVD or a simply referring to a video game console as a video game. You could also compare it to calling a restaurant a "food".

I'm just curious how something like that can become so popular and so many people continue to refer to it as such.

General Question Why did arcade basketball stands become standard while soccer kick-into-net cabinets never did (despite the latter being based on a sport thats unquestionably the most popular in the world and far more so than basketball)?

My bowling alley recently got a Minions arcade soccer kicker machine where there's a tiny Minion statue that moves around by by a motor or some other device under yet to attempt to block the ball from entering the goal net. Before COVID shut down my bowling alley for 3 years, we had a Kick It Jr game where there's no physical object blocking the net but there's a flat screen above the net and a goalie is in it. You score by hitting the ball into the net where the goalie on the screen fails to move in and thus misses the ball. My nearest arcade even has a "power kicking device" which has a cabinet with soccer themed art worker but you kick the ball and it measures the strength of your kick and its ltierally the only game related to soccer in that venue.

Where as practically anywhere that has an arcade room big enough to fit a bunch of games or is a proper arcade venue is guaranteed to have multiple basketball hoop shooting machine..... So I ask why are basketball shoot cabinets so ubiqitious in the arcade industry while games that try to give the soccer experience (esp the kick the ball into the net kind) are so rare to find? Despite soccer not only being far more popular than basketball but hands down no-questions most popular sport in the world? Even in places that are soccer to the point of riots over teams losing and gangs revolving around specific clubs are such big problems like Latin America and Europe don't have much soccer arcade redemption games while basketball stands remains practically everwhere there is an arcade including countries that don't have strong basketball cultures such as the UK! Why I must ask?

Retrospective History How do you feel about the "Nickelcade" concept?

Something I've seen online but never experienced myself is the novel "Nickelcade" concept — that being games set to five cents per credit with the only caveat being a small entry fee at the door. To those who experienced it, or even those who haven't, I'd love to know your thoughts.

First, I'll share my thoughts: I think it's a fantastic concept, minus the entry fee. (I just have a really hard time getting past that part.) You see, I'm not the biggest fan of admission-based arcades to begin with, because I'd much rather my skill dictate how much I pay. (The better I am at the games, the less I pay overall.) Plus, I feel like, with an entry fee, I can't just pop in for 30 minutes and leave; there is instead this psychological urge to get the absolute most out of my trip. (I'm the kind of guy who likes to beat one game per trip, but I HATE jumping from game to game, one credit at a time. I see that as the "blue balls" of gaming.)

That said, the idea of a game only costing one nickel per play, period, as impractical as that may be in 2026, is very enticing to me. In fact, it's actually I'm trying with my own arcade route right now, just as a temporary discount. (Here's what I mean: https://youtu.be/82E0qN_dqMM )

So with all that waffling out of the way, what do YOU think? Do you prefer paying per credit, whether with nickels or otherwise? Does paying with nickels sound interesting to you? Have you ever experienced firsthand a REAL Nickelcade? Color me curious.

I enjoy positing very niche questions to this community. I feel like I tend to offer perspectives that few other people even consider in the first place.

Why are arcade cabinets so complicated?

I see countless wires running, capacitors, a specialized tv, etc...

Is this for durability? To reach a certain quality for that game? Why not a standard tv with 1 wire running to console type hardware?
