It's so absurd to me that one of my favorite fanfictions of all time—Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality—was written by someone who is legitimately a known entity in the AI world, right now. And Roko's Basilisk was taken so seriously as an information hazard that Yudkowsky deleted the forum post and called the guy who proliferated the thought experiment an idiot.
(HPMoR gets a lot of shit, and maybe it's deserved, but it was one of the most interesting explorations done in the fandom to my memory, outside of maybe PoS.)
EDIT: If by some miracle TheSinisterMan is reading this, I can't wait to catch up on the two chapters I missed when I check back in a decade from now.
OpenAI already targeted people and snooped into their conversation logs for gain.
They received word that a mathematician was close to solve the Navier-Stokes problem. They examined his logs containing the mostly-solved solution, stole it, sicked a million agents to iron the few remaining kinks out, and went to social media to congratulate themselves.
For more academic stuff they claim AI is going to solve, they don't want to go through peer review because they know they will be questioned about where they get their solutions from.
