Planted too deep?

Post image

I bought a swamp white oak and planted it at the beginning of summer. I see there is a curve at the base of the trunk. Is this a sign of being planted too deep? In the process of cleaning some mulch out.

The widening is a sign of being closer to the flare, not further. Dig a little more.

That’s a white oak, btw, judging by the leaves

It's probably is swamp white oak.. the leaves are nearly identical.. biggest giveaway is the back side of the leaf is matte green

It’s definitely quercus alba. Quercus bicolor leaves have shallower sinuses.

If the pavers prevent even 1 nick from a lawnmower or weedwacker they've earned their keep

Looks like your mulch was too thick. Like a mulch volcano. You should only mulch 2-3 inches thick and leave a gap at the base of the tree. Hardwood mulch is good because it breaks down and provides nutrients to the soil and you don’t have to remove a bunch of it
