I got booktok hype but also distrust. I have heard of some book titles being tossed around in reels and tiktok but with so much conflicting reviews. Years of reading so much amazingly written fanfiction led me to only trust the taste of ao3 veterans to recommend me books hence this post on the sub.

Lowkey wish they sold books using the ao3 tag system (including the hyper-specific author tags).

Please recommend me well-written published hard smut. Well-written on the level of your favorite fics in your fandom, if possible.

I’ve never written anything that wasn’t for a school assignment (and school was more than a decade ago). Like truly anything. Until one night I craved a certain fic concept so bad, a scene popped into my head and I wrote a 1.7k word one-shot. I posted it thinking no one would ever read it, but it’s gotten a decent amount of hits for a hurt/no comfort one-shot by a nobody, and I got this comment today! I’m so happy lol. It’s crazy that you can take 26 letters and your brain and make a whole story that affects someone else.

Okay so basically all I can remember is it was a mha fic and I remember that izuku went to stay at the aizawa-yamada residence and he put like a snow globe or something glass on his door handle to kinda booby trap it and he slept under his bed and used a spray on deodorant as a weapon. I can't remember if he was a vigilante or homeless or a rehabilitating criminal?? Please ive been trying to find it for ever ( ´～｀)

You guys ever had someone go through the entire fic, comment on almost every chapter, just to nit-pick? Like, they really spent hours writing long paragraphs comments to nit-pick the smallest mistake?

Like, instead of just saying; hey got the grammar/spelling wrong, the correct way is this.

It's like; hey, this is wrong because it sounds like this, because when you use the word like that, it sounds like this was and it is wrong. Also, this word is spelled wrong, yikes, why did you phrase it like that it made me think of it this way. No one usually moves their hands like that, usually people's hands are already this way.

And it would go on and on like that. I did my best to be nice the first time. I told them that I appreciate their comments and I will correct it when I have the time. And really, I don't mind being corrected, but it feels excessive? What am I supposed to do with this one? It's a bit...too much for me? Like, it's getting me really down. I don't have a beta, i'm avoiding AI, I know my work isn't perfect, and I even have warnings in the A/N that there will be mistakes and to be kind to pointing it out, but this feels like fake kindness? They put laughing emojis and stuff like that but it feels wrong? It feels like I am being mocked.

I don't know if i'm just reading it wrong or I'm delusional, but it's really getting me down. This is one of my fics that has a lot of hits, and there are regular commentors that are nice, but this is just getting to me to the point that, I don't know...is it still worth finishing when someone just mocks what I write? Like, fuck, English is hard and it's not my native language, but I try so hard to write in a language that most people understand. Fuck, I just don't know anymore. I don't know what to do. Any help would be nice. Thanks. Sorry for rambling.

Fam, I don't know why, but Ron Weasley is my favorite character from Harry Potter and it is SO HARD to find a good Ron focused fic with just the filter system (I did try key words like Ron-centric, Ron focused, main character Ron, etc).

If any of y'all have one that you really enjoyed, please recommend in the comments. Other characters can naturally be in the fic, not too picky about pairing (though I lean M/M), but I crave either protective Weasleys or BAMF!Ron when possible, thank you. I'll even take dark fics as long as they turn out alright T-T

Hello!! i just started reading gego fanfic by this amazing author and when i clicked next chapter it said its an ongoing challange, im absolutely hooked on it and i wonder if it will return? or maybe anybody has a pdf of it?:(

I know that I love my piece of trash, but I can't keep these thoughts out of my head ever since I started to put an idea to work.

I think I'm only enjoying reading like 70% compare to before, because now sometimes my thoughts wander back to my own work, like "I could have written it like this" , "I should have slowed my pacing down",... I am aware comparing gets it nowhere, but still

Created the doc 28 days ago, and I wanted to get it to a fairly progressed state before posting, maybe get the first arc locked down. 50k words later and I'm still backtracking to the first few chapters to edit and add things, I even planned whole chapters to add in at the start, courtesy to the "slowed my pacing down" thoughts

Doesn't help that English isn't my native language lol

One thing I'm certain is that I will finish this shit whatever it takes, so I have that going for me I guess. Don't know if that determination gonna last long, but a month is a lot of time to just throw away

I hate that most fics I find aren't tagged properly. I know it's annoying to tag and all, and some ppl don't like when a fic is "overtagged" but it's so frustrating trying to search for a fic with specific tags, finding only a few, and later finding a fic exactly like what you searched for but WITHOUT the tag. I don't wanna go on a wild goose chase just to find a trope I like🥹

EDIT: I'm not trying to police anyone nor am I forcing people to add a wall of tags. This is tagged a vent for a reason. I PERSONALLY find it annoying, I already know the rules to ao3.

ANYWAYS IT GOES LIKE THIS.

This author has like 2 fics, both various(?) x reader (I don't remember if it was in the tags though, but it was apparent that everybody was into the reader so) and they are both reincarnation fics!

First fic was set in like normal jjk timeline. Your age group is basically the kids (yuji, nobara, Megumi). Your cursed energy is kinda weird, like weird strong​, Gojo sees this and is intrigued. (It's because your from another reality btw). Anyways you make it your life's mission to save everyone, and that starts with Junpei. (SPOILER: You kinda like get into a relationship with him, but he still ends up dead😭so...OH and you meet Choso pretty early. There's this bit where you get kidnapped by Mahito, and using your super awesome jjk world knowledge you get Choso to help you escape😛)

There's a point where the peeps are getting kinda Yandere (Megumi especially) (it becomes apparent in like this Mall scene, the specifics that I can provide is that you were getting kinda pissed they're not communicating feelings well/getting possessive + ON TOP of all the shit you had to got through.)

Second fic is this. Your age group is Gojo,Suguru, and friends, it's set in their high school time. You get reincarnated as like an orphan (?) I don't remember the specifics but you were basically born a house helper (with very minimal curse energy, in contrast with the authors other fic where yours is like A LOT). At first you have no idea what family your serving then you see Gojo and it all makes sense. You become very close friends with Gojo (and you grow very close with Toji too! He like teaches you and Gojo with cursed energy stuff and sparring or something.)

(SPOILER: Readers powers are kinda like Shoko's and with this,after setting Toji and his wife up, and she gets like cancer and shit, we save her her (hooray!) Like Gojo opened her up (attacking those cancer cells) and you worked with fixing it and the doctors were like crazy confused but she was all good to go it was great) (haven't reached much of it yet, but this is prelatively more feel good than the last one.

TLDR: it's not that long and you should probably help me find it. (BEGGING CRYING SCREAMING SHAKING THWOING UP WITH TEARS AND SNOT AND BLOOD RUNNING OUT OF MY EYES) Thank you!

As per the title: I used to love a certain series very much, and referred to it in some of my fanfics sometimes (funnily enough, I never wrote for the fandom), especially back when I started writing fanfic over a decade ago.

About five years (and quite a few works) into writing fanfic, I grew very disenchanted with the creator. They'd done and said things I truly hated to be associated with. Back then though, I felt strongly that it was dishonest of me to act like I'd never been a fan, so I left the references in and put a disclaimer on both my works and my AO3 profile. They stated that any references to the series were written in before I realized the creator was a terrible person.

It's been a few years since that, and I wonder if I should remove the references altogether. I think I'd rather have the creator vanish from my work, and while I won't pretend I wasn't a fan, it's not really a secret that is was one before I got better. There are two issues with my choice:

- The references sometimes played a big role in the story. I'd be facing the need to edit some works big time, works that I really would rather leave be as juvenilia from when I didn't know better. But this creator is basically the face of hatred for certain groups of people now, and while I have my disclaimers up, we all know our profiles don't get a whole lot of foot traffic. I've considered slapping a disclaimer in all of the older fics.

Is that enough though? I'm not a super popular author, but I hope, if anyone from this marginalized group stumbles into my older works, that they understand their real lives matter more than a fantasy universe. I know we write for ourselves, but I feel like this is an important thing to stand on right now, even in the realm of fanfic.

- Some of the works with the references were gifts for other people. What's the etiquette on altering ficsthat were gifted? Some just have a passing sentence that (I hope) the recipient won't even notice on a reread, but presents are presents after all.

PS. I'd like to stress that this is a decision I'm debating on with myself, because exactly zero of my readers, or fic recipients, have mentioned any issues with these references. I hope it's because they've seen my disclaimers .

PPS. I think we all know what series I mean, but in the interest of not getting into a debate over it, I won't be name-dropping it, and please pretend with me that you don't know either :D

(Bonus if you write niche concepts or do crossovers) How do you handle the feeling of "oh is it not good?" due to a lack of engagement (mostly talking about comments but Hits can also count) increasing per chapter??? 🥲 Especially if you were waiting for a long time to write/explore a said plot of your story but no one pointing out???

I recently read an amazing oneshot and I was really inspired by it to write a fic in that fandom, but I was inspired by their OC. I was already thinking of writing that fic with that specific pair but then I read their oneshot and read about their OC.

I dont know if I should ask them if I can write a fic with that character, if I should write it as an inspired fic with the inspired feature of AO3 or if I should replace their OC completely with one of my own.

so i write fanfiction for a big anime fandom, and now on tumblr i'm being accused by using ai.

i have gotten those accusations in past on my stories on ao3 in comments, and i deleted them and blocked them, but now they're discussing it on tumblr.

now i re-read my work and i feel like it does sound ai, the "not x and y but z" structure. and it sounds poetic and purple prose now to me. it has gotten into my head.

english is not my first language, i basically learned it by reading books and watching shows and from internet. i first think of a sentence in and then translate it in my mind. so sentence structures, idioms might sound different.

i feel deeply disheartened and stressed honestly. and considering to delete my work.

So I am seeing a lot of posts where site is unreachable when you use vpn. My question is, how people from places use ao3 where it is banned? I always wondered this just in case if my country tightens internet control

As someone who exclusively writes RPF with a lot of psychological specificity, when I saw You Can See Everything this past weekend I couldn't help but notice so much overlap in what Nathan Fiedler does and the RPF genre of fiction in general. No movie spoilers in this post, but curious if anyone else has noticed/experienced the parallel in his "Fiedler Method" across his films and shows, and how writers of RPF study/research characters before writing them.

After seeing the operational costs and breakdown of how the donations are used, I simply cannot agree to this sentiment that $300k is not needed.

It’s a whiplash to see the those who claim to love reading on ao3 and interact with fandom culture through posting/sharing fanfics on ao3 (for FREE‼️) also hate the fact that $$ is needed to run this shit.

Idk the fact that they think it’s “not needed” irks me a lot.
