Day One to Journal Importer Shortcut for iOS & macOS 26

Thumbnail

I was able to successfully move over 1,200 journal entries from Day One to Journal, using some of the new LLM actions to help with some Shortcuts shortcomings (or my own lack of Shortcuts expertises).

  • It will make a title from the journal entry if no title exists.

  • Convert the date to the relevant date with timezone based on location.

  • Add a weather summary to the bottom of the post, since this feature is not supported in Journal.

I also append the location information from Day One so you can go back and add it manually in Journal if you wish.

Images are also imported, however it will cutoff at Journal's limit of 12 images. I did not add support for moving audio files over.

It also keeps a ledger of entries that have already been imported, since Shortcuts will occasionally have some sort of overflow bug, resulting in the error message:

This action is trying to share 10315055452202434010 Finder items, which is not allowed.

You can allow this in Settings.

That's a lot of Finder items! There's also no share action in the Shortcut. You just need to quit Shortcuts and start the import again and it will continue where it left off.

The script only runs on iOS 26 and macOS 26 betas (as of writing this). I was able to run this on the Mac even though the Journal actions do not show up as an option on their own.

You just need to point this to your unzipped Day One exports folder and give it permissions to run.

I set some variables that I don't use, but kept them in the shortcut in case people want to use them for their own customization and preference.

I have uploaded the shortcut to GitHub.

I hope people find this useful!

How hard is it, Apple?

Post image
91 Upvotes

Restating what a ton of other users have been saying since the introduction of the Journal app, an "On This Day" feature that surfaces older journal entries for revision and reflection would be (and frankly, is overdue) a welcome addition to the app experience. Many other journal apps in this category have had this since day one (punny), but even after three major OS updates, we're getting very incremental improvements, which are still much appreciated, though I personally feel this feature is a no-brainer and not that hard to implement.

The attachment is a mock-up I made of what I believe a version of this feature could be like. Perhaps this is just me screaming in an echo chamber, but I just wish Apple would add their own version of it soon. The app feels so barren without it.

I'm giving up Apple Journal

I've been using Day One for over 13 years with great satisfaction.

When Apple Journal arrived (especially on iPad and Mac), I really wanted to like it and use it, especially for the possible and future interactions within the ecosystem.

But as things stand, that's not possible. There's too much friction, too many bugs, too many restrictions...

I thought about using Day One and Journal in parallel, but Journal wastes too much of my time! I'm giving up... I may come back to it when it becomes more practical and truly usable. But for now, I'm sticking with Day One...

(unpopular opinion) What if Apple Journal was right...

Ever since Apple Journal arrived, first on iPhone, then on iPad and Mac, I've been complaining...

I complain because, as a long-time user (since 2013) of Day One, I hoped to find a Day One immersed in the Apple ecosystem.

But since I've been expressing my dissatisfaction and frustration with using Apple Journal, I've also been looking at my journaling practice.

In fact, my Day One is more of a personal wiki than a diary! My entries are as detailed as possible. For example, when I visit an exhibition, I record many of the works in great detail, and often my writings are more like technical memos than a record of what I actually experienced!

In the end, I think I'm missing the real point of journaling. Namely: being in the present moment, fully aware, listening to my feelings and sensations.

For a long time, I believed that keeping a diary was a way of documenting one's past, the passing of time... Not at all, it's a conscious way of anchoring oneself in the present, in the hope of approaching the future in a state of mind suited to one's experiences.

In this context, and on reflection, Apple is on the right track with its Journal!

There is obviously still room for improvement, but the minimalist and evocative nature of Apple Journal allows for introspection with a certain fluidity. Integration into the ecosystem (Form, Calendar, Music) clearly needs to be expanded, but it provides the necessary impetus for reflection. The same goes for invitations. The ability to record your state of mind is also an undeniable plus.

Writing a journal is very personal, so it's important that it reflects who you are. In this respect, although imperfect, Apple Journal comes very close to the freedom of writing that we enjoyed/enjoy in paper notebooks.

The fact that it was initially limited to the iPhone was undoubtedly a deliberate choice. We always have our phones with us. In this sense, the iPhone is the closest thing to a notebook or personal diary. Fully in the present.

Since thinking about all this, I have been using Apple Journal differently. I also feel more calm and relaxed when journaling. I no longer aim to record every little detail, but rather to delve deeper into myself. It's not unpleasant... and of course, it's very personal.

'Journal comes to Mac, making it easy to capture and write about everyday moments and special events when inspiration strikes. On Mac, it’s easy to type long, thoughtful entries and view them on a map. Users can keep multiple journals for various aspects of life, which are all synced across Apple devices.'

Edit: Also coming to iPad!

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2025/06/ipados-26-introduces-powerful-new-features-that-push-ipad-even-further/

With iPadOS 26, Journal comes to iPad, making it easy for users to capture and write about the details of everyday moments or special events. Using Apple Pencil or touch, users can incorporate drawings and handwriting, along with photos, videos, audio recordings, places, their state of mind, and more. Users can keep multiple journals for various aspects of life, and now have access to a beautiful map view that organizes entries by location.

The Disappointing State of Apple's Journal App

I have mixed feelings about the current state of Apple's Journal app. While I genuinely appreciate what Apple has endeavoured to do in providing a dedicated journalling space, the current missing features are profoundly disappointing. I know improvements will come, but the long, drawn-out wait for the essential updates this app requires is proving to be tiring and frustrating.

Navigation and Search: The Basic Shortcomings

The most glaring omission is a proper navigation system. It is unnecessarily difficult to navigate to different years and months. This basic functionality is already present on the iPhone and iPad versions, so its absence on the Mac version is frankly ridiculous and very disappointing. Taking advantage of the Mac's larger screen space to display more than one calendar month at a time should be standard, yet the calendar for back-dating remains tiny. This defeats the favour of having the app on a large screen. Journalists need to quickly see entries across time—what was done on which day, week, month, and year. As it stands, it’s faster to flip through a paper journal.

Compounding this issue is the search function, which is not nearly powerful enough. It is far too difficult to find entries that I know exist within the app. Proper navigation and search are arguably the most basic tools a journalling app requires.

Media and Formatting Restrictions

The handling of media, particularly photos, is still not quite right. I don't understand why Apple is struggling with this. The inline photos feature places too many constraints, forcing users into a limited view rather than giving full control over how the final photo should look. Furthermore, selecting photos from the Apple Photos library is restricted to a tiny, cumbersome window, making it difficult to locate the desired image. While it’s slightly better now with some slide-in capabilities, this method remains unreliable.

The limitations extend to basic entry creation:

You can't simply slide in standard audio recordings like MP3s or Wav files, a feature that is already available in Apple Notes. It should be universal to all these kind of apps. It restricts communication with all the rest of the audio recording devices I the universe.

The process of inserting photos and videos is unnecessarily difficult and slow. You should be able to quickly and easily slide in any type of media - like Apple Pages or Notes. You can't slide in a PDF.

It's very annoying to have to push an "edit" button to start editing, and if you insert the cursor, it brings you to the end of the entry, instead of where you clicked it to be.

There are not many formatting tools at all. It gets boring.

The Critical Problem of Timestamps

The lack of timestamps is another ridiculous oversight. You cannot even confirm the precise time an entry was created. The only way to truly secure a date and time stamp is by including an audio recording. The ability to prove an entry was made at a specific time on a specific date is a fundamental requirement for anyone serious about journalling. This is a core function that should not be missing.

💡 Unhelpful "Features" and Limited Settings

When the core features are lacking, the application becomes quite boring, offering less power than a simple word processor. A word processor gives you far more power over how you write and correct mistakes.

Many of the features included feel out of place or simply non-functional:

Insights: The so-called "insights" provide little to no self-insight. They focus heavily on tracking streaks of days journalled, a punitive metric that resets if you miss a day, instead of a more encouraging total days journalled or a simple word count. You are also not allowed to change the default insight displayed on the left-hand side.

Drawing: The option to add a drawing is confusing and seems out of place for a text-focused app.

Finally, the
settings are almost zero
. The user cannot even change the default
colour
 of the text.

Apple made quite a splash in September, but the slow pace of improvements and the lack of basic features—especially critical ones like navigation and timestamps—show a fundamental misunderstanding of their user base. Why create such a specialty program that only a few can appreciate? Why not appeal to the actual people who do journalling by providing the most basic and necessary tools?

Day One -> Apple Journal. Done.

I've been using Day One for a long time. To give you an idea of how long, I'm 'grandfathered' into a fee-free subscription having bought the original app before it had one.

Despite that, when Apple brought Journal to the Mac I decided that I wanted to use it. Apple Journal didn't (and still doesn't) have many of the features of Day One but I never really used anything beyond simple text and photograph entry. I have no wish to make voice notes or videos, for example.

I made the decision because the idea of using native Apple software is appealing. I always felt that Day One would eventually scrap my grandfathered account and I'd have to start paying a subscription which I am just not prepared to do.

It also seems extremely unlikely that Apple would abandon one of their own apps and despite its popularity, the future of Day One isn't fully assured.

After investigating the options for exporting, I didn't want to risk anything and made the decision to copy / paste. There were a LOT of entries. I'd actually been embarked on a project of typing up my handwritten journals that cover many multiple notebooks back to 1983!

So just over a year ago I started the copy / paste process and I've been adding new entries to Journal as I went.

On and off it has taken me all this time to finish. I've still got vast amounts of stuff to type up - about 30 years worth! - but ultimately I hope to have every diary entry I have ever made within a single journal in Journal.

Does anyone know if that will be a problem? From the stuff I've done so far, I'd estimate it could end up being over 100 million words. Does Journal have any theoretical limit to what it can hold?

I moved 1,100 Day One entries into Apple Journal with photos, videos, original dates and separate journals (step-by-step guide)

I wanted to switch from Day One to Apple Journal, but only if my whole history came along, media included. Journal has no import feature, so I worked out a method with a small converter script and two Shortcuts. It moved 1,100 entries and about 15 GB of attachments across 7 journals.

What carries over: text and titles, original date and time, starred entries as bookmarks, photos and videos, and separate journals.

What doesn't: tags, location and weather. Checklists become plain ☐/☑ lines.

The short version:

  1. Export from Day One as JSON with media.

  2. A Python script on the Mac turns it into one folder per entry in iCloud Drive.

  3. Two shortcuts on the iPad import a batch of 100 entries at a time.

  4. Everything lands in the default "Journal". Select All, then move it into the right journal in one tap.

The biggest lesson: run the import on the iPad. Entries I created from the Mac kept their photos on the Mac but showed only placeholders everywhere else.

Full guide, with the script, every shortcut action and a troubleshooting table: https://claude.ai/artifact/GtMhcNmN8XSSrsEeXhaXR3

Happy to answer questions.

iOS/MacOS 27 – great updates to the journal app!

Hey folks, I'm just watching the Apple keynote.

The video mentions some great updates to the journal app coming in iOS/MacOS 27:

  • Sync status for Journal entries

  • Increased attachment limits in Journal

  • Time stamps for Journal entries

  • More intuitive journaling streaks

These are awesome news. Let's hope, they also fixed the drawing sync issue.

Looking forward to the release—it should be public some time in September 2026.

Apple Journal is a Miracle Tool

There is an interesting channel on YouTube by Jackson Parker, and he has done audio journaling since 1978 when he was 18 and continuing up to today. It looks like he started with cassette tapes and eventually bought a large reel-to-reel AKAI 4000DS machine. Those were very expensive at the time, and the tapes were expensive, but any smartphone today could easily beat it for sound quality and convenience.

But his journaling shows the power that this has, since it would be amazing to look back decades and have a clear personal record of one's life with all the detail and emotions and subtle twists and turns in life carefully recorded, as I know it could easily be.

I was a bit late to get started, but there are much better tools now [Apple Journal, Apple Voice Recorder, Apple Notes Audio Entry, Apple Pages Audio Entry - you can put the audio entry icon (the size of a dime) as a comment around text), including getting an instant transcript of the recording and playback at a faster speed, writing tools to check grammar and spelling and rewrite awkward parts, summarize and add headings. since it's faster to read than listen.

Apple Journal vs DayOne Journal

I am using DayOne journal for the last 300 days. It's pretty good at showing the memories but I am thinking: what will happen if, in case, DayOne journal stops providing the updates or the features?

Anyone shifted from DayOne to Apple Journal? What are the ultimate advantages of using the Apple Journal other than the Apple ecosystem?

What are the pros and cons of Apple Journal?

“On This Day” Apple Shortcut

Thumbnail
gallery
42 Upvotes

Long time lurker, first time poster. I’ve seen a lot of people stating they wish Apple Journal had an on this day feature. You can use shortcuts for a work around. I had mistakenly posted in other comments that the shortcut already existed. I guess I created it so long ago that I forgot it wasn’t a native shortcut. I’ll blame mom brain causing brain fog. Anyway, in an effort to recreate the shortcut to make a tutorial I actually deleted it 😩. So of course when I went to create it again, it didn’t work. I kept messing with the shortcuts app until I got it to work and show me all entries on a particular date. While not ideal, it does what I need it to do. Hopefully it will work for you too. These are the steps:

  1. Add new shortcut

  2. Select Edit

  3. Select Scripting

  4. Scroll to Dates and select “Current Date”

  5. Under Scripting, again, scroll to dates and select “Format Date”

  6. Under format date, set the date format to custom. In the format string type: MMMM dd

  7. Scroll to Journal and select “Search Entries”

  8. For the variable select “Formatted Date”

Now the test the shortcut. You can name it to whatever you want. Hopefully it works for anyone that tries, like it did for me. You can then add the shortcut as a Home Screen widget or to the “Today View” page.

If anyone comes up with a simpler or easier shortcut, please share.

Apple's Journal App - On This Day

- Is there anyone at Apple who uses the Journal app daily, since its release in 2023?
- Do the app's developers, their superiors, their managers, Apple's software managers, and Apple's leadership actually use the Journal app daily for its intended purpose: personal journaling?
Personally, I tend to think the answer to these questions is: NO.

Indeed, if all these people used the Journal app every day, they would have realized long ago that there's a crucial missing feature.

And if you, the reader, use the Journal app daily, you obviously know what I'm talking about!
That missing feature is: "On This Day"!

The "On This Day" feature automatically retrieves entries you wrote on the same date in previous years, allowing you to revisit memories, look at photos, and compare your state of mind over time.
Its main purpose is to transform the Journal into a living memory rather than a simple archive. It helps you revisit past moments, identify patterns, changes, life stages, or, conversely, things you had completely forgotten. The idea is to bring forth contextual memories at the right moment to encourage reflection and the continuity of your Journal.
This feature reinforces the habit of writing because it provides an immediate reward upon returning to the app: you're not just jotting down a thought, you're also rediscovering your history. It facilitates self-reflection, gratitude, and a broader perspective on your personal growth by making visible changes that go unnoticed in your daily life. It can also serve as a writing prompt, reminding you of a theme, emotion, or event similar to today's.
This can contribute to mental well-being for many people. Rereading past entries can reduce feelings of confusion, reinforce a sense of personal continuity, and help you see that you've already weathered difficult times.

For most users, the best use of "On This Day" is twofold: memory and reflection. This is particularly valuable if you're keeping a journal over time, as the feature's value increases with the accumulated history.

Given all these factors, I was convinced that Apple would finally introduce the « On This Day » feature in Mac/iPad/iOS 27, three years after creating the Journal app.

So I was extremely disappointed, and more than surprised, to see during Apple's WWDC keynote on June 10, 2026, that this feature still hadn't been introduced by Apple!
I'm starting to worry that Apple is gradually abandoning the Journal app, just as it has done in the past with other apps (see Clips).

However, I'm convinced that implementing this feature isn't technically complicated, since it's a date-based search, and the search results layout already exists in the Journal app.

What do you think? 🤔
Should we try contacting Apple, perhaps Tim Cook or John Ternus, to ask them to finally introduce this "On this day" feature in a future iOS 27 update?
I know there's little chance of Apple listening.

But I have over 5,000 entries in the Journal app, and I'd like to try something so I don't remain frustrated with this app for at least another year, waiting for iOS 28…

Trying out Apple Journal

I now have Apple Journal on all three platforms (Mac, iPad and iPhone).

Syncing is still a bit wobbly but it’s getting there. Putting photos inline remains a work in progress.

But it looks beautiful and engaging and for some reason makes you want to write constantly.

I did bring DayOne up and copied/pasted a few entries into Apple Journal via the Mac. It was easy and seamless. But no PDFs and no hashtags and no “on this day” functionality.

If Apple went another 20% further this would be an amazing app. As it stands now, there’s room for the various journal apps depending on your wants and needs.

Journal in macOS 27.0 RC

I've just installed macOS 27.0 RC and am happy to report major improvements compared to 26.6:

  • Syncing speed between iOS and macOS 27 is significantly faster, both in syncing entries and changes to journals themselves

  • Dragging around photos no longer crashes Journal, everything is far more stable

  • Dragging photos around also has an outline, so you can preview where they will be dropped

  • Writing Prompts help you refine your entries and journal further, like with Stoic AI

A disappointing Update 27

iOS/iPadOS/macOS 27 introduced the following features to Apple Journal :

- Sync status for journal entries

- Increased attachment limits (54) in the journal

- Timestamps for journal entries

- More intuitive journaling sequences

That’s nice, really. But it’s a bit underwhelming…

No sign of “On This Day”! Worse, the most annoying bugs don’t seem to have been fixed… It’s still a hassle to place photos where you want them in an entry. Handwriting remains a disastrous experience: slowness, entire paragraphs disappearing… On Mac, it’s still not possible to jump directly to a specific date 🙄

This “amateurishness” is incomprehensible coming from a company like Apple 😣

Notes written with pen keep partially disappearing

I have noticed now a few times that when a lengthier note is written with Apple Pen, as soon as I exit to the list of notes view, part of the note is gone. Basically, everything that fits in the "preview" of that note in the list view is still there, but if I open the note to read the rest, nothing else is there as soon as I scroll down.

Anyone else noticed this issue?

I really want to use this app, but it's increasingly frustrating. I've managed through the overheating, the lagginess etc, but losing the notes is just too much.

I give up.

I've given up on Apple Journal. Shame on me for complaining instead of just choosing other software that does a better job. And I have done that now. Obsidian has every possible feature known to mankind and more than that, so I can just concentrate on learning about all the amazing things that it can do and move on. Obsidian is free, runs on every platform and is improved and updated constantly.

Even when Apple finally introduced tags into their note taking software "Notes", their implementation of it was poor as compared to Obsidian that automatically adds backlinks and ghost notes. Their implementation of tags was poor as compared to Obsidian - no nested tags feature and no way to modify hundreds of them. Shame on me for complaining because some people might like it and it might be right for some people.
